In the quiet, misty swamps of Horry County, South Carolina, locals have whispered for generations about a mysterious creature known as the Horry County Howler. Some say it’s a lost beast from another time, others believe it’s the vengeful spirit of a long-dead trapper—but one thing is certain: when the Howler cries, trouble follows.

The Tale Begins

It was the summer of 1987 when a group of teenagers from Conway decided to camp near the Waccamaw River. They’d heard the stories, of course—old fishermen claiming their nets had been torn apart by something massive lurking in the water, hunters swearing they’d seen glowing eyes watching them from the trees. But like all bold young folks, they laughed it off.

That was their first mistake.

As the fire crackled and the night grew still, an unnatural silence fell over the woods. No crickets, no frogs—just the slow, creeping sound of something moving through the reeds. Then came the Howl—a sound so deep and guttural it shook the ground beneath them. The teens bolted, leaving their gear behind, but when they returned the next morning, their campsite was destroyed. Tents shredded, coolers smashed—even the metal lanterns were bent like they’d been crushed in a giant fist.

The Truth Behind the Howler

Old Man Jenkins, a lifelong resident of Socastee, claimed to know the truth. Back in the 1920s, a bootlegger named Elias Haggerty had been running moonshine through the swamps when the law finally caught up to him. Rather than face prison, he fled into the marshes, cursing the county with his dying breath. Some say the Howler is his spirit, still raging against the world. Others believe it’s something far older—a beast that’s always been here, waiting in the blackwater.

The Howler’s Last Appearance

In 2015, a group of kayakers near Bucksport reported seeing a massive, shadowy figure moving beneath their boats. One swore he saw a hulking, fur-covered creature with glowing amber eyes slip beneath the water without a ripple. That same week, a farmer near Aynor found his livestock pens torn apart, with tracks too large to belong to any known animal.

To this day, folks in Horry County lock their doors a little tighter when the fog rolls in. Because when the Howler cries… something’s hunting.
