How To Make Sex Doll
An interchangeable face of a RealDoll is seen at a sex-doll factory in San Marcos, California. The face attaches to the body via magnets.

The standard RealDoll comes in 18 female body styles and two male styles with five skin tones and 39 available faces. The company also makes custom dolls for whatever a client wants to pay for.

Freshly poured silicon dolls await further transformation. "You can make a hundred thousand different varieties of the human form, and there's always going to be one more," founder Matthew McMullen said. He said the company is now getting more requests for pubic hair and small breasts.

Story highlights Robert Benson photographed a sex-doll factory in Southern California The nine-person team at Abyss Creations produces 300-400 dolls a year
Abyss Creations makes RealDoll, a life-sized silicone figure with a fully poseable skeleton, interchangeable faces and penetrable orifices starting at $6,500. The company says it rarely pays for advertising, relying on word of mouth and a steady stream of press coverage since its first celebrity endorsement: shock jock Howard Stern in 1996.
Photographer Robert Benson discovered the factory last year. He had been searching for a sex-doll manufacturer to photograph during a visit to Japan. Much to his surprise, one of the most famous manufacturers was just a few miles from his San Diego home.
During a shoot in April, Benson captured the process of making a single doll from mold to makeup, and he met the team of nine that produces 300-400 dolls a year.
"Everyone was super passionate about what they're doing, and they take the work seriously," Benson said. "I guess the fascination wears off after a week and it becomes like any other job."
A single doll takes about 80 hours to make, starting with a silicone mold. After fingernails and nipples are shaped and painted, hair is added and makeup artists complete faces to a customer's specifications. Then the dolls are dressed and packaged in crates for shipping.
The standard RealDoll comes in 18 female body styles and two male styles with five skin tones and 39 available faces. The standard line also includes transgender bodies with male or female anatomy.
Custom orders start at $12,000 and depend on a client's imagination and budget: blue skin, green fish-like scales, fangs, elf ears, you name it. A popular request is for dolls resembling movie stars, the company says. While it cannot replicate a celebrity without express consent from the star or appropriate trust, it can approximate the look with the right face, body, hair and makeup. Another popular custom request is for male genitalia on a female body.
Founder Matthew McMullen, a professional artist and sculptor, made his first life-sized mannequin in 1996 while working for a Halloween mask manufacturer. After posting a picture of it on the internet, he started receiving inquiries, he said, and it became evident there was a market for realistic and usable mannequins.
The manufacturing process has changed over time as technology has improved. RealDoll is now available in versions weighing 60 to 80 pounds, down from 75 to 115. Otherwise, the variety and range has always been as expansive as human tastes and desires, McMullen said.
"You can make a hundred thousand different varieties of the human form, and there's always going to be one more," he said.

Making fake things look like real things takes time.
While the end result of incredibly realistic sex dolls is (meant to be) sexy, all those orifices and fake boobs and rubber nipples have to start somewhere, and that somewhere is lined up, disembodied, inside of a huge factory. Super Deluxe , an online video production company, took a little video tour inside a sex doll factory to give the curious masses an inside look into how the sexiest dolls in the world get made. And guess what? These things do not start out looking very sexy.
Behold! The innards of a fake woman!
Watch the video from Super Deluxe below. Just be aware it's quite obviously NSFW, as it includes the formation and development of fake genitals.

Silicone dolls are a preferred type of doll for those looking to make realistic-looking baby dolls like Reborns, as well as other types of art dolls and toys. The type of silicone used in dollmaking makes a firm, durable rubber that takes paint well. Dolls can be made entirely of connected silicone, but often silicone body parts like the head, legs and arms are attached to a cloth doll body. This project describes the method for making a simple doll with a cloth body and silicone head.
Sculpt the head you would like your doll to have out of plasticine clay, or another soft water-based clay. Make sure you include a neck with a base that is about 1/4 inch thicker than the rest of the neck, so that it will hold the neck inside the cloth body.
Spray the doll head with a clear sealer like Krylon Crystal Clear and let it dry completely. Add a thin wall of modeling clay in the middle of the head, from the base of the neck on one side to the other side, dividing the head in half.
Create a plaster mixture by adding water to gypsum powder. Stir it well until the mixture is soupy and free of air bubbles.
Paint a layer of plaster onto one side of the doll head sculpture. Let it dry completely. Paint a second layer and add strips of burlap.
Add continuing layers of plaster and burlap until you have a strong, thick mold. The larger your silicon doll head, the thicker the mold will need to be.
Let the mold cure completely for 6 hours, then repeat Step 3 through Step 5 on the opposite side of the head sculpture. Let the mold cure for 6 hours again. Pull the mold halves apart and clean out the majority of the clay.
Add clay to the inside walls of the mold until you have the thickness in clay that you would like your doll head to have when it is finished. Coat any exposed plaster with mold release.
Strap the mold halves back together with rope, then turn the mold over so that the neck opening is facing upward. Secure the mold in this position.
Mix together another batch of plaster and pour it directly into the mold, filling the cavity. Let the plaster cure completely.
Unstrap the mold and remove the plaster "core mold" piece. Clean all mold pieces until there is no clay.
Spray the inside of both mold halves and the core mold piece with mold release. Strap the mold halves together and insert the core mold, then turn the mold over.
Drill or carve a pouring hole into the mold at either the top or the side, in a place where you did not do much detail sculpting.
Put on a pair of latex gloves and mix together a batch of silicone RTV casting rubber. Pour the rubber mixture into the mold through the pouring hole until the mold is completely filled.
Let the rubber cure for 12 hours. Unstrap the mold and carefully pry the halves apart. Remove the core mold.
Paint, detail and decorate the head as desired, and coat your work with a sealer.
Put the base of the neck into the cloth body through the neck opening. Adjust the neck on the cloth body to fit.

Frugality is not high upon the list of defining virtues of the real doll enthusiast archetype. Although cheap compared to the lifetime expenditure pertaining to keeping a flesh and blood woman seduced, if you're willing to pay over $6,000 to have sex with a creepy, dead-eyed Barbie doll, you'd probably pay twice that to have sex with a super model's corpse.
Still, what is the impoverished real doll fetishist to do? $6,000 is an awful lot of bread, yet undeniable urges are there to be met. Luckily, the Homemade Sex Toys web page has an intriguing guide on making your own sex doll for a tenth of the price as one of those professionally designed airbrushed models. The end result isn't pretty, but perfect for the sort of person who has had sensual dreams about Elsa Lanchester from Bride of Frankenstein .
