"Super Freaky Girl" debuted at the top of the Billboard Hot 100, giving Nicki Minaj her first Hot 100 No. 1 as an unaccompanied artist.
Nicki Minaj had a lot to celebrate on Monday (Aug. 22) as her infectious new single “Super Freaky Girl” skyrocketed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, giving the rapper her first Hot 100 No. 1 as an unaccompanied artist and her third overall.
Upon hearing the exciting news, Minaj took to social media to thank her fans, affectionately called the Barbz. “You did it barbz. You did it. I love you so much. like so so SO much. Thank you,” she captioned a screenshot of her accomplishment.
“You did it,” she simply wrote on Twitter along with a teary-eyed emoji.
Minaj’s “Super Freaky Girl,” which samples Rick James ’ 1981 hit “Super Freak,” is the first No. 1 debut for a hip-hop song by a solo female and no accompanying acts since Lauryn Hill ’s “Doo Wop (That Thing)” in 1998. Minaj’s latest No. 1 hit follows her previous chart toppers “Trollz,” with 6ix9ine , and her featured turn on Doja Cat ’s “Say So,” both in 2020.
“Super Freaky Girl” arrived on August 12 amid its rising popularity on TikTok and accompanying dance challenge created by user @lorddroman.
“I can lick it, I can ride it while you slippin’ and slidin’ / I can do all ’em little tricks, and keep the d— up inside it / You can smack it, you can grip it, you can go down and kiss it / And every time he leave me ‘lone, he always tell me he miss it,” Minaj raps in the raunchy opening verse, over the instantly-recognizable riff from the throwback sample.
“Super Freaky Girl,” released on Young Money/Cash Money/Republic Records, tallied 21.1 million streams, 4.6 million radio airplay audience impressions and 89,000 downloads sold in its first week (Aug. 12-18), according to Luminate.

Nicki Minaj’s new single “Super Freaky Girl” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on Monday, earning the groundbreaking rapper the third top hit of her career—and her first as a solo performer.

The song was released on August 12, and is Minaj’s first solo song to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, which tracks sales, streaming and radio airplay data.
Minaj’s previous number-one hits were “Say So” with Doja Cat in May 2020 and “Trollz” with 6ix9ine in June 2020.
“Super Freaky Girl” followed Beyoncé’s “Break My Soul” and Lizzo’s “About Damn Time” in the Billboard Hot 100’s top spot, marking the first time since 2014 and 2015 the No. 1 spot was consecutively acquired by three solo female artists.
It’s the first No. 1 debut for a hip-hop song by a solo female artist since Lauryn Hill’s 1998 song “Doo Wop (That Thing).”
“Super Freaky Girl” is the fifth song to debut at No. 1 this year so far.
Anticipation for the release of “Super Freaky Girl,” which samples Rick James’ 1981 hit “Super Freak,” built for weeks after Minaj released a teaser clip of the song’s chorus on TikTok. Over 252,000 videos have been made to the tune since July. Minaj will receive the prestigious Video Vanguard Award, a career honor, at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday.

Though she's reached the peak position with other artists like Doja Cat ("Say So") and controversial rapper 6ix9ine ("Trollz"), Minaj's latest feat marks the first time in the 39-year-old's 13-year career that she has climbed to the chart's summit on her own.
Billboard also reported that "Super Freaky Girl" is the first hip-hop song by a solo woman with no accompanying acts to debut at No. 1 on the Hot 100 since Lauryn Hill 's "Doo Wop (That Thing)" did so in 1998.

"You did it," Minaj tweeted Monday, shortly after it was revealed that the song also had the biggest pure sales week for any song released in 2022, with 89,000 units sold.
The song has been hailed as a pseudo sequel to Minaj's 2014 smash "Anaconda," and includes a prominent sample of Rick James' 1981 song "Super Freak."

After premiering "Super Freaky Girl," Minaj also released a slightly altered "Roman Remix" version of the song that includes the return of her fan-favorite alter-ego Roman Zolanski.
In addition to her chart success, Minaj is set to host Sunday's 2022 MTV VMAs with LL Cool J and Jack Harlow. Elsewhere at the VMAs, she will accept this year's Video Vanguard Award and perform a medley of hits spanning her career. "Super Freaky Girl" is also nominated for Song of the Summer at the awards ceremony.
Though the single charted high upon its release, Minaj has also received criticism online for working on the tune with writer-producer Dr. Luke, the famed songsmith who was sued by pop star Kesha for alleged sexual assault and abuse in a lawsuit that was later dropped .
