How to Build a Spaced Repetition Study Schedule for Any Exam

The technique itself is trivial: revisit each topic at expanding intervals instead of cramming it once. The obstacle is that doing this across thirty or forty topics means tracking a couple of hundred individual review dates, and no one does that by hand for long. This is a guide to building the schedule regardless of what you are studying.

Building the schedule in five steps
- 1. List your topics at the right grain. A topic should be one to three hours of first-pass work. 'Organic chemistry' is not a topic; 'nucleophilic substitution mechanisms' is. Too coarse and the reviews are unmanageably long; too fine and you drown in bookkeeping. Most exams land somewhere between 25 and 60 topics.
- 2. Count your real available days. Not calendar days to the exam — days you will genuinely study. Subtract the trip, the two weeks of term deadlines, and one rest day a week. Then subtract another 10% for life. The remaining number is your actual runway, and it is usually about two thirds of what you first assumed.
- 3. Place first passes in the front 60% of the runway. Every topic needs enough remaining days for its review chain. A topic introduced with ten days left cannot get a day-14 or day-30 review, so it will be the shakiest thing you walk in with. Anything genuinely hard goes in the first third.
- 4. Schedule the review chain at 1, 3, 7, 14 and 30 days. Each review is roughly a fifth of the first-pass duration, and must be retrieval — produce the material from memory before you check it. When a review date falls past the exam, drop it; when several collide on one day, spread them one day either side rather than skipping.
- 5. Cap each day and let the plan absorb the overflow. Set a daily maximum in hours. When a day exceeds it, push the lowest-priority review forward rather than working late — a schedule you can actually follow beats an optimal one you abandon in week two.
Step five is where hand-built plans fall apart. Pushing one review forward changes the spacing of everything downstream from it, and re-deriving the cascade by hand after every missed day is the reason most study calendars are abandoned before the halfway point.
The spacing intervals that do the work
The single highest-leverage thing in any study schedule is when you revisit a topic, not how long you sat with it the first time. The interval pattern that survives contact with a real calendar is:
- Day 0 — first pass. Read, work problems, take notes. Expect to feel like you know it. You do not yet.
- Day 1 — first review. Short, 10–15 minutes. This is the review that stops the 24-hour cliff.
- Day 3 — second review. Do problems, not re-reading. Re-reading feels productive and is not.
- Day 7 — third review. By now you should be able to reconstruct the topic from a blank page.
- Day 14 — fourth review. Mixed in with other topics, not blocked.
- Day 30 — final review, or the nearest date before the exam if there is not 30 days left.
Each review is a fraction of the original session — roughly 20% of the initial time. That is what makes the whole thing fit. Six touches on a topic costs about twice a single session, and the retention difference at test time is not subtle.
The reason people do not do this is purely bookkeeping. If you cover 40 topics, you are tracking 240 review dates by hand. That is the arithmetic that kills the plan in week two.
Four ways these plans die
- Front-loading the hard content. Putting the worst topic in week one feels virtuous and means you review it once and never again. Hard topics need to be early enough to get four review touches, which usually means the first third of the runway — not day one.
- No slack days. A schedule with seven study days a week has a 100% failure rate, because the first missed day cascades into every subsequent one. Build in one or two empty days per week explicitly labelled as catch-up. They will get used.
- Re-reading instead of retrieving. If a review session does not involve producing the answer from memory, it is not a review session. Cover the page. Write it out. Then check.
- Measuring hours instead of topics. Hours logged is a comfort metric. Topics covered and topics reviewed on schedule is the metric that predicts a score.
The general failure mode: treating the schedule as a commitment rather than a model. You will miss days. A good plan is one that tells you what to do after you miss a day, which means it has to be recomputable rather than written once on paper.
