Oklahoma quarterbacks have accounted for the last two Heisman Trophy winners, and Jalen Hurts hopes to take his first step toward becoming the third with a big performance against Houston on national TV. The Cougars enter the season with high hopes of their own, led by flashy QB D’Eriq King and offensive-minded head coach Dana Holgorsen.

Two high-powered offenses in a national TV game tends to draw lots of OVER money, and that’s what we’ve seen so far. As of Sunday night, the total had been bet up to 83 from an opener of 80.
Money on the side has been much more balanced, with Oklahoma moving slightly from a -24 opener to -24.5 at the majority of sportsbooks.
Don’t judge the Cougars’ potential this season by the way they finished 2018, losing four of their last five games — including a 70-14 beatdown at the hands of Army that may have been the last straw for former coach Major Applewhite. This Houston team is dangerous, evidenced by its 7-1 start last year before being undone by injuries and a leaky defense.
One of those injuries came to superstar quarterback D’Eriq King, who set a single-season AAC record for touchdowns (50) despite missing the Cougars’ last two games due to a knee injury. King’s healthy and expected back under center for this one, good news for a Houston offense that could be even more dangerous with former West Virginia head man Dana Holgorsen in charge. However, the Cougars have a huge defensive hole to fill following the departure of stud defensive tackle Ed Oliver to the NFL’s Buffalo Bills.
Hurts may not draw comparisons to Oklahoma’s Heisman Trophy-winning pivots, Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray. But don’t sleep on the Alabama transfer’s ability to put up a big season in Norman, either. Hurts enters the campaign with +1200 odds to win the Heisman, tied for the third-shortest odds on the board.
Yes, Hurts lost his starting job to Tua Tagovailoa last year, but he’s still a guy who went 26-2 as Bama’s starter — and now has a chip on his shoulder. He’s surrounded by plenty of weapons as well, led by the running back tandem of Kennedy Brooks and Trey Sermon.
A Sunday night visit to Oklahoma on national television is a huge opportunity for Houston’s program to get some attention, and I expect the Cougars to make the most of their opportunity. King and the Cougars should have little issue moving the ball against an Oklahoma defense that finished last in the Big 12 in yards and points allowed last year.
Whether they hang tough throughout or need a late touchdown for a backdoor cover, I’m loving the road dog here with Houston +24.5.
