Last year, explicit megasite Pornhub deleted all unverified videos , shocking sex workers and the internet at large. The decision came shortly after a New York Times opinion piece about the proliferation of child porn on the site.
While that article proved controversial given its sourcing of an anti-sex work conservative group, Pornhub still maintains that all accounts on the site need to be verified in order to upload videos (though you don't need to be verified to post comments).
"Pornhub has implemented safety and security measures that set the standard for compliance programs in the tech and social media industries," Pornhub told Mashable in an emailed statement.
"As we sought to create the absolute safest platform on the internet, uploader verification was a key policy in combating unwanted content and ensuring we remain at the forefront of safety in not just the adult content industry, but on the internet as a whole."
How does one get verified on Pornhub? To do so, you must apply to Pornhub's Model Program , which gives performers a percentage of ad revenue and offers additional paths to monetization, such as tips. Here's how:
The first step is a no-brainer: Create a free Pornhub account. You only need an email address, username, and password. Once you verify your email via a link sent to the address, you're good to go.
On desktop, you can use Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge for this step; on mobile, you can only use Chrome or Safari. To get verified on Pornhub, you must take a photo of your ID and perform a live face scan.
The ID verification goes through a service called Yoti , which Pornhub calls "the leading digital identity verification solution."
On Yoti, select your country and click "Add Photo." Next, select what type of ID (the choices will vary depending on your location) you're using, such as driver's license or state ID. With the exception of a passport, for which you'll upload the photo page, you'll need photos of the front and back of your ID. Yoti may reject the photos if they're too blurry, but you can always retake them as needed.
After that, Yoti performs a live face scan. Make sure your camera is at eye level and your room has good lighting. Once you consent to the scan, select "I'm Ready" and follow the prompts. The scan will fail if you don't move enough to confirm to the system that you're a live human being.
Once you've uploaded your ID photos and completed the scan, you can submit your model application on Pornhub's site. The form will ask you for your name, address, preferred method of payment, and whether you'll perform other services, like creating custom videos.
You have two weeks to complete this process once you start the application or else it expires, but it should only take you a few minutes. Applications are reviewed within 48 hours, and you'll receive either an approval or a notice that your application requires further attention.
That's it! Go forth and get verified.

PornHub is no longer the YouTube of adult entertainment. What was once a free-for-all platform where amateurs and professionals could upload unregulated content is now replaced by a verification system, following last December’s New York Times report and heavy scrutiny over the website’s exploitative practices.
Riddled with illegal content—which dates back to over a decade ago—and no system in place to monitor it, it seems as if PornHub only made the switch to verified content because of financial consequences when Visa and Mastercard suspended payment services on the site. Pornhub’s changes were long overdue, as the site previously hosted and profited from videos of child abuse, sex trafficking, and sexual assault.
The site was so riddled with unverified, unmonitored content, that following the implementation of a verification system, over 80 percent of videos were taken down from the website. Additionally, only paid videos are available for download, a drastic change from last year when all content—verified or not—could be downloaded instantly. By implementing a new identification system, PornHub attempts to create a safer platform that promotes sexual self-expression while retaining privacy and trust.
To upload photos or videos to PornHub, you must be an official content partner or be verified through PornHub’s model program. Yoti, a London-based company, offers a third-party identification system where users scan their official I.D. and face for verification before joining the program. The data is encrypted, and not even PornHub can see the information provided for authentication. This process prevents the spreading of exploitative, nonconsensual content, holds them legally accountable for their actions, and lowers monetization rates of illegal videos.
In the spirit of full transparency, I can count the number of times I have visited PornHub on one hand and I have never been on for longer than your classic ‘full-page-scroll-down before clearing the search history and exiting out of the browser’. So, when I sat down to get verified by PornHub, I thought of it as a pretty big deal.
I was hoping the verification process would be long and tedious, given that we are uploading PORN here. To my surprise, the entire process of signing up for a free account, getting verified, and joining the model program took no more than 20 minutes.
