At night when we watched TV they would be glancing at my sisters. Tracy would say, “Earl, the TV is over there, not here!” I did not see my sisters as hot, sexy or gorgeous. They were just my older sisters. I had one so called friend that asked me a few times if I ever snuck into their rooms to take a peek. I stopped being his friend. I was brought up to be a gentleman and respect people’s privacy including my older sisters.
My sisters, as I said were loving, caring and always there for me. They took me to movies, sports events, concerts. They helped me with my homework. We would sit up late at night and talk about UFOs, the fourth dimension, parallel universes, The Twilight Zone and stars. We were avid star watchers and would lay on our porch roof with dad’s binoculars and watch stars. I can still smell the leather if those binoculars. We would play board games into all hours if the night until mom caught us and sent us off the bed to carry on the game the next night. Those were the sisters I knew.
My sisters were the popular girls in school. They had been modelling since they were fifteen, they were in gymnastics and contemporary dance. They also took self defence. My dad wanted them to be able to look after themselves. Dad enrolled me in boxing. He said he wanted me to be able to look after myself and protect my sisters.
They were not immune to perverted teachers. One was purposely keeping my sister Lori’s marks down and one day told her if she would undress for him he would give her a pass. Lori was an A student. Something was wrong here. Without saying a word she walked out of his class, went home and told my mom and dad. Yes, she was in tears. After an investigation, this teacher was fired. It was also discovered he was keeping Lori’s twin Tracy’s marks down probably for the same reason
Another teacher was getting overly friendly with my sister Tracy, getting a little too close, touching arms and back asking her questions that had nothing to do with school. When she finally told him to keep his distance because he was making her uncomfortable he was genuinely surprised and said, “Tracy, I thought you and I had something special going.”
The twins never went out with guys from our school and I would get bombarded with questions from the guys in high school about the girls. Who were they going out with, who did they like etc. Modelling, they got to keep a lot of the clothes they modelled and wore the latest fashions in school and were trend setters. The other girls copied them.
I would always get girls coming up to me and asking me where my sisters shopped and where they got their hair done. I knew, but was under strict orders to say nothing to them so I would just shrug. There was also a lot of jealousy against my sisters.
When I would meet Lori and Tracy at their lockers at the end of the school day to get a ride home, there were always guys hanging around their lockers and notes taped to them. The girls would walk up, get their books out of the lockers, take the notes off, throw them in the garbage and without a look to the guys say, “Ready RJ? Let’s go.”
So throughout the school day it was a continuous bombardment of questions from people about my sisters.
I discovered the girls knew that it wasn’t easy in me. On the way to a baseball game, my sister Lori was stopped by a young cop who just wanted to talk to her and shine his flashlight down at her legs. I’ve never seen my sister angrier. I was 15 and she was 17. He made me late for my game and I was benched. I didn’t play. Lori watched the game without her brother playing. She took it personal. On the way home she was quiet, then pulled over and started crying. Here is an excerpt of the story I had written earlier.
‘Then she said, “I’m so sorry RJ, I really am.” I told her that it was okay, I’ll play next time.
“No, not that, I’m just sorry things like this always happen and involve you. At school, now here, I’m sorry.” I couldn’t figure out what she was apologizing for.
“I’m talking about this. Me making you late. I’m talking about school, guys always asking and bothering you about Tracy and I, sometimes you get into fights because of us. I’m just saying I’m sorry that you have to go through this crap because of us being your sisters. It’s not fair to you.” It dawned on me that my sister was apologizing for her looks.
When the girls finished high school and started college, I was in grade 10 and things settled down a lot. I wasn’t bothered half as much. I missed my sisters terribly.
If I forgot my lunch money my sisters were always there to help. I missed meeting them at their lockers and the funny stories they had when we drove home. I missed seeing and talking to them in the halls. I missed them but, life was a little easier.
They read my Quora answers and get a kick out of them. Sometimes they remember stories for me to write about.
Girls, I love you. It was a little tough having ‘hot’ sisters in school but there are no other sisters I would rather have. Best sisters ever.
