Item upgrading allows players to improve their weapons and gear with new affixes that boost its stats base or giving additional benefits. To upgrade an item, the player needs to have it in their inventory and have access to the kiln.
Items that have weak bases, such as rings can be upgraded to more robust bases. Items with strong bases, such as Titans from eth, have no change in their stats.
Upgrade components
Upgrade components are items that can be slotted into trinkets, armor, weapons and gathering tools, providing an attribute bonus or additional effect while the equipment is in use. They can be purchased from vendors, found in loot, thrown away by enemies or received as rewards from missions or chests. Some upgrades have additional cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a certain level before you can upgrade.
To upgrade the quality of a weapon, armor or other item in the game, the player will need to select it and then click on the Upgrade button in the toolbar. This will show on the right-hand side of the screen a preview that shows the expected upgrade stats and the required component or materials.
There are three kinds that are universal upgrades (which include gems) prefix upgrades and suffix upgrade components. Universal upgrades, like gems, are able to be put on any type of equipment. They provide a smaller bonus than upgrade components that have a type restriction. Infusions are only placed in gear that is ascended and legendary equipment are similar to jewels but have higher bonuses and cannot be placed in any other type of equipment. Suffix item upgrade , which can be placed in gathering tools, will add their name to the end of the name of the item they are connected to, for example adding the word Glyph to a Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor will make it a Canthan Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor.
If an individual upgrades a gathering tool, and then replaces glyphs with another glyph the previous one will be returned to their inventory. If you replace any other upgrade component the item will be destroyed, with the exception for inscriptions, which can be swapped freely.
Leveling
The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important changes from earlier versions. Gear is now classified into tracks, and each item can be upgraded a certain number of times before it's "leveled out." The upgrade costs increase with each level, but the materials required do not. This allows players to focus their efforts on a few items and maximize the effect of these items, rather than spreading upgrade costs over multiple pieces.
This allows the item to receive new upgrade components, and have a greater chance of success. This bonus is known as the Artisan's Energy and it is reset to 0 on failure or increases when the upgrade succeeds.
Once a piece is upgraded to its maximum level, it will be able to receive an affix to increase its capabilities. The number of affixes that are available is contingent on the item's base. For instance an uncommon or unique weapon that has a standard base will only have two affixes, while a legend armor will have eight affixes.
Each upgrade will require the use of a certain amount of Flightstones and crests based on the item's current level and the item slot it's in. Typically, weapons require more Flightstones to upgrade than other kinds of equipment.
If an item is not able to reach its max level The NPC will offer the player the option of transfer it to a different person and then re-infuse the item with an upgrade set that is different. This process can take up to two hours, and costs the same amount of material. However, it has a lower rate of success.

Rerolling

For example the No-mouth Face will require 1.1K Scrap Materials, 250 Enchanted Dust and 5 Glowing Shards to upgrade. In general the jewelry and weapons have better trade value when fully upgraded than armor. Especially for weapons that have spell/weapon damage glyphs and are upgraded to gold is recommended as it will provide a significant increase in their power. This will also increase the defense value of armor with an updated appearance.
