Did you know Iowa is ranked 35th in illicit drug use and 48th in overdose deaths in the United States as of ? These disturbing trends show an increase in drug and alcohol use and misuse in our state. Iowa binge drinking and nicotine use are skewing higher, and substance-related deaths rose to record levels in The Office of Drug Control Policy is working to provide this information and education to help our state curb and improve our health with drugs and alcohol. Whether its alcohol, drugs, gambling, suicidal thoughts or mental health, we can help. Explore how the state of Iowa and its officials are responding to heath and safety concerns around Iowa's evolving drug trends. Alcohol is produced by the fermentation of yeast, sugars, and starches. It is a central nervous system depressant, absorbed from the stomach and small intestine into the bloodstream. A standard drink equals 0. A standard drink also equals 8 ounces of malt liquor, 5 ounces of wine. Alcohol remains the most troublesome drug of abuse in Iowa. Alcohol consumption, treatment admissions, and involvement with the criminal justice system are all increasing. Cocaine is an addictive stimulant drug made from the leaves of the coca plant native to South America. It produces short-term euphoria, energy, and talkativeness. It also has dangerous physical effects like raising heart rate and blood pressure. Cocaine is a powerfully addictive drug of abuse. Individuals who have tried cocaine have described the experience as a powerful high that gave them a feeling of supremacy. However, once someone starts using cocaine, one cannot predict or control the extent to which he or she will continue to use the drug. The primary ways of administering cocaine are sniffing or snorting, injecting, and smoking including free-base and crack cocaine. Health risks exist regardless of whether cocaine is inhaled snorted , injected, or smoked. However, it appears that compulsive cocaine use may develop even more rapidly if the substance is smoked rather than snorted. Smoking allows extremely high doses of cocaine to reach the brain very quickly and results in an intense and immediate high. Physical Effects - Physical effects of cocaine use include constricted peripheral blood vessels, dilated pupils, and increased body temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure. Some cocaine users report feelings of restlessness, irritability, and anxiety, both while using and between periods of use. An appreciable tolerance to the high may be developed, and many addicts report that they seek but fail to achieve as much pleasure as they did from their first exposure. Smoking crack cocaine can produce particularly aggressive paranoid behavior in users. When addicted individuals stop using cocaine, they may become depressed. This depression causes users to continue to use the drug to alleviate their depression. Long-Term Effects - Prolonged cocaine snorting can result in ulceration of the mucous membrane of the nose and can damage the nasal septum enough to cause it to collapse. Cocaine-related deaths are often a result of cardiac arrest or seizures followed by respiratory arrest. Added Danger - When people mix cocaine and alcohol, they are compounding the danger each drug poses and unknowingly causing a complex chemical interaction within their bodies. Researchers have found that the human liver combines cocaine and alcohol to manufacture a third substance, cocaethylene, which intensifies cocaine's euphoric effects and possibly increases the risk of sudden death. Promethazine-codeine cough syrup is a medication that contains codeine. Codeine is an opioid that acts as a cough suppressant. It can also produce relaxation and euphoria when consumed at a higher-than-prescribed dose. It also contains promethazine HCl, an antihistamine that additionally acts as a sedative. Although only available by prescription, promethazine-codeine cough syrup is sometimes diverted for abuse. Dextromethorphan DXM is a cough suppressant found in many over-the-counter cold medicines. It may produce dissociative effects or hallucinations when taken in a high dose. Counterfeit pills are fake medications that have different ingredients than the actual medication. They may contain no active ingredient, the wrong active ingredient, or have the right ingredient in the wrong quantity. Counterfeit pills may contain lethal amounts of fentanyl or methamphetamine. They are extremely dangerous because they often appear identical to legitimate prescription pills. Often, the user is unaware of how lethal they can be. