About Toto
The band Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also acclaimed studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs at the time) as well as bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The group's name was derived from the Latin word that translates to "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore every style of music.
In 1981 Toto's third album Turn Back was a flop, but they rebound with their fourth release Isolation with two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and their tour made them a household brand around the world.
After a short hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It is a departure from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and also includes some heavy rock. It was their first platinum album in North America.
In the course of recording the band's fifth album the band loses their manager and is put in financial difficulty. They decide to record a new album and change their name with an alternative producer. Lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much-needed boost.
The band released Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a major tour across the globe. After a few months in Europe they travel to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief break, Toto resumes recording and continues to record their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes an original cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band performing their hit song Africa on a recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
