How Bud’s bunnies stopped him until it mattered; freakish Dons kid breaks out: The 3-2-1
How Bud’s bunnies stopped him until it mattered; freakish Dons kid breaks out: The 3-2-1Sydney has kept its unbeaten start to the 2021 season alive in thrilling fashion, holding off a valiant Essendon by three points at the SCG on Thursday night.
The Swans (4-0) were quite clearly the better side for most of the game, but kicked themselves out of a comfortable win.
In the first term, their misses handed the Bombers (1-3) an early lead which they extended as far as 25 points; in the fourth quarter, the hosts kicked 1.5 with one out-on-the-full, failing to put the game away.

That was until Lance Franklin’s third goal of the night, and 950th for his career, sealed the deal - though his old mate Cale Hooker got the Dons within a kick with 90 seconds left.
Sydney becomes just the fifth team since 2017 to win their first four games of the season; the other four all made preliminary finals or better.
QUARTER-BY-QUARTER MATCH REPORT
There were no late changes for either side, with James Bell (Sydney) and David Zaharakis (Essendon) the subs.
Jake Stringer, a week after kicking four goals in his return, gave the Bombers the opening major before Buddy kicked his first of the night.
Buddy then had a chance at his second of the night but missed, as did a number of his teammates, before a horror Sydney turnover in defence gifted Stringer his second goal.
A freakish bit of play from Bombers draftee Nik Cox, picking up the ball on the run and slotting it from 40 metres out on the opposite foot, then extended the visitors’ lead. They led 4.1 (25) to 2.5 (17) at quarter-time.
Essendon then got the first of the second term through Cale Hooker, and a brilliant piece of play from Darcy Parish - which may have been an accidental shot on goal - saw them leading by 25 points.
Making matters worse for Sydney, Isaac Heeney was subbed out with a broken hand.
It took Ollie Florent to end the run of six unanswered goals; at this point, while the scoreboard was all Essendon, a lot of that was because of the Swans missing set shots, not because of general play.
Sydney continued to play its daring style and it paid off, eventually hitting the front a few minutes before halftime through Buddy’s second goal of the night.
