It’s a multibillion-dollar industry, and while its top stars have the potential to rake in hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, many new performers could be paid as little as $390 per movie, The Sun reports.
And those behind the scenes aren’t paid nearly as well as their Hollywood counterparts, despite the industry’s multi-billion pound price tag.
That’s according to founder of LA Direct Models, Derek Hay, a man who represents many top adult performers and used to work as an actor himself.
He told The Independent a female actress could expect to earn $1300 for a scene with a man, and $895 for a scene with another woman.
This pay could go up or down by 10-20 per cent depending on who the actor is and whether they are well known, he added.
However, jobs in the porn industry are not as lucrative as people might expect, even for performers at the top of their game.
“I don’t think that adult stars make as much money as the general public perceives them to make,” Mr Hay said.
“I don’t think there’s anybody, even the biggest stars, who are making more than half a million a year. But if some of the top stars are making £240,000 to £320,000 [$390,000-$520,000] per year, by most people’s perception that would still be a lot of money I think.”
Mr Hay said it was a “universally known” fact that women are paid “a lot more” than men — but blokes get the opportunity to do more jobs. Actors also earn premium rates as an incentive to perform scenes they haven’t done before.
America’s CNBC did their own research — and delved into the earning of everyone involved in the making of adult movies, from those in front of the camera to the production assistant and the writers. Here’s what they found:
• Female actor in straight scene: $390 — $1950
• Female actor in scene with another woman: $910 — $1570
• Production assistant: $130 — $330

Can you make a lucrative living by having sex on screen?
Being a porn star might not be the kind of job you'd like to write home to your parents or your granny about, but it turns out it could actually be a pretty lucrative means of paying the bills - if you're into that kind of thing.
The Independent recently spoke to Derek Hay - former porn star and founder of LA Direct Models, which represents a number of the leading adult performers in the industry - to find out whether money in the bank is the real incentive for these professional sex-havers.
According to Derek, the money varies from porn star to porn star depending on their status, who their agent is and various other factors, but there is basic rate of pay to be expected. Female performers having sex with a male performer in a scene, for example, would usually earn approximately $1,000, which translates to around £800. This rate reduces in a female same-sex scenes, going down to about $700-800, or £550.
There are "premium rates", however, which could be anything between £1,600 to £5,000 per scene, which are paid out when the performer is asked to perform a sexual act they've not been filmed doing before.
"For the right girl, for whatever reason which could vary, to do acts like their first anal scene, first interracial scene, first scene with three, four or five guys, those scenes could pay premium rates," Derek explained to The Independent .
So how do the male salaries compare? Interestingly, porn is one of the only industries where female earnings are, on average, far higher than their male counterparts. Derek Hay says it's "universally known that women get paid a lot more" in porn, but he did note that men still get paid "what most people would think is a lot", and that they tend to work more frequently than women.
Overall, though, Derek notes that even the most famous of porn stars don't earn quite as much as many people might think they do.
"I don't think there's anybody, even the biggest stars, who are making more than half a million a year," he said. "But if some of the top stars are making $300,000-400,000 per year, by most people's perception that would still be a lot of money I think."
So I guess it just depends from person to person whether they think that kind of money is worth it for the daily requirements of the job...

22 Women Say They Were Exploited by Porn Producers
Their lawsuit, a rare look into an opaque industry, seeks $22 million in damages.

