Everyone knows porn is fake sex. (You knew, right? Right.) The performers really do ~ engage in penetrative coitus ~ and almost all the time the guy really does shoot a bunch of jizz everywhere. But basically everything else you see — the dialogue, the scenario, the amount of body hair, the way they look, etc. — is constructed by the people making the porno to represent want you want to see, not reality. And, most fake of all, the women pretend to orgasm .
Or is it? In this new video from Wood Rocket , porn stars reveal whether they ever actually climax while on set. It's... illuminating. Check it out:
Holy crap! If you're like me you were not expecting that many women to say yes. Of course some of the responses, like Charlotte Cross', Veruca James' and Lily Lane's, made it clear that orgasming every time wasn't exactly the lusty law of the land, as it were, but a ton of the women are pretty clear on the subject: If you're enjoying yourself, then why wouldn't you? And in some cases, why wouldn't you have multiple orgasms ? These are clearly women who deserve to have a job where they get paid to orgasm. More power to them.

Porn isn’t as polished as it looks on camera — especially the type of porn that goes out of its way to make its performers look dirty. However, a person has to be out of their mind to think everything they’re seeing on camera is exactly how it appears in real life. Despite what we fool ourselves into believing every time we marvel at the size of a performer’s goods or the number of decibels achieved from a screaming orgasm, the sex on camera is only half the story. From fake semen to the truth about squirting, we got a gaggle of porn star experts and hosts from Vivid Radio to talk to us about what happens behind the scenes — and how much of what we’re seeing is real.
“I haven't had too many strange experiences on set in this business, luckily. However, I had one not-so-fun day on set when I first started in adult [films]. I had been in the business for no more than two months, I picked up a job for a scene in a movie. As usual, I received the shoot details one day before my shoot. The odd thing was It didn't have the other talent I was suppose to work with on the call sheet. I didn't worry about it and still showed up the next day. I get to set the next day come to find out the scene was a threesome scene that included the director. Then the whole day I was smelling horrible B.O. on someone. Come to find out it was the director, who I was suppose to have sex with. While we were kissing in the scene I had the pleasure to taste her onion breath. The whole time we were shooting I was holding back gagging. I know they caught on camera my face of disgust. On top of everything else, it was a 10-hour day in a hot warehouse in the middle of summer. It was not the best day at work, but it sure made a great story.”
“When the guy couldn't get fully erect and they had to fake cum on my tits through a straw with condensed milk.”
“I think one of the biggest secrets or misconceptions about porn is that all the directors are men. I don't think most people realize just how many female porn directors there are. Women like to pull the strings just as much as men do.”
"Because there aren't many girls who actually squirt in porn, there's one company who will fill a girl up with water using a douche and attempt to create the idea that she's squirting using strategic hand gestures to make it appear "explosive" and with the use of camera tricks (e.g. Cutting away while filling her up then panning down back to the action). For the record, I was Squirt Queen of the Year in 2008, and I have never personally done this; only witnessed others doing it."
“One time I booked a studio — it was a fake gym. I figured it'd just be a room fitted out like a gym, normal basic stuff. Instead it was this huge room with some gym equipment in a corner. There were some sofas dotted around and I was going to sit down, until I noticed all the stains. Stains everywhere in this room. OK, so let's not sit down, let's just get our videos done and go. We start, and I'm looking up at one point out the window to see a an office block next door with a large group of people crowding round the window watching everything we were doing!
After that we just decided to keep filming to my own apartment. I prefer to film real sex than polished porn. We invited a super-famous porn star. She comes over and there's this guy with her that we weren't expecting. We were really confused as to who he was. It turned out he was her boyfriend. Funny thing is, he wanted to watch. But the guy I make videos with isn't really a porn star. He said he would be too nervous with someone watching. So her boyfriend just sat in another room listening while my friend had sex with her! He was watching some other porn she had done. Even stranger, that was the start of a bromance — six months later, those guys are flatmates!
One time I was doing a live show, it was pretty late. Maybe like 11 p.m.? There were about 1,000 people watching me live. The whole show is going really well, lots of laughs. We're talking about something, I think it was my grades, they were teasing me for getting a B in maths, and how my Asian mum must be disappointed in me for it. I was joking along with it, saying that we shouldn't speak about it or else she'll show up to tell me off. At that moment the doorbell rings, and I thought it was the pizza delivery guy. I took my laptop downstairs with me, because, for some reason getting pizza delivered during a live show is exciting! Only it wasn't the pizza man, it was my mum. At my house at 11 p.m. She'd been at a friend's dinner party in London and didn't want to drive home. I almost died!”

We asked professional sex performers two pressing questions: Do you fake it on camera? Do you fake it in real life? Their answers were surprising.
