Line-up
The band's third album, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet arrangement of previous albums. It was a more powerful, consistent effort that had a harder edge than Hydra. The more edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the growth of the band. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing ability to play was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard playing was also sharper, more complex and less akin to earlier efforts.
After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live show in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album was released just a few months later and the group embarked on a long-distance tour in support of the album. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to discover songs that hadn't been recorded before. It was completed in 2001 and released as a double album titled Then and Now. It was the first album in the history of the band that did not include one single track with the word "A" in its title and it included one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and vocalist Williams was suffering from a severe case of laryngitis which limited his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.
Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia, met in England early in 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be reformed. The lineup, with the exception of Howe who was working with Yes during that period, was later renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band featured a special appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