In a trial that began on Aug. 19 in San Diego Superior Court, nearly two dozen young women say that they responded to Craigslist ads seeking models and were then tricked into performing in internet pornography. “Wanted,” an ad would read: “beautiful college type preppy girls,” for video and photo shoots.
The ads turned out to be from producers behind a website called Girls Do Porn, who were seeking women to make so-called amateur porn, a style in which fresh-faced new actresses are often paired with seasoned male performers. The trial could last a month, but no matter its outcome it will provide a rare look into a part of the industry that remains shrouded in mystery — often intentionally, by its makers.
Respondents to the Craigslist ads said they were directed to innocuous websites , with pictures of clothed women, that asked for their contact information and photographs.
Instead of being offered modeling jobs, however, they were offered roughly $5,000 to make pornography, they said. But they did it, a number of them now say, based on the assurance, from the producers and their associates, that the videos would be distributed only on DVD outside of the United States and would never be published online.
The producers did publish the videos online, on Girls Do Porn, which specializes in amateur porn. The clips were also distributed to major sites, like Pornhub.
Shortly after the videos were posted, the women’s names and identifying information popped up on a site called PornWikileaks, which identifies people who have done porn.
Those are some of the allegations in a legal action brought by 22 women, identified as Jane Does, including a former law student who worked to organize the group. The women are seeking $22 million in damages from the people involved with making the videos. They also want their videos removed from the website.
The testimony of the women offers an unusual look at the specifics of how people are recruited to participate in so-called amateur pornography.
Mike Stabile, a spokesman for the Free Speech Coalition, a porn industry trade group, said his organization has received more reports of unscrupulous producers in the last decade that in years before. “With the changes in technology, you have a lot more fly-by-night companies,” Mr. Stabile said. They run shoots that he described as “unethical if not illegal.”
Reports that women who are recruited for the porn business face mistreatment have long accompanied the industry, but reliable data is scarce. Even prominent performers have told of being mistreated by producers, agents or fellow actors.
Mia Khalifa, a former porn performer whose videos have been viewed millions of times, recently reported that she was paid $12,000 in her three-month porn career, and warned young women not to enter the business.
The case consolidates three lawsuits and names three defendants and the l egal entities the defendants operate.
Those three are Michael J. Pratt, the chief executive of GirlsDoPorn.com; Andre Garcia, an actor; and Matthew Wolfe, a videographer. Their lawyers said they will show that the women signed contracts that said the videos they made could be “used anywhere, anyhow, for any purpose.”
The women also recorded videotaped statements to say they were not under the influence of drugs or mind-altering substances, and that they consented to the videos being used in any way, according to court documents.
“In our view, the women’s regret over their decision to make pornographic videos was and remains the primary motivation for this lawsuit,” Aaron Sadock, a lawyer representing the defendants, wrote in an email. Their complaint, he said, seems based on the idea that “young adult women are incapable of making their own decisions, good or bad, and consequently should not be bound by the contracts they signed.”
Lawyers for the women argue that it is part of Girls Do Porn’s business model to mislead women and coerce them into signing contracts. The women say they want their own videos removed and other women told how videos will be used in the future.
Brian Holm, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, said his clients, wanted to bring the case, “as a P.S.A. to the world, to put everyone on notice, that this was going on.”
Early in the trial, Amberlyn Clar k testified that she worked for Girls Do Porn as a reference for young women, a role that included misleading recruits. Ms. Clark said that she was paid to deceive prospective performers, and to assure them the videos would never be posted online.
Another woman in Ms. Clark’s role wrote a text message to a recruit that read: “I’m sure you’re nervous or maybe even sketched out a little bit but you seriously have nothing to worry about! It’s completely legit.”
She continued: “There is absolutely no way anyone will find out.”
And Jane Doe 15 testified on Monday that she understood there was a small chance the clips would appear on the internet, but her worries had been eased.
“I had been assured that after hundreds of videos that this had never happened,” she said.
The women who appeared in the videos say the producers bought them flights and booked rooms at upscale San Diego hotels. But once the women arrived, they said, they were told they couldn’t be paid the agreed-upon price . Promised $5,000, some were paid $400; others, $2,000.
Producers presented the women with documents to sign, the women said, and were told they could be sued for the cost of the flight and hotel room.
A few months after filming, the women said, the videos appeared on Girls Do Porn and other major porn sites. Shortly after, they claim the defendants posted the women’s legal names, hometowns, social media accounts and pictures online. The women said that producers also sent clips to their families and college classmates.
Lawyers for the producers denied this. “What Plaintiffs complain about are the actions of third parties — ‘internet trolls’ — who ferreted out the names of the women on the internet,” according to their filings.
“I had to drop out of college to avoid ongoing harassment from classmates,” a plaintiff, identified as Jane Doe 6, said in the lawsuit. “I have been harassed at work about the video to the point that I had to quit. I am now scared to apply for new jobs.”
The defendants’ lawyers also said the producers never agreed to limit distribution to a single buyer or DVD release.
“Logic dictates plaintiffs had no basis to expect the video would languish in a video store in Australia on an anachronistic DVD format,” lawyers for the producers wrote in their filings.

Globally, it’s a billion dollar industry and on average there’s more than 28,000 people watching porn on the internet every second.
But what kind of money really changes hands for sexual acts on film?
According to CNBC, who spoke to a number of adult entertainers about their pay packets, a popular star cashes in a six-figure salary.
But there’s also the cast and crew working just as hard behind the scenes, so here’s a breakdown of what everyone in the porn industry is earning.

Unlike in Hollywood, women actualy make more money in the porn industry than men.
While superstar performers who’ve become household names rake in millions a year, newbies can be looking at only a couple of hundred pounds per scene.
The key factors are the level of on-camera experience a girl has and the type of sex act involved.
"When the girls first get into the business and they're new, I think they can command additional money for different sex acts," said Steven Hirsch, owner of adult studio Vivid.
"Initially they make more money, then it depends on how popular they become."
If the actress is doing a “traditional” scene with a male star then she’s likely to pocket between £560 and £700 – depending on the production budget.
But top performers can earn as much as £1,050 or £1,400 for their efforts. On the flip side, newcomers with no reputation can be paid as little as £210.
Of course the more extreme the scene then the more money there is to be made from it. An adult actress could take home between £1,260 to £1,750 for their dirty work.

Generally lads get paid a fixed amount for the scene or for the day, meaning that there’s no pay difference depending on the sex act.
Some award-winning actors like Manuel Ferrara get top dollar, but most will be making much less.
Males are likely to trouser between £350 and £420 per scene or day depending on their agreement with the studio.
Better known stars can earn £490 to £630 while superstars would see a cheque of up to £1,050.
There’s much more that goes into a making a porno than just the performers having sex on camera. Most shoots last two to eight days and there’s a host of roles that you might not have thought about.
Directors are a lot more hands-on in this industry – sometimes juggling tasks such as location scouting, lighting and shooting as well – and that’s reflected in their pay.
A director of a feature-length film, not a short, is likely to earn around £700 or £1,050 each day with a few pros making upwards of £2,000.
Meanwhile a writer takes home much less, between £175 and £280 for a day’s work, and a cameraperson typically rakes in £500.
Make-up artists and still photographers – who snap shots for marketing purposes – are often paid £350 apiece.
