Door Handle Replacement
It's worth replacing door handles if you aren't happy with the way they look or if they are difficult to use. With a bit of patience, you can put in the new handle in no time.
Most modern door handles have cover plates that conceal the screws to give them a beautiful appearance. However, you'll need to attach them separately if the new handle doesn't have them attached already.
Remove the old handle
The door handle isn't only a decoration for your home, but it's also an important safety feature that lets you to lock and unlock your door. But, over time, your door handle may lose its grip, become loose or start to look old and worn. This is a sign that it's probably the time to replace your door handle.
If your door handle is becoming difficult to use, it may be time to replace it. This is an issue because it means that you can not lock or unlock your door, which could create an security risk to you and your family.
It is also a good idea to replace your door handle in the event that it's damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle is dangerous, particularly for children and elderly family members who might struggle to open it. They could become trapped. Fortunately, it's fairly simple to fix a damaged door handle by simply replacing the old one.
Modern door handles are generally standard sizes and will fit any door. If you're unsure if your new door handle will work, try removing the old one and measuring its housing holes. This will allow you to buy the right size door handle.
The easiest way to take off the door handle you have been using is to remove it from the door itself. Usually, a screwdriver is used. However some door handles have a cover plate that conceals the screws that mount them, so you'll need to pry off this to reach the screws beneath. After you have removed the handle that was previously used, take note of the way in which the spindle is attached. This will aid in aligning the new handle.

Alternatively, you can remove the door handle by removing it from the latch mechanism. You can use a screwdriver for removing the door handle. However, you'll need to locate the small latch which is located on the edge of the trim piece. After you have removed the latch, take the handle off the strike plate, and then the latch away from the door's edge.
Remove the Strike Plate
When replacing your handle, you'll also be required to replace the latch plate, which is the hole that the door's latch is inserted into when it closes. The box that the new handles are packaged in will have two different latch plates: one that is rectangular and the other a circular one (see the above diagram that outlines door handle parts). If your current latch plate has rectangular, swap it out for the round one so that the latch hooks onto the strike plate in a way that makes the handle more comfortable to operate.
The first step is to unhook the screw that is holding the latch plate. The screws can be very tight and will require some force to loosen. If you can, it might be beneficial to have another person help with this process.
After the screws are removed the latch should slide out of the door with ease. If it is stuck or doesn't move, use a small nail file to scrape around the edges of the latch plate. This can sometimes open the plate.
Now you can prepare the new strike plate to be installed. Install the latch plate in the doorjamb using the wood screws that were included with your new handles. Be careful not to over-tighten the screws, as this can damage the strike plate.
If you're unsure whether the latch plate is in its correct position, shut and open the door to see whether it locks and closes properly. If not then you'll need to adjust the strikeplate either up or down, or forward or back until the door closes properly.
If the door continues to move or jiggles, then you may need to increase the size of your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more common on older doors. It could be caused by wear and tear hinges that are too shallow, the wrong size latch, or damaged strike plate. If this is the situation, follow the same procedure for adjusting the strike plate, but with an iron file instead of a chisel and hammer.
Eliminating the Latch
The latch is a bent metal piece that slides in and out of a hole in the inside of your door. The latch moves forward when you turn the handle. It also hooks into a hole on the door's frame so that the door stays closed. If your door wobbles when you close it, a new latch may be all that is needed to fix the problem.
The screws that support the door latch are difficult to locate, but you can usually use a screwdriver to make a small hole in the trim plate and then pry the latch off. After removal of the trim plate you will be able to pull off the latch and the bolts that hold it and the spindle that holds it.
If the latch is not easily removed, use a paperclip or tool to take it off the handle mechanism. Insert the item in the recessed slot of the latch, and gently twist it or jiggle until the handle and latch begin to split. It is possible repeat this process a few times before you can take the latch off.
After the old latch is removed, you should be able to insert the new latch into the slot without any problems. Use the new screws to attach the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure that it is properly positioned in the slot and aligned with the screw chambers.
Check the backset of the current handle (the distance between the center of the large hole on the door's front and the edge) before installing the new handle. Make sure that the size of the latch of the new handle matches the measurement.
If you are replacing the latch or handle or handle, or if your previous lock cylinder is damaged then you'll need an entirely new one. If you're not changing the locks, the new latch will fit into your existing recess and will work with the keys you have currently. Select a latch with rectangular cover plates to match your old handles.
