I’ve hit that time in my life where it seems like I can put on weight in the blink of an eye and taking it off is almost impossible.
I can remember in my 20s and 30s not having to worry about what I ate or if I skipped the gym that day. But all of that has changed for me now.
There’s even a term for it — the mid-life spread. And, I absolutely hate it.
However, if you’re in the same boat as me, noticing those extra pounds packing on around your midsection but not quite sure how to stop it, there are two pieces of good news.
The first is that you’re not alone and the second, and even better news, is that a new study has revealed what you can do to help.
According to the study out of the Mayo Clinic, the average weight gain for women in their 50s and 60s is 1.5 pounds per year — much of that weight gain resides in the midsection.
That’s right, an extra 1.5 pounds right to your stomach, hips and thighs every year.
And even worse than the fact that it leaves your pants tight and your confidence low, is that this type of fat is linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, which is also the No. 1 cause of death for postmenopausal women.
To top it off, this extra weight around your midsection puts you at higher risk of diabetes, cholesterol and blood pressure problems.
So, why does this extra weight come on after a certain age?
According to the researchers, it’s a combination of mood changes, sleep disturbances, hormonal changes, hot flashes and the many other changes of menopause that can disrupt what may have previously been a healthy lifestyle.
This could explain why, with hormones and metabolism against them, postmenopausal women face some of the highest rates of obesity in the general populaton.
But with the deck stacked against you, what can you do to stop the dreaded mid-life spread?
Hormonal issues such as low thyroid levels can contribute to weight gain. Have your thyroid levels tested and support a healthy thyroid with supplements like iodine, selenium, copper and Ashwagandha root to improve thyroid function. One supplement I recommend that offers all four is Peak Thyroid Support ™ .
Avoid sugar, processed and packaged foods as well as alcohol that can make menopause symptoms and your weight gain worse. Instead choose high-fiber foods, and get plenty of fruits, vegetables, healthy fats and omega-3s, either from cold water fish or a high quality supplement, preferably from krill.
3. Exercise Physical activity is vital for managing menopausal symptoms as wells as staying fit. Get at least 150 to 175 minutes of physical activity (brisk walking or similar aerobic exercise) per week for weight loss.
The symptoms that come with menopause can leave you depressed, worn out and just plain unhealthy but there are natural ways you can improve your symptoms and feel better, like:
• Black Cohosh (80 milligrams once or twice daily) can help prevent menopausal symptoms including hot flashes and night sweats.
• Natural progesterone cream (about ¼ teaspoon or 20 milligrams applied to the skin and forearms twice or three times daily) is a natural way to reduce menopausal symptoms such as loss of bone density, vaginal dryness and fibroids.
• Maca Root (1,000–2,000 milligrams daily) can help reduce hot flashes, low energy/fatigue, restlessness and weight gain while improving libido and energy.
To control your weight, reduce stress and decrease your post-menopausal problems, aim for eight to nine hours of high quality sleep each night.
• Melatonin – Take 1 to 5 milligrams at least 30 minutes before bed.
• Magnesium – Take 200 to 400 milligrams before bed.
• Passion flower – Drink a cup of passion flower tea 30 minutes before bed.
• Valerian Root – Can be taken in tea or capsule form.
So, if you want to stop that mid-life weight gain and get back in shape, use the tips above to beat the challenges of menopause and feel young again. Now’s as good a time as any to resolve to make a change. New year… new you!

Sometimes a successful sports bet is more than just lucky. It may be the product of wrongdoing, both on the court and behind closed doors. Just ask federal prosecutors, who are accusing a former University of San Diego star player , another ex-player, an ex-assistant coach and others of conspiracy to commit sports bribery.
Time will tell if they beat the rap. For now, we do know how how sports players can cheat to help bettors beat the spread — and what “beat the spread” means.
It’s not clear exactly what the accused suspects are accused of doing, but a gambling expert says college basketball scams typically center around point-shaving schemes and focus on a team’s best player. Like, for example, the star who stands accused in this case.
Mayor Proposes Blackout on Brownouts
Mayor Jerry Sanders wants to get rid of brownouts that have idled fire engines in the city as a result of budget cuts, the U-T reports. Under his plan, the browned-out engines would be phased back into service. “I know times are still tough, but I’m glad to see that this particular chapter in our history has gone by, at least for now,” the fire chief told the paper. “It’s been a very difficult year for all of us.”
Numbers vs. Numbers in 401(k) Dispute
Local GOP types want to switch most city employees to 401(k) plans to save money. But how much will it save? The city’s pension CEO and a councilman differ .