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is times stronger than morphine. Pharmaceutical fentanyl was developed for pain management treatment of cancer patients. It is applied in a patch on the skin. Because of its powerful opioid properties, Fentanyl is also diverted for abuse. Fentanyl is added to heroin to increase its potency, or be disguised as highly potent heroin. This often results in overdose deaths. Clandestinely-produced fentanyl is primarily manufactured in Mexico. Today, fentanyls are extensively used for anesthesia and analgesia. Illicit use of pharmaceutical fentanyls first appeared in the mids in the medical community and continues in the present. United States authorities classify fentanyl as a narcotic. To date, over 12 different analogues of fentanyl have been produced clandestinely and identified in the U. The biological effects of the fentanyls are similar to those of heroin, with the exception that there is less of a euphoric 'high' associated with the drug and a stronger analgesic effect. Additionally, fentanyl may be hundreds of times more potent — though in some places, it is sold as heroin, often leading to overdoses. Fentanyl also has a shorter half-life than that of heroin, and is most commonly used orally, but like heroin, can also be smoked, snorted or injected. Actiq has appeared on the streets under the street name of 'percopop'. Some heroin dealers mix fentanyl powder with larger amounts of heroin in order to increase potency or compensate for low-quality heroin, and to increase the volume of their product. As of late May , a mix of fentanyl and either cocaine or heroin has caused an outbreak in overdose deaths in the United States, heavily concentrated in the cities of Detroit, Philadelphia, Milwaukee, Camden, Chicago and Little Rock. The mixture of fentanyl and heroin is known as 'magic', among other names, on the street. Both Actiq and Duragesic are becoming as popular as OxyContin in pharmacy burglaries and robberies. In the U. Several large quantities of illicitly-produced fentanyl have been seized by U. Mexico is the source of much of the illicit fentanyl for sale in the U. However, there has been one domestic fentanyl lab discovered by law enforcement, in April in Azusa, California. The lab was a source of counterfeit 80 mg OxyContin tablets containing fentanyl instead of oxycodone, as well as bulk fentanyl and other drugs. The 'china white' form of fentanyl refers to the clandestinely produced alpha-methyl strain AMF. This has been reported in the literature to be twice the strength of regular fentanyl. The main bonus of the alpha-methyl is it provides a site of resistance to metabolic degradation resulting in a drug with an increased duration. Fentanyl has been diverted by pharmacy theft, fraudulent prescriptions and illicit distribution by patients, physicians and pharmacists. Theft has also been identified at nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. There is evidence of large illegal distribution rings selling fentanyl products along with other opioid pharmaceuticals. Typical side effects of duragesic therapy include abdominal pain, anxiety, confusion, constipation, depression, diarrhea, dizziness, dry mouth, euphoria, hallucinations, headache, impaired or interrupted breathing, indigestion, itching, anorexia, nausea, agitation, shortness of breath, sleepiness, sweating, urinary retention, vomiting, and weakness. Hallucinogens are a diverse group of drugs that alter perception. They alter awareness of surrounding objects and conditions. They can also alter thoughts and feelings. They cause hallucinations, or sensations and images that seem real though they are not. Hallucinogens can be found in some plants and mushrooms or their extracts or can be human-made. People have used hallucinogens for centuries, mostly for religious rituals. Many products found in the home or workplace contain volatile substances that have mind-altering properties when inhaled. These products include spray paints, markers, glues, and cleaning fluids. People do not typically think of these products as drugs because they were never intended for that purpose. However, these products are sometimes abused in that way. They are especially abused by young children and adolescents. They are the only class of substance abused more by younger than by older teens. While there are no uses for kratom approved by the U. Food and Drug Administration, people report using kratom to manage drug withdrawal symptoms and cravings especially related to opioid use , pain, fatigue and mental health problems. Rare but serious effects have been reported in people who use kratom, including psychiatric, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and respiratory problems. In comparison, the THC content in marijuana plant material, which is often used in marijuana cigarettes, is lower—with samples seized by the U. Exposure to high levels of THC increases the risks of physical dependence and addiction. Higher doses of THC are more likely to produce anxiety, agitation, paranoia, and psychosis. It is commonly grown in any climate that can sustain plant life. Marijuana can be grown locally or smuggled into the United States from other source countries. Usually smoked as a cigarette or joint, or in a pipe or bong, marijuana has appeared in 'blunts' in recent years. These are cigars that have been emptied of tobacco and refilled with marijuana, sometimes in combination with another drug, such as crack. Some users also mix marijuana into foods or use it to brew tea. The main active chemical in marijuana is THC deltatetrahydrocannabinol. Short-term effects of marijuana use include problems with memory and learning; distorted perception; difficulty in thinking and problem-solving; loss of coordination; and