Plus, find out how it's affecting our sex lives.
Let's begin with a few numbers: PornHub.com gets 60 million worldwide visits daily, and 24 percent of U.S. viewers are female. According to a 2015 study, 16 percent of women ages 18 to 39 view porn once a week, and the percentage who are willing to admit their habit to the Pew Research Center increased from 2 percent in 2010 to 8 percent in 2013. What's behind this uptick? To get the answers to this and other burning questions on X-rated flicks , we spoke with Gail Dines, Ph.D., anti-porn activist and professor of sociology and women's studies at Wheelock College; Megan Fleming, Ph.D., clinical psychologist and sex and relationship therapist in New York City; and Cindy Gallop, sex-tech entrepreneur and founder of MakeLoveNotPorn.com in New York City.
Check out parts of the heated discussion below.
Dines: We live in a "porn culture." Porn is the wallpaper of our society, and both sexes are internalizing the notion that it's normal and legitimate, so more women are watching it.
Fleming: In my practice, a lot of women are struggling with their libidos. They are overworked, exhausted, and having trouble relaxing. So porn is a tool in a toolbox that helps them keep their sexual pilot light on. It also helps them explore their fantasies and discover what they'd like to experience with their partners.
Gallop: There are way more women watching porn than what those statistics represent. Of course women like watching people have sex because we're sexual beings and we're wired to enjoy it! We want to watch it to get turned on and masturbate , just like men do. That's why I hate the terms "porn for women" and "feminist porn" because they imply that we're only into white sheets fluttering in the breeze and loving that's soft. Absolutely not true. I like my porn pretty hard-core.
Dines: But let's go to the empirical evidence and find out what happens when women look at porn. Specifically, [a new study] found that the more porn women watched, the more depressed and anxious they became, the less interested they were in having sex with people, and the more body-loathing they experienced*. Watching porn is not the issue—it's the effects of watching it.
Fleming: Well, having a doctorate, I value research, but I don't know of that particular paper. Yes, there can be some problematic behaviors that can lead to depression and anxiety. But what is making those women turn to porn? They may want to compare themselves, which of course isn't healthy. But I've also had clients who use it to discover their turn-ons. I think that's the reason lesbian and gay porn is some of the most viewed by women. There's this authenticity piece: There's no shame or guilt in expressing their sexuality or using their bodies. I think women are also looking to see a connection [between two people] to feel a sense of intimacy and pleasure.
Dines: But if you're looking for [that], why don't you seek it out in your own life? You're not going to experience intimacy, empathy, and connection by watching other people have sex.
Gallop: That's what we're trying to solve at MakeLove NotPorn. There is a total absence of an open conversation around sex in the real world. Because we as a society are so repressed about sex, we don't talk about it—or what we're watching. So porn exists in this shadowy underworld and therefore lacks socially acceptable curation. There is no Yelp for porn. And that's because it's not okay to come into the office, stand by the watercooler and ask, "I'm really bored with the porn I'm watching. Any suggestions?"
Fleming: In my opinion, anything that couples can use to promote a frank and honest convo is a great tool to enhance their bond. For instance, BDSM can be erotic for some women, but for others, it's a turn-off. Anal? Clear turn-on or turn-off. This is empowering women to have a voice in their own sex lives and to know their "No"—as in, "No, that act doesn't speak to me," or "Yes, I'd like to try that." There's a whole range of sexuality, and it's not black-or-white or all-or-nothing. We know in our bodies when something feels good or bad.
*At press time, this study was not yet published. Previous research has found that watching porn is linked to better sex for women in committed relationships.

Women watch more porn than men, and other steamy stats from a new Pornhub survey
Allow microphone access to enable voice search
According to a recent New York report on a decade worth of Pornhub data, women are actually watching more porn then men, in terms of how much time they spend on the site. Overall women spend 1:15 minutes longer per visit on the site than men do. And what are women watching? Well, it’s not what people seem to think women watch . The kind of porn you prefer is very personal, and often has to be just right to do the trick, sort of like how you like your coffee. Although there has been a recent trend in more “romantic” porn to cater towards women, who are thought to prefer more of a narrative to get off, the data shows that women are not into the romantic stuff.
T most popular search terms among women between 2014 and 2015 were all about men performing oral sex on women , large penises, and hard sex that included “screaming.” Not that those things can’t be romantic, but when you break it down into search terms, women seem to be into porn that gets straight to the point .
In the United States, women make up 25 percent of all of Pornhub’s traffic and 70 percent of comes from smartphones. The highest traffic in the U.S. for females comes from Mississippi, Georgia, and South Carolina.
Other popular porn search terms in the U.S.: “bondage” in Pennsylvania and Ohio; “ebony” in most of the South, Maryland, New Jersey, and New York; and “female friendly” in the Northeast. In California, women are searching for “huge” breasts and in Alaska, porn viewers are into “big” penises. Women are also searching for “lesbian scissoring” and “lesbian seducing straight girl,” too.
Women aged 25-34 are more likely to look for porn, and it’s most popular in the Dakotas and Nebraska, while in Hawaii, California, and Nevada, no one seems to search for it. So what are women looking for in pregnancy porn? “Get me pregnant,” “pregnant gangbang,” and “pregnant teen anal” are the keywords getting women off.
All of this is good news, since it means that women are taking the time to love themselves (the most popular times are between 3 -5 p.m. and after midnight, by the way) and checking out the kind of sex they want to see.

