When it comes to selfies, they’re not that easy to take. It took me years, literally years, to figure out which sexy selfie poses make me shine. I thought you just took a photo of yourself—simple and easy. But there’s more that goes into it… a lot more.
It’s not just opening your eyes from a blissful sleep and looking flawless. If that’s what you’ve been doing and why you’re disappointed, those flawless morning photos are rare. Though you may have sucked taking selfies in high school, it’s time to change it.
Taking a perfect selfie is mostly based on what you’re not showing on camera. The little tips and tricks that selfie champions use to look effortless. Whether you’re taking them for yourself or sending them to a special someone, it’s a skill you need to know.

Sometimes, I just take selfies for my own self-pleasure, never showing them to anyone. Other days, I take selfies and feel the need to post them on every social media account I have.
You don’t need a reason to take a selfie, but you should know how to take the right one. Rock the selfie look with some helpful selfie-taking tips.
#1 There are no official rules. There aren’t any “official” rules when it comes to taking a selfie. Much of it is you experimenting and figuring out what works for your body. Of course, the tips below can help you, but for some of you, they’ll do the opposite. So, test these tips out, but don’t get bummed out if they don’t do you justice. Everyone is different. [Read: How to glow up and instantly transform inside and out]
#2 Get in the mood. When it comes to taking a killer selfie, mood matters. For sure, you can take selfies when you’re feeling a bit down, but the best selfies are when you have the confidence of a bull. When you love yourself and in the mood to throw some looks at the camera, start taking selfies.
#3 Don’t overdo it. Nowadays, people are focusing too much on pouting or pushing their breasts out for the camera. But you don’t need to overdo it. In the selfie world, less is more. When it comes to posing, chill out. The best shots are when you’re relaxed and natural. If you’re trying to look like a Vogue model, it’s not going to work. #4 Wear what you love. If you’re most confident in underwear and bra, wear them. If you prefer to wear jeans and a t-shirt, put them on. The best selfies are when you’re feeling confident and sexy. If you’re comfortable in what you’re wearing, it’ll show. So, don’t dress yourself up in something you think other people will like. Wear what you like.
#5 Master lighting. When it comes to taking the perfect selfie, it’s all about the lighting. With the right light, you can look stunning. Choose sensual, yellow light. It’ll create a warm and sexy atmosphere, picking up your best features. Spend time playing around with the light and find the perfect angle.
Now that you know the selfie essentials, here are some sexy selfie poses for you to try out.
#1 Lying on your stomach. It’s one of the most popular selfies poses for a reason. You can’t go wrong with this pose. It’s alluring, it’s sexy, and it drags you in. You’ll be able to show off your curves while still being playful and sweet. Throw your hair over to one side, and you’ll be va-va-voom in your selfie. [Read: How to take a good selfie and look cute every time you snap a photo]
#2 Lying on the bed on your back. Well, this is a pretty suggestive pose if you’re going to be sending it to your partner. First thing: make sure your bed is clean! Lay on your back, taking the shot above you. You can be in clothes or in your underwear; it doesn’t really matter because this will automatically make you look sexy. [Read: Lingerie selfies and how to perfect the art of foreplay from afar]
#3 In front of a mirror. If you have a mirror, then why aren’t you using it for selfies? Mirrors are great for selfies as you can play around with angles, even getting full body shots. When using a mirror, play around with the angles. Maybe an over-the-shoulder shot will show off your curves.
#4 Side body shot. If you’re a fan of Kendall Jenner, then you know this pose very well. The side body shot is great if you’re looking to accentuate your booty. Your curves look their best on this angle, as it elongates your body. If you’re at the gym, this is all a great way to show off your hard work.
#5 Add your friends. When it comes to selfies, they’re always better when they’re done with friends. You don’t need to go all out, but having fun with friends can produce some great shots. Group selfies can be done wherever you like, whether it’s a bathroom, park, or in class. [Read: Why good friends matter and how to build lasting friendships]
#6 Morning selfie. Not all of us can pull this one off. I’m a heavy sleeper, and when I wake up in the morning, I’m anything but flawless. However, if you give yourself a couple of minutes to wake up, the morning selfie can look angelic and sexy. While you’re under the covers, take a photo of yourself in bed.