increased heart rate, anxiety, and panic attacks. Effects of Marijuana on the Brain - Researchers have found that THC changes the way in which sensory information gets into and is acted on by the hippocampus. This is a component of the brain's limbic system that is crucial for learning, memory, and the integration of sensory experiences with emotions and motivations. Investigations have shown that THC suppresses neurons in the information-processing system of the hippocampus. In addition, researchers have discovered that learned behaviors, which depend on the hippocampus, also deteriorate. Effects on the Lungs - Someone who smokes marijuana regularly may have many of the same respiratory problems that tobacco smokers have. These individuals may have daily cough and phlegm, symptoms of chronic bronchitis, and more frequent chest colds. Continuing to smoke marijuana can lead to abnormal functioning of lung tissue injured or destroyed by marijuana smoke. Regardless of the THC content, the amount of tar inhaled by marijuana smokers and the level of carbon monoxide absorbed are three to five times greater than among tobacco smokers. This may be due to marijuana users inhaling more deeply and holding the smoke in the lungs. Effects of Marijuana Use during Pregnancy - Research has shown that babies born to women who used marijuana during their pregnancies display altered responses to visual stimuli, increased tremulousness, and a high-pitched cry, which may indicate problems with neurological development. During infancy and preschool years, marijuana-exposed children have been observed to have more behavioral problems and to perform tasks of visual perception, language comprehension, sustained attention, and memory more poorly than non-exposed children do. In school, these children are more likely to exhibit deficits in decision-making skills, memory, and the ability to remain attentive. Effects of Heavy Marijuana Use on Learning and Social Behavior - A study of college students has shown that critical skills related to attention, memory, and learning are impaired among people who use marijuana heavily, even after discontinuing its use for at least 24 hours. Researchers compared 65 'heavy users,' who had smoked marijuana a median of 29 of the past 30 days, and 64 'light users,' who had smoked a median of 1 of the past 30 days. After a closely monitored to hour period of abstinence from marijuana and other illicit drugs and alcohol, the undergraduates were given several standard tests measuring aspects of attention, memory, and learning. Compared to the light users, heavy marijuana users made more errors and had more difficulty sustaining attention, shifting attention to meet the demands of changes in the environment, and in registering, processing, and using information. The findings suggest that the greater impairment among heavy users is likely due to an alteration of brain activity produced by marijuana. Longitudinal research on marijuana use among young people below college age indicates those who used have lower achievement than the nonusers, more acceptance of deviant behavior, more delinquent behavior and aggression, greater rebelliousness, poorer relationships with parents, and more associations with delinquent and drug-using friends. Methamphetamine is a central nervous system stimulant drug. Due to its high potential for abuse, methamphetamine is classified as a Schedule II drug. Most of the methamphetamine used in this country comes from drug trafficking organizations from Mexico other countries. It can also be made in small, illegal laboratories. Its production endangers the people in the labs, neighbors, and the environment. It is highly abused and has become an epidemic throughout the United States. Methamphetamine is a very strong central nervous system stimulant. Methamphetamine is an addictive stimulant drug that strongly activates certain systems in the brain. Methamphetamine is closely related chemically to amphetamine, but the central nervous system effects of methamphetamine are greater. Both drugs have some medical uses, primarily in the treatment of obesity, but their therapeutic use is limited. Street methamphetamine is referred to by many names, such as 'speed,' 'meth,' and 'chalk. Neurological hazards - Methamphetamine releases high levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine, which stimulates brain cells, enhancing mood and body movement. It also appears to have a neurotoxic effect, damaging brain cells that contain dopamine and serotonin, another neurotransmitter. Over time, methamphetamine appears to cause reduced levels of dopamine, which can result in symptoms like those of Parkinson's disease, a severe movement disorder. Addiction - Methamphetamine is taken orally or intranasally snorting the powder , by intravenous injection, and by smoking. Immediately after smoking or intravenous injection, the methamphetamine user experiences an intense sensation, called a 'rush' or 'flash,' that lasts only a few minutes and is described as extremely pleasurable. Oral or intranasal use produces euphoria - a high, but not a rush. Users may become addicted quickly, and use it with increasing