The vice president of the city police union wrote this a few weeks ago: “840 police officers (about half of the sworn staff) left the San Diego Police Department when the city began changing benefits it relied upon to recruit and retain officers. More than 200 of them went to other agencies .” San Diego Fact Check finds that the claim is “mostly true” since there are nuances to consider. For one thing, the police department is holding onto its cop employees at a much higher rate than it used to since the economy soured.
Community Colleges Cancel Summer School
San Diego’s community colleges have eliminated summer school classes (with limited exceptions), officials announced over the weekend. North County’s community colleges are also cutting classes but to a much smaller extent , the NCT reports.
An Asian Enclave Grows in Northern S.D.
New census figures show that the number of Asian residents in several of San Diego’s northern communities have grown more than expected , giving weight to the argument that the neighborhoods — Mira Mesa, Rancho Peñasquitos and others — deserve their own City Council district.
The city is adding a ninth council district, and Asian activists have been pushing for one that represents them and their interests. Now, the northern neighborhoods with many Asian residents are split among three council districts. That contrasts to other council districts in the southern and central parts of the city that typically have black, Latino or gay City Council members in line with major political power blocs in those areas.
Platinum Equity, the owner of the U-T, has bought the Detroit Pistons professional basketball team while the U-T itself has purchased a website called discoversd.com , which focuses on entertainment.
The paper says it wants to reach a youthful audience. Unlike, say, its current audience, which editor Jeff Light said tends to be “adult, vested, community stakeholders.” That’s a nice way of saying hipness-deficient fossils.
Also in arts, Kelly Bennett has an update on the recent productions she’s seen in a post with a headline full of diversity: “Opera, Vibrators, Dance and Drum Solo.”
And over on another channel, CNN, there’s a story about the revitalization of Little Italy, which “has been picking up the slack where the city falls short for more than a decade.”
‘Man, My Old Boss Was Such a Pickle. No, Really!’
“Chief Popsicle.” “Chief executive pickle.” “Director of storytelling.” These are all real titles for executives around the country, MarketWatch reports, and a San Diego company has a few of its own. Arico Natural Foods Co. boasts a “communicator and public happy-maker,” “chief flavor maker” and “wicked witch of the Web.”
This reminds me how I’ve given a few imaginary titles to my supervisors in my time. (Not my current bosses, of course. They’re, uh, totally great. Ahem.) But since this is a family Morning Report, you’re just going to have to use your imagination about what they were.

Home Sports NFL Betting: Crucial Tips On How to Successfully Beat the Spread
Circleville resident for 5 years, born and raised in Maine. love buckeyes and Ohio
Anyone who tells you that sports betting is all about luck is almost certainly someone who enjoys casino action and mistakenly conflates the two.
While actions you take within a casino, online or in a brick and mortar establishment, are very much down to predictable factors entirely driven by statistical analysis, sports betting relies upon a lot more variables.
When it comes to how to bet against the spread in the NFL , you need to do some research before you place your bet. Novices often just place their bets without giving enough attention to what they are putting their money on, whereas a successful bettor has a strategy behind their picks.
The point spread is a system of handicapping that helps a bettor to make a bet on an outcome with the addition of some level of preference to one side over the other. In other words, it evens the playing field to make it more attractive to bet on an underdog and more worthwhile to back a big favorite.
Here’s an example related to a potential NFL clash
Jacksonville Jaguars +6.5 (-110) Tampa Bay Buccaneers -6.5 (-110)
In this example, the Jaguars are the underdogs, and in order to make a bet on them more palatable, they are given a 6.5 pt headstart, which basically means that as long as they stay within seven points of Tampa Bay, your bet wins. Conversely, a bet on Tampa requires them to win against the Jaguars by a decent margin.
Beating the spread, in this instance, means successfully predicting the right outcome and therefore earning yourself a decent payout. Here are some key ways to help you in this endeavor.
Stay On Top of the Latest Form and Injury News
There’s no point placing a bet on your chosen team if you haven’t taken into account their current form and, more importantly, who’s fit and who’s not. Be sure to check out reputable services that can keep you well informed.
Another great way to analyze the points spread is to see how it shifts over time. Noticing fluctuations in the spread will give you a good idea of how the wind is blowing. The changes in the spread are down to a number of factors, the key among them being the sportsbooks themselves doing their research.
You could choose to place your bet on the spread as the game is in motion. Betting ‘in-play’ has its pros and cons; one big negative is that you can find yourself losing money very quickly, but a big positive is that you are betting in real-time and can make more informed decisions due to this fact.
In closing, we’d suggest that any moves in the spread market should be well thought out and according to a sensible approach that is assisted by the use of reliable resources.
