Craig Robinson came up with the Michael Jackson joke used in the trailer, as well as the "It must be some kind of hot tub time machine" line that he deadpans directly into the camera.
When Adam is writing poetry in the room after the breakup, he is listening to "I Just Died In Your Arms tonight" by the Cutting Crew. This song wasn't released in the U.S. until the spring of 1987.
The end credits start out as one of the main characters' alternative histories, showing real crew names over a flashy 1980s music video.
The unrated version is longer by 1 minute and 40 seconds.

While the world was still recovering from the over-hyped Todd Phillips movie a smaller, quieter, but funnier movie slipped into cinemas and made a little splash. Both feature groups of troubled men looking for a good time, but Hot Tub Time Machine is just madder and more inventive. Three losers and a tagging-along nephew book into a ski lodge hoping to relive their youthful experiences. But when the lodge turns out to be a dilapidated wreck they resort to just getting wasted in the hot tub. Said device sends them back in time when the circuits are fried by one of those awful energy drinks. Arriving in 1986 (a year that presents us with several plot holes an anachronisms) they seize the opportunity to fix things for a better future (despite being warned not to) while Chevy Chase pops in and out as the hotel handyman who may or may not know the secret to time travel. It's very silly, very irreverent stuff, but it works. There's almost a sort of magical, otherworldly feel to the hotel and Chevy Chase's character, I wish it was taken a little bit further (maybe in the sequel), and lampooning of 80s culture is spot-on, even if it's hardly the first movie to do so. You won't stop smiling for the entire duration. Brainless or not, isn't that exactly what you want from a comedy?

Lou : Here's a question. Was it morally wrong for me to exploit my knowledge of the future for personal financial gain? Perhaps. Here's another question. Do I give a fuck?

Hot tubs: They’re must-have accessories for winter cabins, foils for sexy encounters on myriad reality shows and, as recent films tell us, occasionally time machines.
“Hot Tub Time Machine 2” comes out Friday, and even if the reviews are more tepid than a Jacuzzi left on standby mode, the premise is absurd enough to be entertaining: Friends get blackout drunk in a malfunctioning hot tub and wake up having traveled back in time. The sequel promises more temporal shenanigans.
But these are far from the first movies to use the bubbly tub as a plot device. Here are the best hot tub-based scenes in movie history:

You know that “Fight Club” fan theory about this 1986 John Hughes classic that says Ferris was just a figment of Cameron’s imagination the whole time, a la Tyler Durden? That means that in this scene, Cameron drowns in the pool, then jumps out of the hot tub he’s in with Sloane to save himself from said pool. It’s almost like some fan theories don’t really make sense.

Before this 1994 movie was ruined by an unnecessary prequel and a cringe-inducing sequel, Lloyd and Harry shared a too-small newlywed hot tub, shaped like a heart.

The 1995 film balanced the sexiness of Natasha Henstridge’s outsides with the horror of the alien creature she really was on the inside. A lot of men already get freaked out when women say, “I want to have a baby” — they get extra freaked if you have weird tentacles and creepy alien lizard skin.

The hot tub in this 1997 porn industry dramedy is pretty small by modern standards. But lots of people would probably clamor to get in that steamy man soup with John C. Reilly, Burt Reynolds and Mark Wahlberg.

Hot tubs and fart jokes go together like accents and Mike Myers. After Austin Powers lets one rip in this scene from the 1997 comedy, the joke goes:
Alotta Fagina: “How dare you break wind before me!”
Austin Powers: “I’m sorry. I didn’t realize it was your turn.”

This Aaron Sorkin-penned, Mike Nichols-directed 2007 film had some great acting. But the starring role in this scene goes to Tom Hanks’ naked butt.

We have to include this scene from the 2010 original as it has set the tone for hot tub antics in cinema — and probably inspired more than a few idiot bros to try to get drunk enough to re-create the time-travel effect themselves.
