Always, always, ALWAYS get one with a flared base.
Butt plugs and anal vibrators don't have to be an intimidating thing at all, and they can in fact be super fun to play with either during masturbation or coupled sex. They're not just sex toys for men and people with penises, either. If you're a beginner, and aren't sure how to use anal sex toys butt plugs are a great place to start. Wearing a butt plug during any kind of sex act can enhance your pleasure and potential orgasms, thanks to the tons of nerve endings around the anus. You can get silicone butt plugs, vibrating butt plugs, glass anal plugs and plugs that are designed for prostate massage . They're also great if you're wanting to learn how to prepare for anal sex . Lovehoney sex expert Sammi Cole explains everything you need to know about butt plugs - from choosing the right one, to using it safely and pleasurably.
"Unlike the vagina, the anus does not produce its own lubricant, so liberal application of lube is a must for optimum comfort and safety," Sammi says. "For drawn-out anal play, regular lube top-ups are definitely a good idea."
Lube not only makes sex and play safer because it reduces the risk of injury, tearing and soreness, but it makes it feel way better too. Just make sure that if you're using a silicone butt plug, the lube you accompany it with is water-based. Silicone lube reacts badly with silicone toys, so always avoid using them together. Lube designed specifically for anal play tends to be thicker and longer-lasting, so you don't have to apply it so often.
This System Jo H20 Water-Based Anal Lube is affordable, smooth, long-lasting and compatible with all condoms and sex toys. It comes in a 60ml bottle so it's discreet and a great one for taking to a partner's house or on holiday (remember those?!)
If you're after something a little more luxury and have a bigger budget, Sliquid's Sassy Water-Based Anal Lubricant is one of the best anal lubes of all time. It's extra thick, vegan, hypoallergenic, non-toxic and flavourless/odourless. Sliquid uses plant cellulose as a thickening agent, instead of glycerin or other sugar derivatives that can cause yeast infections.
Like with any new sex stuff you're trying out, remember not to go in there all guns blazing. "Start gently and slowly," Sammi says. "It’s essential that you are relaxed to enjoy anal play."
Make sure you've spoken about your expectations and any concerns with your partner first, if you're trying a butt plug during partnered sex for the first time. If you're going it alone, take your time. Start with a small toy, and gradually get acquainted with it and more comfortable. Insert it slowly and just sit there with it inside and see how it feels. Once you become comfortable (and aroused) you can graduate to a larger or more advanced toy.
Regardless of your gender identity/sexuality, as long as you have a butt, butt plugs can be thoroughly enjoyable. "One of the greatest sex myths is that women and people with vaginas don’t enjoy anal sex, and that they only partake in a little bum fun to make their partner happy," Sammi says. "It's simply not true. Using a butt plug can make all kinds of sex feel more pleasurable for women." In the same way, it's not just gay, bisexual and queer men and penis-havers who use butt plugs. Using a butt plug as a straight, cisgender man doesn't have any bearing on your sexuality.
Sure, men and people with penises have their own little G-spot known as the P-spot (the prostate, more on that below) that can be stimulated through anal play and fingering . But it can still feel really good for everyone else too thanks to the nerve endings that live down there.
If you are using a butt plug with a penis-haver, listen up. "The prostate is an incredibly sensitive gland that feels especially satisfying when stroked, and it’s most easily located about two to three inches up on the anterior (front) wall of the anus," Sammi says. "It’s true that some men and people with penises can experience an orgasm and/or ejaculation just from having their prostate stimulated, although it does take practice and patience. These orgasms are said to feel more intense than an orgasm from stimulation of the penis, causing the whole body to throb with climactic energy."
"A butt plug creates more pressure on the back vaginal wall, increasing the level of sensation a person experiences," Sammi explains. "Many people with vaginas also enjoy using a butt plug while receiving oral sex. At climax, orgasmic contractions around a butt plug can feel more intense than without, and stimulate the nerve endings around the anus that usually get overlooked."
So, even if you are a woman or vagina-having person, there are various ways you can enjoy a butt plug.
If someone with a vagina wears a butt plug, their partner may also notice a difference in sensation if they're penetrating them. Sammi says, "By inserting a butt plug, the amount of space in the pelvis is reduced, and as a result the vagina feels tighter and more textured." So whether your partner has a penis, or is stimulating your vagina with their fingers , they'll probs notice you feel a little different.