#7 The selfie stick. Get a selfie stick. Yes, I said selfie stick, and start taking selfies. Though this isn’t a pose, with a selfie stick you have endless options of how you can look. Does it matter what you wear? No, not as long as you feel sexy.
#8 Get flexible. If you’re someone who can do the splits, why not show it off in a selfie? Flexibility is hot! Plus, this is a great selfie to take if you’re planning to send it to your partner. Whether you’re doing the bridge, yoga poses, handstand, or splits, this will surely get his attention.
#9 The bathroom shot. This is one of those sexy selfie poses you usually see with girls who’ve just been at the gym. They’ll sit on the bathroom sink, resting one leg on it and take a selfie. Also known as #sinkbooty. It’s an easy selfie to take and automatically makes your booty pop. [Read: How to take sexy pictures and look great every time]
#10 Over the shoulder. If you want to catch a glimpse of your booty, then take an over-the-shoulder shot. Get yourself in front of a mirror and try it out. With the right filter and angle, you can make it look like an artsy shot.

For us at Modern Muse, boudoir is so much more than just taking pictures of a person in their under-things. It is about creating and holding space for you to make yourself vulnerable, to allow yourself to be unscripted and raw – it?s about creating an unforgettable experience where we make portraits with real emotional connection.
As a boudoir photographer, I have seen the transformation that happens when our clients are affirmed through their boudoir experience. Posing is a huge part of any boudoir session – and if you aren’t used to being in front of a camera, if can also be one of the most challenging parts of doing a session.
No matter what the styling or aesthetic is, boudoir comes down to body language. If our clients are stiff or uncomfortable, that will translate into the images. We want all our boudoir portraits to be truly intimate expressions of who you are. Your boudoir portraits should be as alive, as honest, as tangible and as sensual as you are. A lot of the poses that we do at a boudoir session are inspired by being in a bedroom – poses that are about being in a space where you feel free and at ease.
The more confident you feel, the more at ease you will feel. And that confidence and ease translates into beautiful boudoir photographs that are honest and authentic. Mindset matters. When you book a session with us, we will send you our Modern Muse prep guide that will walk you through the whole session experience and let you know what to expect.
Posing is 100% about being limber and able to move! It is not just holding one position. At our sessions there is movement – that?s what makes the images seem alive and real.
One of the most important parts for us in preparing for our boudoir sessions is to listen to our clients – we want these portraits to be authentically you.? When it comes to boudoir portraits – everything starts with talking. After our initial consult, I’ll send you our Modern Muse prep guide. We want you to feel completely comfortable so we can capture the best sides of you.
As I was thinking through what poses I love and what boudoir poses work with every kind of body. I wanted to narrow them down to seven of my best boudoir poses. These are poses that I love starting with – and clients love seeing in their albums and wall art. Practice these poses yourself to see how it affects your body. What poses highlight the parts of your body that you love?
So, what do they all have in common??
These flattering boudoir poses we can do with anybody and at any shoot – the wardrobe and the lighting and the textures and colors in the frame change the look and feel of the image. All of these poses are easy to learn and add movement to – change the direction of your gaze (directly at the camera, at the light source, at your own body, or close your eyes) and move your fingertips along your body. This does two things- draws attention back to your body and you can check in to how your body feels.
This is all about confidence and allure – it looks like it?s the easiest but is sometimes the most difficult to nail because so much of it is in the facial expression. This is a pose I like to start with and sometimes to end with too. Keep super casual and confident body language by curling up in a chair or on a couch or on the bed or maybe the floor. Bring one knee up and use the lines of that leg and your elbows to frame the face.
A silhouette exaggerates the curves of your body. And it doesn’t show everything.? Arch the back and get long through the spine. You stand in a position called contrapposto – with most of your weight on one foot so your shoulders and arms in a different direction than your hips. You can shift your weight back and forth and move your torso in the opposite way your hips and facing. This gives your body a much more interesting shape than if you were standing with weight equal on both legs and your shoulders and head facing the camera. You can exaggerate the pose even more to emphasize curves. Don’t fee like you have to hold still for silhouettes – movement is beautiful!
