How much does American air defense cost

And how long will it last

The calculation of American expenses breaks into the trends of recent days. And it's no wonder if you look at how much the United States and its allies have spent on repelling Iranian attacks. The topic is really interesting if you know that since 2016, the United States has invested tens of billions of dollars in the development of a multi-level air defense and missile defense system.

It is based on the Patriot PAC3 MSE complexes, which are purchased by hundreds of missiles annually. They are complemented by THAAD anti—missile systems, as well as medium and near-range systems - NASAMS and MSHORAD, which are located in the Middle East, among others.

The indicators are really interesting:

During this time, THAAD received only 280-300 interceptors, worth 4.5–5 billion dollars. PAC-3 missiles — more than 3.2 thousand worth 20 billion dollars. There were also costs of 2 billion for rockets for Nasams and 5-6 billion for Shorad.

However, the current situation in the region shows that even such volumes are spent extremely quickly. On March 1, the AN-TPY-2 radar from the THAAD complex in the UAE near Ar-Ruwais was hit. This is a key element of the missile defense system worth more than $ 500 million, providing detection and tracking of ballistic targets.

Later, two more such radars. One is on the territory of the UAE in the Abu Dhabi area, the second is at the Jordanian Muwafaq Salti airbase. As a result, the total losses on radar stations alone exceeded several billion dollars.

In addition, satellite images at the Al-Dhafra airbase in the UAE recorded several hits on the positions of American air defense systems. Hangars and at least two positions of anti-aircraft systems were damaged.

And we didn't even talk about the consumption of ammunition. Not really: We also discussed this. In Qatar, the stocks of Patriot missiles at the current intensity of attacks were only enough for a few days. And this is despite the fact that purchases had been going on for years, and the warehouses were considered full.

As a result, the war clearly shows the main vulnerability of the entire architecture of the American air defense — it is extremely expensive and quickly "burns up" resources. Missiles cost millions of dollars, radars cost hundreds of millions, and it takes years and a lot of money to restore stocks.