When picking your first butt plug, it's best to go for a slimmer and simpler beginners butt plug and work your way up from there. The first rule of butt plugs, is ALWAYS make sure the toy you choose has a flared, or wider base . Unlike the vagina, the anus can 'suck' things up there. Toys with flared bases have no chance to get lost up in there. Beware, there are many anal toys available to buy that don't have these safety features and that aren't safe to use. So always, always, always look for a flared base.
This one is perfect for beginners as it's super small, cute and non-intimidating. It's slim, has 3 inches of insertable length and is made from flexible silicone - and it's super cheap!
This silicone butt plug is slightly larger, and has 5 inches of insertable length and is made of firm but flexible silicone so it's easy to insert and use.
If you're wanting a little bit (or shit tons, TBH) of vibration with your plug, Rocks Off's vibrating plug for beginners is a really good shout. Rocks Off is a company known for its well-manufactured, safe and affordable sex toys.
This plug is super slim, so not remotely intimidating or painful to use (anal play should never be painful, FYI). It's silicone, waterproof, and super smooth to the touch. Again, use with water-based lube only. It also has seven speed settings to work your way through.
This Desire Luxury Remote Vibrating Butt Plug is a great mid-range and affordable vibrating butt plug option. It has 4 inches of insertable length, is waterproof and has 8 patterns and pulses, with 12 levels of intensity.
Or if you're after something a little larger and more... intense, the b-Vibe Remote Control Rimming Butt Plug is a super powerful and techy toy. It's whisper-quiet and has a rotating bead in the neck so as well as vibrating, it mimics rimming . With 7 rotation and vibration patterns with 6, there are plenty of sensations to choose from and enjoy exploring.
Coming back to ye olde prostate yet again. There are specially shaped toys to maximise stimulation of the prostate, if that's who you're butt pluggin' with. Curved prostate massagers are perfectly shaped to put pressure on the perineum and prostate.
Perfect for beginners, the Ignite 20 Function Vibrating Prostate Massager is 3.5inches long (insertable length) and super powerful. It's also highly customisable, with 3 speeds and 17 patterns of "prostate-teasing vibration".
Mantric's remote control prostate vibrator targets vibes straight to the P-spot with its curved shaft and bulbous tip. The flared, textured base massages the perineum. And the insertable length is 4 inches so it's great for beginners and anyone looking for their next butt plug.
Sammi says, "Embarrassment over anal play is what keeps many from doing the proper research regarding butt plugs, and therefore getting into accidents. People using household objects often run into trouble as they are well shaped for insertion, but ill-shaped for retrieval. If it’s not made specifically for butt play, don’t put it in your butt."
Plus, remember sex toys need to be made from a non-porous material like silicone, glass or stone, because these can be thoroughly cleaned and won't cause infections/pass on STIs.

If you are looking to try anal but aren’t sure where to start, then butt plugs are a great option. But how to use a butt plug?
Butt plugs are ideal for first timers or people looking to move into bigger, more adventurous sizes. They allow you to practice on your own, and move at a comfortable pace.
This makes butt plugs a great tool for people who want to try anal fun but are a bit “tight” down there, and need a little practice to stretch out. Well, let’s get started.
Butt plugs are typically used as a beginner-friendly anal toy to help ease your way into anal play.
Most often, butt plugs are used for training and stretching out your anal sphincter muscle. This allows you to get used to the new feeling or new sizes.
Butt plugs can be used for short sessions, or even be left in for longer periods (of an hour or two). This is to help train your anal muscles to “loosen up”.
Butt plugs also come in a variety of materials, including metal, PVC, Glass and Silicone each providing a different feel and flexibility .
For most people starting out learning how to use a butt plug, I recommend using flexible materials like PVC or Silicone. This is because of their bendability, making them more comfortable to use.
These anal plugs are also commonly sold in sets, or “anal trainer kits”. These allow you to choose a manageable starting size and work your way up.
For anyone who is experimenting with anal for the first time, but plugs are a fantastic place to start.
Learning how to butt plug is pretty straightforward. But, before we get down and dirty, you want to be sure to get prepped and ready!
You want to make sure your butt plug is sized and shaped to be easy to use. For this guide, we will be using the 3-size beginner set that lets you practice at your own pace. As you get more comfortable, you can move up to larger butt plug sizes.
