"Wet Hot American Summer" recalls the final days at summer camp, 1981: the hikes, the water sports, the sex, the drinking and the talent show! A very rowdy comedy, with Paul Rudd, Molly Shannon, Amy Poehler.

“Wet Hot American Summer” seems to enjoy a cult status and enjoys many fans to judge from reading the reviews here. I have fond memories of the 80’s and with this all-star ensemble cast this film should have had me laughing non-stop but it barely generated a chuckle or two.

How you can manage to squander talent like Paul Rudd, David Hyde Pierce, Amy Poehler, and Bradley Cooper (to name just a few) is beyond me. The writing for this satire spoofing the summer camp experience is astonishingly lame and the jokes fall flat way more than they hit the mark. Comparisons to a classic like “Meatballs” are giving “WHAS” far too much credit, they wish!

It’s the end of the summer and the kids are packing up to go home but there are still a bunch of wacky events to wrap up the season. We’re treated to a sad talent show, a capture the flag contest that turns into a riot, abandoned river rafters, and the very timely but unlikely peril of the Skylab space station crashing into the camp rec hall. Janeane Garofalo plays the camp director who is barely in control of the deviant, sex obsessed counselors at Camp Firewood. The editing is choppy as we cut from goofy scene to dopey scene keeping up with the large number of characters all doing idiotic and unfunny things, after awhile it’s all a tiresome blur. Every stereotype is pretty much covered from stoner dudes and slutty babes and everyone else in between- nothing particularly original or creative to be seen. Honestly, this mess wouldn’t even have made a good SNL sketch.

The Blu-Ray disc has a wealth of bonus features including a 10th Anniversary Event where the filmmakers and cast share a self-indulgent celebration of this turkey and a “Live at SF Sketchfest” event where cast and “special guests” re-enact selected scenes from the live radio play- have your fast-forward button ready. I would rate HWAS one notch higher than “Hot Tub Time Machine” and that’s not saying much.

There is no one to single out as standing out as far as the performances go, everyone is terrific.

Although it's one of the funniest comedies of the last 20 years, WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER is best for older teens and adults due to the frequency of profanity, sexual references, and raunchy humor. This in no way diminishes the brilliance of this parody of early 1980s teenager coming-of-age movies, and, in fact, if this movie lacked profanity, sexual references, and raunchy humor, it wouldn't be much of a parody of those types of movies.

The awareness of the form is pitch-perfect, as is the fearlessness in turning the form on its ear -- such as when the camp has a marriage ceremony for two gay male characters and celebrates their love, instead of what would have transpired in the less tolerant movies of the early 1980s. Everyone from Paul Rudd to Christopher Meloni, Janeane Garofalo to Michael Showalter, and Michael Ian Black turns in incredibly hilarious performances. Wet Hot American Summer belongs in the rarest of comedy movies that you can watch literally dozens of times and always find something new to laugh at. Just watch it once the kids are in bed.

A classic of American cinema. This film is definitely not for everyone (or for most people), but if you get on its wavelength, then there's nothing funnier. Watching these comedy stars play characters at least a decade younger than they are, saying dialogue that is often making fun of twelve different things at once, all while the movie alternates between embracing and mocking the 80s camp film... It's just all too much. I love this film more than anything. Not the best special features, though.

Michael Showalter and David Wain are comic geniuses and shine bright in their writing for this amazing movie.

Two of the young guys get married down by the lake officiated by a few women.. after they have a couple love scenes in the equipment room. Rated R for Gay themes, a drug sequence. Recommended.

Any one who loves rock and roll needs to see this film!!!
I love this movie. I saw it again on television a couple of years ago and tried to get my kids to sit down and watch it. I thought that the movie would give them a better appreciation of the music they take for granted and enjoy today if they could see what some people went through and the risks they took so that rock and roll could survive.
Alan Freed: This is Alan Freed... and this is Rock and Roll.
