The majority of transportation tokens sold are used. Many transit systems have moved away from tokens, so they are no longer valid for travel. However, used transportation tokens still have value as collectibles.

Trade tokens are one of the most popular classes of tokens and exonumia. Their primary purpose was purely financial: to serve as a monetary substitute in locations where federally issued money may not always be available and to help stimulate trade for specific businesses. To be classed as a trade token it should be good for some specified amount, good, or service. Most such tokens are good for a certain monetary amount in trade, hence their popular nickname of “good fors.” Various forms of trade tokens date back at least to the seventeenth century when farthing tokens were used by British merchants when small change was in short supply. In America, some early colonial period pieces may be considered as trade tokens, but the heyday of trade tokens is generally considered from after the Civil War until around World War II.
After the Civil War concluded, existing cent-sized tokens continued to serve as a cent substitute until enough federal coins could satisfy the commercial needs of a healing nation. Beginning in the early 1870s , while the economy had recovered somewhat, many merchants found that tokens could continue to serve a valuable function as a coin substitute and provide return customers. Among the earliest adopters of trade tokens were saloons , bars , restaurants , and pool halls , soon to be joined by general stores, dry goods merchants , and even Indian traders . These types of tokens would form the bulk of trade tokens in use for much of the nineteenth century. Initially, mostly businesses in major cities had access to die sinkers from whom to order tokens. With the rapid expansion of the rail system through the Midwestern and Western states and the rise of mail order sales, merchants in more and more smaller towns could order tokens.
Tokens were issued in a vast array of denominations and in an equally endless variety of shapes, sizes, and materials, including brass , cupronickel , cardboard , hard rubber / vulcanite , celluloid , fiber , and (later) plastic . While there are debates as to the dividing lines between major token issuing periods after the Civil War, one scientific development can be argued as having a dramatic effect on token production. In 1889 the discovery of a process to extract aluminum from bauxite brought the metal’s cost down substantially. Previously, aluminum was extremely hard to extract and was even more expensive than gold. With aluminum’s cost brought down and its ease of use in industry, the expense of making tokens was similarly reduced. Beginning in the 1890's, aluminum trade tokens exploded onto the marketplace in a bewildering variety of denominations and shapes, and it is during this period that most trade tokens were made and circulated. Issued by a wide range of merchants, including general stores , canneries , hotels , restaurants and bars , and even military post exchanges and NCO clubs , tokens specified a redemption value such as “ Good for 5¢ in Merchandise ” or were good for a drink or other such goods. Many general stores used tokens as a means of extending credit to customers while guaranteeing return visits to their store. Merchant token use dropped off markedly during and after World War II. However, many stores in rural and coal mining communities continued to use them, where company store tokens were the predominant form of money, much to the chagrin of workers, who were often overcharged at the monopolistic company stores, ensuring a higher profit margin for the corporation.

Trade token collectors have several avenues to approach collecting, with most focusing on a specific state or region, or a subset of trade tokens, such as saloon, coal, or military tokens. Desirability is most often tied to rarity and the history behind the pieces; the fewer the known specimens, the more interesting the story, the smaller the community, the better. Western good for mirrors are generally more popular because of the romantic association with saloons from the Old West. Similarly, tokens from states when they were still territories – especially if the word or abbreviation for territory appears on the piece – are among the most popular, even more so if they come from a saloon or related to a gold rush . Tokens with town and merchant names typically are worth more than pieces with less information on them (called “mavericks”).
The prevalence of tokens in any given region seems to have depended on the success of the salesman from token manufacturing companies. Most tokens in larger towns were issued in quantities of around 1,000 specimens per denomination, and in smaller communities, mintages of fewer than 100 are not infrequent. Their intended audience was very small, and the tokens were rarely (if ever) expected to leave the communities in which they were issued. Many simply ended up in the trash after clearing out an old abandoned store or cleaning out an estate. This is a field in which new discoveries are frequently made.

There are countless different makers for all forms of exonumia, though the majority of extant examples are not necessarily marked. Many of the major makers have a wide variety of marks; some have just initials, while others will include the company's full name and even street addresses, which can greatly aid in dating specimens. When present,the marks will be along the bottom rim, usually in tiny letters that are sometimes unreadable without magnification. Some later pieces will use decorative monograms or company symbols instead, which can be located anywhere in the design. Larger pieces are sometimes marked on the edge.
There are a few general works about tokens that will help collectors approach the subject of exonumia. The Rulau catalog is still considered a standard one-book reference but should be considered a starting point. The Wright catalog is the first real treatment on the subject, and because it was written in 1898, it is still useful to this day in confirming nineteenth century tokens that have otherwise slipped through the cracks. Beyond that, there are numerous specialized catalogs, many of which are listed at TokenCatalog.com that will help gain a greater appreciation for the myriad avenues to collecting exonumia.