To start, simply use the bathroom naturally (Yes, poop). Afterward, take a shower and clean the anal entrance and about an inch inside with a finger. Use a mild soap to avoid skin irritation.
If you are still worried about hygiene you can also use an enema to really flush things out thoroughly. Repeat douching 2-3 times for a deeper clean.
Your body does not have a natural anal lubricant. So, you must, must, must use a lube with that butt plug! I recommend using a water based lube as it won’t degrade the toy’s material and is easiest to clean up.
You want your toy to go in and come out as smoothly as possible. So be sure to use lots and lots of lube! More lube equals more comfort.
For better application, you can also inject the lube inside before using the plug. This means that you will be slippery inside before you insert the butt plug.
You want to slowly insert one finger into your bum, and then position the tip of your plug at the entrance. You can do this by laying on your back, or sitting down on top of it directly.
The best way to describe this would be like you are going to poop. Try to expand and relax your sphincter muscles and allow the anal plug to move in easily.
Remember to take your time and don’t be afraid to use more lube if you need it. Your goal for each plug and to insert it all the way past the thickest point. You might need a few tries, but with patience and practice it should slide into place!
The longer you leave your butt plug in place, the better you anal muscles will adjust and relax. Learning how to use a butt plug comes down to let your body get used this new feeling.
Once your body has relaxed and adjusted to the butt plug, you can practice with a bigger size. With time and patience you should be able to use the biggest plug no problem!
After every session, you want to make sure to wash your toy thoroughly with soap and hot water to fight off any nasty smells, and bacteria which can be harmful to your health. A good toy cleaner can extend the life of your toy and take care of most of these issues.
And for those of you who don’t have the supplies already, you can get everything I just mentioned in the Anal Starter Kit .
It has everything you need to get started for the first time, including a 3 Piece Butt Plug Anal Trainer Set, Pjur Analyse Me Comfort Anal Lube, Two Lube Injectors, An Anal Enema, Toy Cleaner, and a Cock Ring Set of Two.
3 Piece Anal Plug Starter Kit 2 Cock Rings 2 Lube Injectors Pjur Analyse Me Lube 100ml Anal Enema Toy Cleaner 100ml
For most people, this is exactly what you need for anal play for the first time.
I know that I just threw you with a ton of new information. The most important thing when learning how to use a butt plug is to take things slowly and gradually work your way up.
Before you know it, you will be a butt plug pro (but you probably shouldn’t write that on your resume). As always, thanks for reading this week’s guide on how to use a butt plug.

Well done. Thank you for your help, i can’t wait to get started
Well written. I’m hard thinking about starting a butt plug for the first time
Hey, Loren,
You have given good advice and tips for beginners about using butt plugs, but there are a percentage of men (me included) who know the first time they try a butt plug that they just want to keep it in forever. While that’s unrealistic, I do want to share my experience (quickly) that it’s possible to go for many hours each day and all night long for years and never do harm to the anal opening, the rectum, or the prostate. But you have to have a sensible sized butt plug, one that will give you pleasure just wearing it while playing, shopping, sitting, and sleeping. And it might be counter-intuitive to think that glass or steel plugs are out if staying plugged is your goal. That’s not true. I wore a glass plug for four years, almost 24/7/365. The base and shaft are the secrets to comfortable butt plugs. The Devi glass plug (which I wear and recommend) is almost 5 inches in length, with 3.5 insertable length. The “egg” is the business end of the plug and it is 1.96 inches in diameter at its widest point; the shaft is .75 inches in diameter and a little over an inch long. This is seamlessly connected to a ring (a donut-shape) that will sit between the butt cheeks like a coin in a slot. The trouble with most plugs for really long-term wear is the bases. They will eventually irritate. The donut will not, because it does not fight with the butt cheek skin outside the anal opening. I quit plugging in early 2017 when I moved to the American South and indulged way too much on fried and fatty foods. Now that I’ve been here awhile, I decided to return to a diet that is helpful for long-term plugging, something to slow down digestion and firm the stool. I’ve started plugging again and I wear the plug all the time with time outs for BMs and cleanup.
This a great guide. Thank you. It saved me more pain! LOL
Its really interesting, keep sharing.
