Dolly Parton isn't shy when it comes to getting real about the cosmetic surgery she's undergone over the years.
"It is true that I look artificial, but I believe that I'm totally real," the 73-year-old country singer said in a recent interview with CBS Sunday Morning. "My look is really based on a country girl's idea of glam. I wasn't naturally pretty, so I make the most of anything I've got."
"I'm telling you, I'm not," she added, after CBS Sunday Morning co-host Tony Dokoupil protested. "You should have seen me this morning before I got ready to see you. I'm serious, though. I'm not a natural beauty, but I can enhance it. Whatever it takes, I do. I try to make the most of everything."
Parton is particular about her looks – she revealed a few months ago she sleeps with a full face of makeup in case of emergency – but she's also the first person to poke fun at herself. She told The Guardian in a 2011 interview that "if something is bagging, sagging or dragging, I'll tuck it, suck it or pluck it."
Before answering a series of rapid-fire questions asked to show off her self-deprecating humor, Parton said the tactic is partly because "you know what they're thinking, so you want to do it too, but I'm also funny."
So how long does it take to create that big, bouffant hairdo?
"I wouldn't know, I'm never there," Parton joked.
"They're real expensive," she said with a laugh. "They're real big."
And how does she want people to remember her 100 years from now?
"I want them to say, 'God, don't she look good for her age?'"
