How Sweden tried to abolish coffee

In the 18th century, a state panic broke out in Sweden: the authorities decided that coffee was a dangerous drink that destroyed society. King Gustav III was convinced that the drink was slowly killing the nation.

And then the absurdity begins.

To prove the harm of coffee, the king conducted a scientific experiment on humans. Two death row prisoners were commuted to life in prison for participating in the study.:

One had to drink coffee every day, the other had to drink tea, and the doctors watched who would die first.

The experiment was successful, but there was a caveat: both doctors died before the test subjects.

Then the king died.

The tea lover died first, at an advanced age. The coffee brother lived even longer.

The experiment accidentally proved the opposite: coffee does not kill. The government's campaign against the drink has quietly collapsed, and Sweden is now one of the most coffee—drinking countries in the world.