When does "faking it" serve us, and when does it hinder us? This week ELLE.com is exploring a wide variety of topics, including why we accumulate fake friendships, why we're so quick to judge a woman who surgically enhances her features, and why faking is essential to our careers, closets, and finding closure.
At this year's Sundance Film Festival, Rashida Jones, along with sex researcher Debby Herbenick, debuted Hot Girls Wanted , a documentary about young women working in the amateur porn industry. Following the screening, Jones made the following statement about porn to The Wrap: "Because it's performative, women are not feeling joy from it. It's fulfilling a male fantasy."
In light of that assessment—and our ongoing deep dive into the reason why women "fake it" in general —we talked to five women who have been working in the porn industry for many years as performers (and two who also direct) on whether that female money shot is ever real, and about faking orgasms in their personal sex lives:
"I personally try to make every orgasm real. I want the experience to be real for the viewer. How can I expect you to have a real experience if I'm not experiencing it myself? You do your best to make it as genuine or real as possible. Or at least, I do…The easiest way to tell if it's real is a flush. If the girl is not turning red, she's probably faking it. You can't control blood flow...Porn is a fantasy. A lot of the things we do on camera you should not attempt at home."— Jenna J. Ross, performer
"I want them to really come. I don't want them to fake it. I want them to go as hard as they need to go until they have an orgasm. For me, that's what I want to see in the final product, and I want my performers to have fun! If they're not having orgasms, then half the fun of their job is gone. Sometimes the chemistry wanes or it's an exhausting day. It's hard sometimes. In those cases, I'll tell them to forget about their own pleasure and give pleasure to the other person."— Kayla-Jane Danger, director (primarily directs girl-on-girl films)
"I would say the majority of the time it's fake. Because when you're filming it's sort of like, a watched pot never boils. It's a lot of pressure and it's difficult to focus on really enjoying it enough when you have to think about how your body's turned and where the camera's at. It's very difficult, at least for me, to have a real orgasm when I'm filming. It happens occasionally—and it always does take me by surprise." –Brooklyn Chase, performer
"I feel like I'm faking it more and more."
"Most of the time, to be honest, I fake it. For me to have an orgasm, it's more of an emotional thing and a connection thing. Sex is fun, and sex feels good, but as I get older and more experienced in the industry, I feel like I'm faking it more and more." – Nikki Delano, performer
"I have a tendency to overact my orgasms when they happen. If I'm left to my own devices, I'm fairly quiet, and that's really boring to watch. I overact in porn the same way I overact when I'm not in porn, when I'm with a partner. It's a form of communication. Not all the time, but it depends on the situation. I work for queer porn, so we have a different way we shoot. But it doesn't always happen, just like when you have sex with a lover…It feeds into a larger conversation about authenticity in porn, which I find really difficult, because of course it's not authentic. Well, it's authentic because we're real people having sex, and in that way it's real, but we're doing it in front of a camera." – Kitty Stryker, performer/director
"I have faked it a few times. If a guy is going down on me, sometimes as much as you're enjoying it, you just know it's not going to happen. You've got a lot on your mind, or it's not quite the way you like it, or whatever the case may be…With your voice you can guide them to where you want them to be. That's also the point of dirty talk. If you use the right tone of voice, it translates as dirty talk and you can tell him exactly what you want him to do, and guys like that." – B.C.
"Never have, never will. I'm also a squirter, so it's hard for me to fake. I could pee on the person, but that's gross. I'm an honest person, so if someone's not giving me what I need, I'll be like, 'Hey, wrong way.' Communication is really important." – J.J.R.
"My partner is also a porn performer, so he has a lot of confidence."
"I haven't had to currently. I have a partner who's very communicative, and I trust him more so it makes it easier to say, 'Actually, I need this type of stimulation.' I haven't always felt that comfortable, so sometimes I have faked it. My partner is also a porn performer, so he has a lot of confidence. So I don't really worry about that…If you fake an orgasm, you're hurting yourself or destroying your relationship. The reason women fake orgasms is because they don't feel like they can communicate to their partner what they want."– K.S.
"Yeah, if I have a one-night stand or something, and the connection isn't there. Sometimes I fake it so I can end it there and then. I don't really come easily, but I have to be in love with the person or connecting on a certain level." – N.D.
"I did have one partner for a long time who, unfortunately, when I was with him, I faked it pretty much every single time. I eventually just broke it to him that he hadn't been pleasing me for a long time and, even though I tried to give him instruction and tell him what to do, he either just didn't care or it was a maturity level situation. He wasn't as interested in my pleasure…[My advice would be to] spend the night in the no-judgment zone, drink some wine, and go back to the basics. Foreplay—just focus on that. Don't go right to the sex. That's probably a huge reason why you're not having an orgasm." – K.J.D.