First, I created my account with an email, username, and password. (My username is ‘notdown2fuck’ if you ever want to find me.) I then navigated to the top of the page, where I clicked on the “upload” icon, which was immediately replaced by a message saying “user uploads are currently only available to members of our Model Program and Content Partner Program until our new verification system is launched.” I clicked on the model program link, which asked me to first verify my email and date of birth.
After, I was redirected to Yoti, where I had to use my laptop camera to take a photo of my driver’s license before holding my face up to the lens as they scanned me, in all my no-makeup and high ponytail glory. This was, Yoti assured me, to verify my humanness, and double-check that I’m not just a horny robot.
This official verification process took no more than a few minutes and I was soon redirected back to the PornHub website to fill out one more set of questions, including my full legal name, address, and payment method for when I - obviously - get paid millions for my steamy, be it nonexistent, content. Note: there are actually quite a few payment methods to choose from, ranging from direct deposit to cryptocurrency.
Following the final application, an informational page listing requirements for co-performers appeared, stating that anyone who performs in your videos must have their identifications verified and must submit a signed agreement that they are willing to provide upon request. If IDs are not approved, payouts may be delayed and videos removed from the site.
PornHub writes that they "require all members of our Model Program to maintain and certify upon upload that you hold valid government photo IDs, consent and release records for all performers appearing in the content.” This was something I hadn’t previously considered, and it did strengthens my confidence in PornHub’s commitment to the safety and legality of their hosted content.
PornHub has expressed plans to implement an identification system for users to freely upload and distribute content, but for now, the model program seems like a step towards positive change.
The process to join is quick and easy, and a significant step towards combating the dissemination of illegal content. Though much improvement needs to be made in the way we perceive and consume porn to protect sex-trafficking victims, minors, and sexual assault victims, PornHub has taken a small step towards a better-regulated future of porn.
So, after reading through and submitting all of the information necessary for me to join the model program, I drank a big glass of water, watched a video on what to expect when fostering a cat, and checked my email.
Much to my surprise, only two minutes after receiving the confirmation of my application, I received a congratulatory email from the porn host. “Hello, notdown2fuck,” the email read, “Congratulations!” And just like that, surprisingly quickly, I was PornHub verified.

On Twitter, the coveted blue check mark symbolizes that amongst the ever-growing pool of online voices, enough people have deemed your voice worthy that you earn a blue badge. It says: This person has a thing or two to say about this and that, and that thing or two is ostensibly of “public interest” and is “authentic.”
Of course, said blue check mark isn’t relegated to Twitter. Instagrammers are also eligible for the coveted honor of being deemed worthy of creating content that is again of “public interest.” But the honor is growing in breadth, and so now, amateur pornstars on Pornhub are also eligible for blue-check-mark recognition.
According to Twitter, the point of verifying accounts is “to make it easier for users to find who they’re looking for,” reports TweetBrander.com . “We concentrate on highly sought users in music, acting, fashion, government, politics, religion, journalism, media, advertising, business and other key interest areas. We verify business partners from time to time and individuals at high risk of impersonation.” All of which is to say that anyone can get verified, so long as they tweet and enough people read those tweets.
First, it’s important to note that a nybody can upload their homemade content to Pornhub as an amateur, provided they’ve signed up for an account, says Corey Price, VP of Pornhub. The difference, he says, is that verified amateurs are creators who participate in Pornhub’s Model Program . “In the Model Program, content creators get a share of ad revenue for self-made videos, sell their videos online, get recurring monthly income through fan club subscriptions and gain exposure to promote their other online activities,” says Price. “In order to get views, performers have to put in work to promote themselves and create compelling content, just like YouTubers and other social media influencers.”
Price adds that there are two types of models in the Model Program — professional and amateur. “Both Model types receive the same amount of visibility and earnings in the program,” he says. “The Professionals category is for industry professionals, whereas Verified Amateurs produce their own content.”