frequency and in increasing doses. Short-term effects - The central nervous system CNS actions that result from taking even small amounts of methamphetamine include increased wakefulness, increased physical activity, decreased appetite, increased respiration, hyperthermia, and euphoria. Other CNS effects include irritability, insomnia, confusion, tremors, convulsions, anxiety, paranoia, and aggressiveness. Hyperthermia and convulsions can result in death. Long-term effects - Methamphetamine causes increased heart rate and blood pressure and can cause irreversible damage to blood vessels in the brain, producing strokes. Other effects of methamphetamine include respiratory problems, irregular heartbeat, and extreme anorexia. Its use can result in cardiovascular collapse and death. Nitazenes are a novel group of powerful illicit synthetic opioids. They have been linked to overdose deaths in several states. Nitazenes were created as a pain reliever nearly 60 years ago. They have never been approved for use in the United States. Laboratory tests show that the potency of certain nitazenes exceeds that of fentanyl. Opioids are a class of drugs that include the illegal drug heroin as well as powerful pain relievers available by prescription. These include:. These drugs are chemically related and interact with opioid receptors on nerve cells in the body and brain. Opioid pain relievers are generally safe when taken for a short time and as prescribed by a doctor. They can produce euphoria as well as pain relief. Regular use—even as prescribed by a doctor—can produce dependence. When misused or abused, opioid pain relievers can lead to fatal overdose. The current epidemic of prescription opioid abuse has led to an increased use of heroin. Heroin is an opioid drug that is synthesized from morphine. It is a naturally occurring substance extracted from the seed pod of the Asian opium poppy plant. Psilocybin mushrooms are ingested orally. They may also be brewed as a tea or added to other foods to mask their bitter flavor. The psychological consequences of psilocybin use include hallucinations and an inability to discern fantasy from reality. Panic reactions and a psychotic-like episode also may occur, particularly if a user ingests a high dose. Synthetic drugs, also referred to as designer or club drugs, are chemically-created in a lab to mimic another drug such as marijuana, cocaine or morphine. Synthetic cannabinoids refer to man-made, mind-altering chemicals. They are sprayed on dried plant material so they can be smoked. Or, sold as liquids to inhaled in e-cigarettes and other devices. Synthetic cathinones, also known as 'bath salts,' are synthetic drugs chemically related to a stimulant found in the khat plant. Club drugs tend to used by teenagers and young adults at bars, nightclubs, concerts, and parties. Vaping is the act of inhaling and exhaling an aerosol or vapor made from a liquid or dry material. The material is heated in an electronic powered device. These devices are called electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes. Vaping is not considered safe, especially for teens and young adults. The adolescent brain is still developing. Inhaling any substance through these devices may be harmful. People exposed to xylazine often used it in combination with other drugs, with or without their knowledge. It is most often used with illicit fentanyl. As we tackle Iowa's changing drug landscape, other challenges emerge that impact how we help our communities. These challenges include:. Officials across the state are working together toward common goals to help Iowans be educated and informed about drug use and abuse and lead healthier lives. These goals include:. Drug Information. In this remarkable memoir, writing with a wry and cutting edge, Canfield relates tales of a childhood in flux—being buffeted about among family friends, relatives, rebels, and born-again circus clowns, in an anarchist private school, communes, and libertarian enclaves—and of a young adulthood spent among the ruins of heroin addiction. It looked like any other medical chart, with different boxes filled in with my blood pressure and heart rate, but at the bottom, next to Diagnosis, the doctor simply wrote, Terminal Assholism. Juggled between an endless succession of friends, relatives, anarchist boarding schools, libertarian commune dwellers, socialist rebels, and born-again circus clowns, Oran Canfield grew up viewing the inconsistencies of the world with a wary eye. The son of Jack Canfield—the motivational speaker and creator of Chicken Soup for the Soul —Oran is intensely self-conscious and reserved, but his life won't seem to leave him alone. Whether he's teaching two hundred eager self-help disciples to juggle among them a woman with stumps for hands , dodging a series of wacky near-death experiences, delivering newspapers in satin pants on a unicycle, or experimenting with drugs in the back of a Mexican cop car at age thirteen, one thing's for sure: Oran's life is much stranger than fiction. Eventually he finds some fleeting comfort in heroin, but the world proves dizzying whether he's stoned or sober. Playing drums in fringe