Like many conservative religious sects, the Orthodox Jewish community prizes modesty, especially among its women - which is why it's so surprising that more and more of these women are willing to strip down on camera.
The New York Post reports that boudoir shoots - a trend that sees women taking sexy, revealing photos, often in nighties and lingerie - are becoming increasingly popular among Orthodox Jews, with even some bubbes - or grandmothers - taking part.
Lea, 30, a New York City-based photographer who is also an Orthodox Jew, said that these types of shoots done for members of Flatbush, Brooklyn's Hasidic community now make up about 35 per cent of her business.
Makin' them schvitz: Lea (not pictured) is an Orthodox Jewish photographer from New York who said that boudoir shoots among the Hasidic community now make up about 35 per cent of her business
Modest ladies: Most Orthodox Jewish women cover their legs, arms, and even hair - using a wig called a sheitel or a hat
It takes a lot of chutzpah to show your tuches - or behind - on camera, but it's especially a stretch for Orthodox Jews. The women typically cover up from head to toe, wearing ankle-length skirts and long-sleeve tops.
A married woman also wears a sheitel, a wig that covers her real hair and is meant to indicate that she is off the market.
But Lea, a mother of four, said that these $1,000 shoots are actually a useful tool for promoting happy marriages, and most of her clients are hitched.
'Women who have had children sometimes feel that their bodies are limited to child-rearing, making them feel less attractive,' she told Daily Mail Online via email. 'I want to keep the spark alive in their marriages and in their personal self esteem by highlighting their unique beauty.'
Takingn it off: Many of Lea's clients are mothers and grandmothers who want to celebrate their bodies
Others, she said, may be struggling to conceive - which can feel like a major blow in religious communities where expanding one's family is a top priority.
'Some women who are still waiting for the miracle of children see their bodies as having failed them,' Lea went on. 'So I want to remind them of their attractiveness and help them to celebrate their beauty.'
Malky a 47-year-old Orthodox Jewish grandma from Brooklyn who chose not to share her last name, was inspired to do her own boudoir shoot to surprise her husband for his birthday.
She wore a sheer white shirt and platform stilettos, posing for Lea in black-and-white.
'I don’t care what religion you are - if you don’t keep your husband excited, someone else will,' Malky told the Post. 'It’s not against Halakha [Jewish law] to keep your husband satisfied.'
By the book: Manhattan rabbi Elie Weinstock said that while it's kosher to take pictures like these - because passion is important in a marriage - they should be kept between husband and wife
All ages: Lea charges about $1,000 per session and said her boudoir shoots are popular with clients in their 20s to 50s
And was he ever. Malky said that when she gave her husband the pictures, he looked at each one several times.
'His reaction was, "Wow, I can’t believe this is my wife,"' she added. 'Husbands aren’t used to seeing their wives in a sexual way like that.'
While sharing those photos with anyone but one's husband is questionable, one Manhattan rabbi admitted that exchanging them within the confines of marriage is just fine.
'Judaism recognizes that passion is important in marriage,' Elie Weinstock, a rabbi at Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun on the Upper East Side, told the Post. '[But] Judaism believes in modesty. I think this is "kosher", but I don’t think it needs to be front-page news. It’s between a husband and wife.'
Lea insisted that she makes an effort to respect her clients' privacy and to work within their level of comfort.
Ooh-la-la: She explained that some women want to be reminded that their bodies do more than make babies
'In observant Judaism, as well as other religious communities, intimacy is kept extremely private because it is treasured and sacred,' she told Daily Mail Online. 'I maintain the utmost respect and privacy for each of my clients so they feel comfortable and modest according to their personal preferences.'
She also offers food plans for women who want to be in their best shape for the big shoot, and will even supply lingerie if they don't have any of their own.
And while Lea noted that the husbands often get to see the pictures she takes, the photo shoots aren't actually always for them. These women are mostly doing taking the smoldering shots for themselves, celebrating their femininity 'in their own unique ways'.
