Soil and Seed Landscaping

Measuring the amount of sod before starting on the sod installation services is highly advisable. It doesn’t matter if you are an experienced landscaper or an inexperienced homeowner.

In this blog, we will help you on how to accurately measure lawn before sod installation. So, follow these steps and save valuable time!

Step 1:

First, select a flat and clean area in your yard. Make sure the site is all clean and leveled.

Then, mark off some reference lines in the area. You can stretch a string between the stakes. Do this all along the width and length of the area.

Step 2:

Next, it is time to determine the quantity of sod you will need for the sod installation project. For that, you have to find out the surface area of the lawn.

You can easily do that with a tape measure or a “wheel”. Measure how much area you can cover with your number of pallets. Calculate the length and width of the area properly.

Now multiply the measurements to figure out how many square feet you have in the space.

Step 3:

Got the number? Now divide it by 9. This will give you an idea of the pallet quantity.

For instance, if you have 10,000 square feet of space, you will need 1111 pallets to cover up the area.

Step 4:

Now, calculate 6 inches from the top edge of the string lines (Step 1). Use a crayon to make reference marks at every 12 inches along the length of the space.

Step 5:

Put the pallets in a proper formation before the sod installation. Use a shovel to cut through the sides of the pallet.

Step 6:

Time to take pallets out of its stacks. Keep them all together with the bottom side facing down. Then, follow the reference marks on the string line and begin placing the pallets.

Step 7:

After laying out the pieces, use a rubber mallet to attach them together with pallet nails. Use at least two nails per connection. Then, cut down the sod along the edge of each pallet by using a sod cutter.

Step 8:

Next, dig out 6 inches deep and wide trenches along the edges of the pallets. Lift the corner pieces with a spade and attach them.

Step 9:

Now, cut the sod into 12 inches by 12-inch pieces along the reference lines. Reinstall them by laying them in the trenches. Then, pound 2-inch nails into each side to attach them to the ground.

Step 10:

Lastly, use a shovel to flatten down the soil. Then, water your yard and let it settle for about 7-10 days.

Now you can enjoy your lush lawn!