It's the most wonderful time of the year — not the holiday season, but "year in review" season. Pornhub just dropped their annual insights blog and according to them, 2019 was a "juicy year."
Thirty percent of Pornhub's U.S. visitors are women, which is a two percent increase from last year. According to their data, the most viewed categories between women and men vary, but really only in the order; most of the terms are the same:
Far and away the most viewed category for women is "lesbian," followed by "popular with women" and "Japanese." Conversely, the top category for men is "Japanese," while "amateur" and "mature" round out the top three.
Somewhat unsurprisingly, women viewed "pussy licking" videos over 200 percent more than men.
The pornstar that women searched for the most in 2019 was Lana Rhoades, who was the overall top searched as well. In second place was Jordi El Nino Polla, a male pornstar who was sixth on the overall list.
Four of the 10 pornstars women searched more than men are gay male pornstars, proving further that many women watch gay porn .
Rounding out Pornhub's data on women users is a fascinating state-by-state map of top searches. Interesting tidbits include women in frigid Alaska searching "party" more than any other state, and the women of Oklahoma getting their rocks off to tattooed women.
In terms of other insights, Pornhub seemed to have a banner year in 2019. The site saw a record amount of uploads with over 6.83 million new videos, which according to them means that if a viewer started watching new videos in 1850, they'd still be watching today — which is a slightly terrifying prospect.
Furthermore, the top three searches this year were "amateur," "alien" — harkening back to all the hoopla about Storm Area 51 — and "POV." You can see all of Pornhub's Year in Review here, and ruminate on all the NSFW content that the site will have in store for 2020.

Gone are the days when people hid their Playboy magazines under the mattress—we’ve now in a society where porn is the norm.
Back in the day, in order to access porn, you had to buy a magazine from a store or rent a tape from the adult section of a sketchy video store.
Now, the most hardcore images imaginable are only clicks away for anyone with access to the internet. No matter the consumer’s age or background, porn is more available, affordable, accessible, and anonymous than ever before. In other words, a lot of people are watching a lot more porn.
So how many people are on porn sites right now? How many people watch porn?
Well, according to global website traffic data from Statista, the top 3 porn sites in the world receive a combined 5.81 billion website visits per month. Statista. (2021). Most popular websites worldwide as of November 2021, by total visits. Accessed on 28 March, 2022. Retrieved from https://www.statista.com/statistics/1201880/most-visited-websites-worldwide/ COPY 1
That means there are about 134,491 new website visits per minute —just on those 3 websites. Plus, website traffic tools suggest that visitors to porn sites tend to spend about 18 minutes on the site each time they visit. Semrush Blog. (2021). Top 100: The Most Visited websites in the US—2021 Top websites edition. Accessed on 28 March, 2022. Retrieved from https://www.semrush.com/blog/most-visited-websites/ COPY 2
All in all, that means there are about 2.4 million people on the top 3 porn sites every minute .
It’s no secret that porn sites are getting a lot of traffic, but just how much porn—and what types of porn—are people watching? Here are just a few stats on the state of porn :
We don’t share these stats to scare anyone, we share to shine a light on the reality of popular and normalized it is.
Today, porn’s effects have permeated nearly every aspect of our lives.
Technology has changed not only the content of porn, but also how , when , and at what age people begin consuming it. Studies show that most young people are exposed to porn by age 13, British Board of Film Classification. (2020). Young people, pornography & age-verification. BBFC. Retrieved from https://www.bbfc.co.uk/about-classification/research COPY 14 and according to a nationally representative survey of U.S. teens, 84.4% of 14-18 year-old males and 57% of 14-18 year-old females have viewed pornography. Wright, P. J., Paul, B., & Herbenick, D. (2021). Preliminary insights from a U.S. probability sample on adolescents’ pornography exposure, media psychology, and sexual aggression. J.Health Commun., 1-8. doi:10.1080/10810730.2021.1887980 COPY 15 And for adults, an estimated 91.5% of men and 60.2% of women report that they’ve consumed porn in the past month. Solano, I., Eaton, N. R., & O'Leary, K. D. (2020). Pornography Consumption, Modality and Function in a Large Internet Sample. Journal of sex research, 57(1), 92–103. https://doi.org/10.1080/00224499.2018.1532488 COPY 16
In analytics released by popular porn site Pornhub a couple of years ago, women are 113% more likely to search the term “hardcore” than men. They are also over 105% more likely to seek out more intense genres of porn like “gangbang” and “rough sex.” ( Click here to read an article about why we think that is. )
Research and countless personal accounts have shown that exposure to pornography—especially on young, developing brains—has the potential to lead to unhealthy habits with toxic consequences.
Gone are the days when people hid their Playboy magazines under the mattress—we’re now in a society where porn is part of the cultural landscape. It’s clear how this shift in society harms consumers and relationships , so we are doing something about it. Speak up, and speak out that porn isn’t harmless or healthy.
