How To Explain Toto Asia To Your Mom

The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities abroad and operating in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the People's Republic of China. Toto believed that North America as a growth market for Washlet bidets and toilets, in contrast to its "base" markets of Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto documented Toto words to ensure that the future generation could be able to read the words. However, many words were being replaced with foreign words, such as dui from Bengali for verandah.

Origins

Toto's early history which began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan's economic expansion. In the early years of its existence, the company produced products to meet the demand for modern, contemporary urban housing. To accomplish this, it employed the country's first tunnel kiln to produce ceramics in continuous flow. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production, allowing for more efficiency and consistency.

In the latter half of the 1980s, the company began expanding outwards to take advantage of sales and new markets. It launched the Cera Trading Company, importing and distributing other products from other manufacturers to complement its own range of sanitary earthenware and plumbing fittings. This strategy helped increase sales and increased the firm's market share.

In the 1990s, Toto had shifted its focus on research and development of water-related household appliances. It also redesigned its system of distribution to better serve customers and increase profit. The company employed the same just-in-time approach to its supply chain management as well as sales program. This resulted in a greater level of customer satisfaction.

Toto continues to invent toilet technology. Its latest toilet has a strong, eco-friendly tornado flush. The company uses recycled water for its manufacturing process, and has a green buying policy. In addition to toilets, Toto manufactures faucets and bathtubs, as well as hand dryers that are more efficient in energy use than typical models.

The first Toto museum opened in 2015. It hosts exhibits on Toto’s seminal products and their evolution, the group companies (all of which are ceramics) and the history of plumbing, and other products like bath units. In a separate gallery you can view Toto products that are sold throughout. The museum also has a bathroom that includes the WASHLET toilet, as well as other toilet-related innovations.

Before forming Toto members of the group did session work for various musicians. Boz Scaggs' album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich as well as guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather as well as drummers Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also played on records by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.

Discography

With a name like Asia one would expect the group to be prog queens and kings however, it's actually a pretty straight forward rock band. The group started out as a quartet and recorded two albums: 1979's self-titled debut album, and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a diverse musical background but their biggest success was in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a massive blockbuster but not without its difficulties. Record companies put the band on spot with the ultimatum "give us an album that is a success or we'll take you off the market" and the pressure was on them to give it. Luckily for Toto they delivered with the help of the smash hit single "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is due to their previous experience in the music industry, as the band members were session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts prior to forming the group. Their distinctive sound has become the norm for '80s pop, influencing many modern artists.

The album begins with a hefty dose of hard rock with songs like Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write fantastic AOR songs that slowly build their hooks into you. The album also has some more mellow, jazzy tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. And the album ends with Great Expectations, a song which combines folk and distortion AOR and could sound like a complete flop, but works wonderfully well.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes turned to the downside. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career and the band went through numerous drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the group due to drug charges. The band continued with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It wasn't as well-liked as IV. However, the band was able to release a chart-topping album in 1992, Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the conclusion of the original Toto lineup and was also the first to feature the new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet arrangement of previous albums. It was a more powerful, consistent effort that had a harder edge than Hydra. The more edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the growth of the band. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing ability to play was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard playing was also sharper, more complex and less akin to earlier efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live show in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album was released just a few months later and the group embarked on a long-distance tour in support of the album. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to discover songs that hadn't been recorded before. It was completed in 2001 and released as a double album titled Then and Now. It was the first album in the history of the band that did not include one single track with the word "A" in its title and it included one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and vocalist Williams was suffering from a severe case of laryngitis which limited his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia, met in England early in 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be reformed. The lineup, with the exception of Howe who was working with Yes during that period, was later renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band featured a special appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