First, per the Pornhub blog , you have to sign up for a free Pornhub account and get verified by the Pornhub admins. To get verified, all you need to do is upload an image of yourself holding up a sign with your username and pornhub.com written on the sign. Or, “write it on your body,” per their website. Additionally, most of your face has to be visible in the image. In other words, no masks or sunglasses. “Digitally modified text or images will be rejected,” explains Porhub’s stipulations.
According to Price, their model program boasts some of the highest payouts for ad revenue across the entire adult industry, “paying out nearly all of the ad-revenue earned to the model content creators, and models can also sell videos directly on Pornhub and our promotional site Modelhub.com ,” he says. “We also have one of the most visited sites in the world. With over 120 million visits a day, verified amateurs are bound to find an engaged audience no matter what kind of content they produce.”
It’s worth pointing out, though, that while the website advertises that “top models can make over $40,000 per month,” the reality is that, at 64 cents per 1,000 views (which was 2018’s ad revenue per thousand impressions), you’d have to garner 62,500,000 views per month to achieve that feat.
Price says that Pornhub’s Model Program “boasts over 100,000 independent models.” Which means if you’re hoping to see all of them, it’s time to get cranking.

Once a willing host to a free-for-all of amateur content, Pornhub will now be a little more strict. Users can’t just upload the video(s) of their choosing anymore. Pornhub requires a verification process from here on out. Here’s everything you need to know about the new changes on verified porn.

Some will argue that the immense amount of unbridled, user-uploaded content was what propelled the platform into legendary status in its early years. But all good things must come to an end, right? Wrong. The incredibly hands off, anything goes culture fostered by Pornhub was everything but good. Stolen content , videos uploaded without permission, performers’ boundaries crossed, revenge porn , child sex abuse, and scammers all flourished under the site’s guise of “ free porn “.
In December of 2020, the New York Times brought the evils of Pornhub to the front page of mainstream media. Soon after this erupted, major payment processors MasterCard and Visa suspended services on the site. Despite the longevity of these claims (which date back as far as 2009), Pornhub never took action. A 2020 court document filed against the company by former associates of the Pornhub series Girls Do Porn states that Pornhub’s parent company, Mindgeek, knew its subsidiary was profiting off of exploitation and abuse. The document, which was originally reported on by Vice , states that “[MindGeek] simply did not care…until it was no longer profitable.” Disturbing just doesn’t seem to cut it.
And believe it or not, the story gets worse. Despite Pornhub’s past statements claiming the site was doing everything it could to protect performers (as well as its users), it clearly could have done more. And I don’t say that as some arbitrary diss. The site didn’t decide to purge its platform of all unverified problematic content until it was hit with financial consequences at the hands of credit card companies.
So while Pornhub’s move to become a reliable source for adult entertainment is a great one, it’s long overdue. Hopefully, this new era of content will prove to be better and safer than the last.
Pornhub Verified aims to be a safer way to watch porn. Previously, Pornhub let any of its users upload and download content without question. But now, with verified-only protocols, any content that was previously uploaded by unverified users can no longer be found on the site. Additionally, Pornhub only allows downloads on paid videos. And anyone who wants to upload content in the future has to be a verified user.
So what exactly constitutes a verified user? Well, Pornhub has made it clear that uploads are only coming from official content partners or members of Pornhub’s model program. Current and future members of the program are required to have their identification verified by London-based firm Yoti. “The verification process involves sending a current photo and ID that the hosting site itself never views. Once the third-party verifies the information, the data is encrypted. Even the company itself (Pornhub) cannot see it.”
At the end of the day, this vetting process should make it harder for content platforms and abusers to profit off of exploitative, illegal, or unethical content. By requiring legal identification, users who break the law can easily be identified and held accountable. This is a (small) win for anyone who’s ever made a sex tape, but it doesn’t make up for the harm already done.
