Why Regular Cleaning is Crucial

Makeup brushes come into contact with your skin, makeup products, and environmental pollutants every time you use them. Over time, they accumulate oils, dirt, bacteria, and leftover makeup. Yuck!

If not cleaned regularly, these impurities can transfer to your skin, leading to clogged pores and breakouts! And dirty brushes can affect the quality of your makeup application, causing uneven blending and patchy coverage. You’ve invested in high quality brushes, it’s worth it to invest a bit of time into maintenance.

Steps for Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes:-

1. Gather a Few Things

  • Use a dedicated makeup brush cleaner like Jenny Patinkin’s Luxury Vegan Makeup Brush Soap. Or you can use a gentle shampoo.
  • Lukewarm water
  • A small bowl
  • A clean towel

2. Wet the Bristles Under Lukewarm Water

Hold your brush under lukewarm running water, focusing only on the bristles. Avoid getting water on the handle as it can loosen the glue holding the bristles.

3. Apply Brush Cleanser

Add a small amount of brush cleaner to the bristles. You may want to consider using a cleansing pad with textured surfaces designed specifically for brush cleaning.

4. Lather and Rinse

Gently swirl the brush in your palm or on a cleansing pad to create a lather. Rinse the bristles under lukewarm water until the water runs clear. Repeat if necessary.

5. Dry the Brushes

Gently squeeze out excess water and wipe on a clean towel. Reshape the bristles and lay the brush flat on a towel to dry. Avoid drying brushes upright to prevent water from seeping into the handle.

Frequency of Cleaning:-

1. Foundation and Concealer Brushes

Clean these brushes once a week. These brushes come into direct contact with creamy products that can harbor bacteria, dirt and other gross particles.

2. Eyeshadow Brushes

Clean these brushes bi-weekly or after each use if you use vibrant colors frequently. Wash more frequently if you have any eye irritation.

3. Powder Brushes

Clean these brushes weekly. They typically have less product buildup compared to liquid or cream products but still need to be cleaned regularly.

Proper Storage:-

1. Upright Storage

Store your brushes upright in a holder or container to maintain their shape and prevent the bristles from getting bent.

2. Separate Storage for Clean and Dirty Brushes

Have separate storage areas for clean and used brushes to avoid contamination.

3. Travel Storage

Use a brush roll or protective case to keep your brushes safe and clean while traveling.

Replacing Old Brushes:-

Brushes won’t last forever - but luxury makeup brushes definitely have greater longevity. You’ll pay more, but you’ll get more life and better performance.

You’ll want to consider replacing your brushes when:

●   The bristles start to shed. Or fray. You’ll see it!

●   The brush loses its shape and doesn’t perform as well as it originally did.

●   Even after cleaning, the brush doesn’t feel or apply product the same way it used to.

By following Jennys guidance and sticking to a cleaning regimen. you can prolong the life of your makeup brushes ensuring application and maintaining healthy skin.