You can use a towel or a sheet for this implied nude favorite.? It may look like you have just stepped out of your bath, or are waking up. You don’t have to be naked underneath – but the viewer doesn’t know that. Get a forward rotation in the shoulders and hug the towel or the sheet against the front of your body. You can shoot this front the front, the side or the back.
Start seated and get a 45-degree angle between your shoulders and your hips so you are almost sliding off the couch (or bed or chair) and you arch your back and open your heart up towards the ceiling. Stagger your legs, use your fingertips to draw attention to where you want it.
Lay on your stomach in bed or on a couch, and use your elbows to prop up your head-turning your face toward the light.? Roll your hips so they are at 90 degrees from your body and also facing the light.? You can settle into this pose by bringing the upper knee in front.
Curl your shoulders forward and wrap your arms around yourself. You can add a knee in there if you want. Just leave a little space so you can see a bit of cleavage. Your arms will make the perfect intimate and vulnerable frame for your beautiful face. Also great for showing off jewelry. And your arms will look amazing.
Laying on your belly, arch your back so your hips push back toward the camera. This all about your shoulder blades and neck. Pull your hair off your neck with your hands. And drop your head. You can include more of the body and bum if you wish. You can go high key or low key.
And always – if you feel like laughing, laugh!
These are some of the go-to poses that we can use with all our clients. Slight variations may occur, of course. No two sessions and the same, but these are some of my favorite boudoir poses. No matter what wardrobe, these poses are timeless, elegant, sexy and simply beautiful.? Think of them as launch points.
For Modern Muse portraits, we don’t want out boudoir poses to be over the top. These seven sexy boudoir poses will make your photos authentic and intimate. Remember that mindset matters – so keep your hands and gaze moving.
Have fun trying our these seven sexy boudoir poses on either side of the camera!

In many areas, I crave consistency. I like when the subway comes on time and how my hair will be reliably perfect on the third day since my last wash . But one area where I’m disappointingly consistent is in my abysmal failure to take a sexy selfie . Whether I’m standing in front of my bathroom mirror, lying on my bed, or sneaking a quick nip shot in a bathroom stall at a bar, it never goes well.
Sometimes the lighting is dim or the camera lens on my phone is dirty. Other times, I can't convince my face and body to do something sexy at the same time. The result is always a weirdly cropped, uncomfortable-looking photo that I'd rather delete than send to anyone else. And that sort of defeats the purpose of a nude selfie—at least, the ones I'm taking.
Instead of continuing to suffer from my chronic inability to take a hot nude, I turned to the experts: three New York City-area boudoir photographers who set, light, and shoot sexy photos as their actual jobs. Then I did an IRL boudoir shoot with one of them. Emerging from this session a bit wiser and with a much more convincing sultry bottom lip bite, I took everything I learned and applied it to my DIY “nudes” (which, for the purposes of this article, are not nude at all). Here’s literally everything I learned about how to take sexier nudes.
Disclaimer: There are, of course, no official “rules.”
I chatted with Irina Mednik of French Kiss Boudoir Photography , Elizabeth Beskin of 5th Avenue Digital , and Evgenia Ribinik of Evgenia Ribinik Boudoir Photography to get the lowdown on boudoir photography.
For the record, there’s an obvious difference between boudoir photos and nude selfies; one is the product of high-quality equipment and a professional photographer ’s keen eye, and the other is a product of, well, a naked bod and a cell phone. Still, the photographers gave me a lot of advice I didn’t know I needed, and I got something of a crash course in the art of nude photography.
Their first lesson: Mood matters, as much as any pose or facial expression. This shocked me. I’ve always been one to run to the nearest mirror and snap a quick pic—throwing caution, mental preparation, and lighting concerns to the metaphorical wind. No longer. According to my boudoir gurus, I should put some serious thought into wardrobe, lighting, scenery, and ~setting the mood~.
Their second lesson: When it comes to poses and facial expressions, less is more. I have a hard time getting my face to behave when I’m posing for pictures—nude or not—but all three photographers encouraged me to chill . The same goes for posing. Beskin told me that some of the most beautiful boudoir shots are those that capture natural, imperfect moments—because they capture the kind of authentic intimacy you share wit
