Convenience

A built-in microwave oven combination can save space on kitchen counters and give a stylish appearance to your kitchen. Since it functions as a microwave and traditional oven, you can heat up leftovers, frozen foods and meals that are pre-packaged in one appliance. It eliminates the necessity for separate countertop appliances or large wall ovens. A combination microwave oven can also be a good choice for those who want to modernize your kitchen without having to undergo any major renovations.

Microwave oven combos are available in a variety of different styles to match your kitchen decor. Some microwave oven combos have doors that swing open from right to left and others have drop-down models that open the same way as traditional ovens. You can also purchase an oven and microwave that opens in a drawer, similar to a cabinet. Microwave drawers are easy to reach and are great for small spaces where you need to minimize the use of counter space.

Combination microwaves also come with various features that aid in meal preparation and more practical. Some models feature the option of a sensor steam mode that adjusts the temperature and duration of your food automatically to ensure that you get perfectly steamed vegetables and fish. Other features include the broil element which allows you to quickly melt cheese and brown your favorite food. Crispwave(tm) in turn, can grill, bake, and crisp food items.

When selecting a microwave oven combination, make sure to take into consideration how often you'll use each function. If you'll use the oven more often than the microwave, you may be better off buying a double wall-oven. A combo oven has less capacity than an oven that is a standalone unit.

Energy Efficiency

Built-in microwave ovens are a great option for those with smaller kitchens in their house or apartment. They can save cabinet space that would otherwise be taken up by two separate appliances. Additionally, they can also help to reduce energy usage. They generally provide a more efficient cooking method than traditional wall ovens since they consume less energy. They can also be used to cook food or warm food items. This reduces the need for other appliances like toasters or warming plates.

When evaluating potential amended energy conservation standards, DOE conducts several analyses which include market and technology assessment, screening analysis, engineering analysis, and national impacts analysis (NIA). For this SNOPR, DOE will rely on its existing engineering analysis of microwave ovens to determine the maximum level of efficiency improvements that are technically feasible for this product category.

In the engineering analysis, DOE will compare the design parameters of a microwave to a set of energy performance goals. The engineering analysis will then determine the maximum improvement in energy efficiency that is technologically feasible based on the most advanced microprocessor-controlled model available on the market or in working prototypes, or the maximum reduction in energy consumption that is technically achievable with the current technologies available for this product class.

As part of the NIA, DOE will evaluate the impact on consumers of every product category including lifecycle cost savings as well as simple payback period ("PBP"). DOE will employ the Government Regulatory Impact Model, with an adaptation for microwavable ovens to calculate the industry net present value (NPV).

The impact on manufacturers will be evaluated as well, and DOE will use a modified version of its Industry Cash Flow model, which has been adapted for this product type to calculate manufacturing NPV. In addition, DOE will consider the potential impacts on small business manufacturers and other subgroups of manufacturers to determine if they could be disproportionately affected by these proposals.

In addition, DOE will consider whether the testing procedures for microwave ovens must be updated to include active mode energy usage and a possible integrated active mode energy use measurement. Currently, the test procedures only address standby mode power use.

Design

Microwaves generate heat by causing water molecules to vibrate in food. microwave and oven integrated depend on the circulation of hot air, while microwaves depend on waves to cause food molecules to vibrate. Combination wall ovens blend these two very different appliances into one unit that saves kitchen space and provides a sleek, modern aesthetic. But you need to carefully think about your needs and budget before investing in a combo wall oven. Many of the combination wall ovens in our ratings have issues with performance or design.