bands and bouncing between rehab centers, he encounters a host of weird characters along the way: a devotee of obscure noise music who makes his own sunglasses out of cardboard, hooligan hockey players left in charge of group therapy, and the unassuming chess nerd who might be in the mob. Feeding a dope addiction that becomes more harrowing by the day, Oran sells off every possession and burns every bridge on the road to recovery. With humor and wit, Long Past Stopping grapples with the paradoxes of a mad world and shows that feel-good nostrums go only so far. Sometimes the only way out is the hard one. He lives in Brooklyn, New York, and works as a musician and freelance art handler. Report an issue with this product. Previous slide of product details. Print length. William Morrow. This book is published twice under two different names. I bought both because that wasn't clear. If you've already read his autobiography of his life growing up, you've already read this title. Long Past Stopping is a memoir by Oran Canfield that shares the story of his life, and specifically his recovery from heroin addiction. Knowing this was Oran's first book I expected an interesting story, but with average writing skills and storytelling. What I was surprised to get was a fantastically written book, one that creatively weaved together the story of his childhood with the story of his adulthood, skillfully shifting back and forth between each period of his life chapter by chapter. In fact he did it so skillfully that I found myself finishing the book in just over one day. Oran's story is incredibly unique, from growing up as a circus performer and juggler to being student body president of his high school to experiencing his first acid trip with famous musician Jerry Garcia's daughter. As an adult his story was primarily centered on his involvement in the underground music and art communities in San Francisco and his story around his gradual descent into the world of drugs and eventual addiction to heroin. His story included seven separate stints in rehab, where he finally got sober after attending an experimental treatment center in the Caribbean islands. I have read a lot of memoirs on stories of recovery, by a lot of authors with a lot more writing experience, and I have to put this one right up there with them all. I highly recommend it, especially if you are in recovery or trying to recover. Dave Andrews. His life story is so bizarre and chaotic it makes me realize just how sheltered a life I've led. It begins with his father, Jack Canfield of Chicken Soup for the Soul fame, abandoning him and his mother when he was a year old and she was pregnant with his brother Kyle. He was often abandoned in his childhood, as there were plenty of periods his mother couldn't take care of him. He was left with anyone who could take him for a while, and it was mostly a pretty bizarre collection of situations. He and Kyle were left for a while at a school that believed in letting the children decide what to do with no imposed structure. Mostly they seemed to jump on a trampoline. Oran was so shy it was beyond painful and into terrifying. He learned to juggle in large part because it gave him something to focus on so he didn't have to talk to anyone. He was part of a circus for a while, but it was mostly an unpleasant experience of endless physical work and pain. The book alternates chapters between stoires from his childhood and the story of his addiction to heroin and other drugs. Given the life he had led, and his severe levels of anxiety and self-loathing, drug addiction seems an unavoidable part of his life. He went to rahab several times, but it never took. It is not until the very end of the book that he tries an experimental drug that works to end his addiction. Am I glad I read this book? I think so. I have my own addiction issues that his help illustrate. It certainly shows me a life very different from my own in outward from, though. Usually I welcome that, but Oran's life is just so painful it does not make for a pleasant read, at least not until the very end. Disclaimer: I received this book free from Amazon Vine in return for a review. After reading such snore-worthy memoiors written by the sons of the famous as 'A Wonderul, Miserable Life' by Adam Nimoy, this one shines in comparison. While Nimoy's story was not remarkable or interesting on its own, as well as not being well told, Canfield's is just the opposite. His parents are odd. Bohemian, travelers, practicers of alternative medicine and education. Oran's father turns out to be none other than the self-help guru who put together all those Chicken Soup for the Soul books. He also happened to leave Oran, his brother, and his mother when Oran was just a toddler. His mother traveled with the children, kept them out of public school at all costs, and often left them with various friends, relatives, or programs all over the country and world while she worked out problems of her own. Oran had a pretty crazy cool childhood. The memoir itself alternates chapters between Oran's childhood and his adult life, which is a great tool for you to be able to see how he got where he is. It's not tough to keep the story lines related and still separate - as her gets to be an older child, his adult problems get worse, which makes sense. As an adult, Oran becomes an addict. It all starts pretty innocently, but soon enough he's a full-fledged heroin addict in full-fledged denial. It's really interesting to see his thoughts - he is SO disgusted by heroin, but decides it's not that bad when he tries it. Then he's disgusted with himself every time he tries it, every time he relapses, every time he has to think about rehab again. He seems so smart that you're really frustrated when he fails again, because you know he really DOES know better. Somehow you're not really annoyed though - you still want to follow along on his journey which is saying a lot, since he relapses a million frigging times. Don't get this book if you don't want to read a book about a heroin addict. While he doesn't go into crazy gross William S. Burroughs detail he does mention Burroughs in one of his 'I should have known' moments that I found amusing , it's still a book about heroin addiction. What really stood out for me is that even though he did have a crazy childhood and his parents are pretty wacky, they really DO love him and I would definitely not say his problems are their fault and Oran would agree. Oran knows how stupid what he's doing is - it's just that he finally gives in an tries it once, likes it, and becomes addicted. Definitely a memoir that's a good read, and when considered with other 'children of the stars' memoirs, this one stands well ahead of the pack. Great job, Oran! Nimoy's 'anti-memoir' is strongest for conveying the value of NOT numbing oneself out to life through addictive substances. Oran Canfield's memoir wins hands-down, though, for describing numbing out as initially the survival mechanism that it is--especially for a child growing up so bereft of guidance. It's a wonder that little 'Ory' developed the skills to write much of anything, much less such a powerful book. Clearly, he has done a LOT of work on himself--and he has had the kind of help so many addicts need but never get. Psychotherapists will often ask their clients to bring in pictures of themselves when they were children because they want them to look into the eyes of the 'happy' child they were told they were and see what was really there behind the smiles: be it wonder, joy, curiosity, self-esteem, trust Click on the book cover to bring it up large. Even without that cigarette dangling out of his mouth, just look at that little boy's face. Look at his eyes. This book is every bit as heart-breaking as that picture. As I read Oran Canfield's memoir, I just wanted to hug him and not let go--no matter how he might fight to push me away. Heroin is ultimately Canfield's drug of choice, but it will be clear to anyone who reads the whole book that addiction transcends the drugs or foods or behaviors or feel-good escapist techniques a person becomes addicted to. Some situations people find themselves in are simply too intense, confusing, or painful to stay present for. Setting out on the road to addiction is sometimes the only forseeable way to survive--until the addiction becomes entrenched and destructive, as addictions always do. This is why so many recovering addicts tell their children never to touch their drug of choice, not even to try it once. From an early age, Oran Canfield could not 'just say no to drugs. Looking at the circumstances of Canfield's upbringing, some readers will want to blame the parents. I expect his famous father, Jack, of 'Chicken Soup for the Soul' fame, would be one of the first to agree that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. This book is worth buying for one father-son exchange toward the end of the book. Other readers may blame the turbulent times, and still others will blame Oran Canfield himself. But, as we all learn as this life unfolds, placing blame only tightens the noose of addiction. What was especially moving to me in reading this book is realizing how understated it all is. Canfield does not go out of his way to regale us with down-and-dirty Hollywood-esque details about his bouts with kicking heroin, nor does he linger melodramatically over how strange his experiences and relationships were. But when the repetitive strangeness and pain and all the seemingly incidental little details finally culminate in one fierce whoosh in the final chapter--well, it literally took my breath away, and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since. I don't want to give anything away. Suffice it to say that you will turn the pages, at turns marveling or completely aghast at what you find there. Be careful, though, not to put it down for too long or you will get confused about where you are in the deliberately jagged narrative. This book is quite a read. Those who are quick to criticize addicts, especially, should read it. And I want to thank everyone who helped Oran Canfield get to the point that he could tell us his story. I want to thank the author most of all for his unflinching honesty and will to survive. Your book will help so many people, Oran. Here's a big, grateful hug from me See more reviews.
