Horror parody movies or also known as horror movie spoofs are one of the more exciting mixes of genres. These are Rotten Tomatoes' best rated.
Horror parody movies or also known as horror movie spoofs are one of the more exciting mixes of genres wherein scary situations directors like to sprinkle some good old comedy. The combination of the two genres dates to the time of Edgar Allan Poe where he added humor and horror in the mix. There is also the famous saying by Robert Bach, "opposite sides of the same coin" which can serve as the perfect explanation of the two segments.
In the past twenty years, there have been some incredible horror parodies to many all-time classic horror movies such as the Scary Movie franchise, Young Frankenstein, and many more.
Fido is a Canadian horror parody based on an original story by Dennis Heaton. The movie was directed by the British director Andrew Currie and released by Lions Gate Entertainment in 2007. The plot of the movie tells the story of a young boy named Timmy and his life in a small town in the '50s. Everything seems perfectly normal except for Timmy's dog Fido who is an actual zombie. The movie culminates when Fido's collar breaks down and he murders one of Timmy's neighbors. The accident causes a zombie apocalypse.
The 3D parody Piranha was released in 2010 by Dimension Films as a remake of the 1978 horror Piranha. The director Alexandre Aja wanted to portray the movie from a more vivid angle so he decided to shoot it in 3D. For the viewers, it was an incredible theater experience where they were able to almost feel the earthquake breaking and the mythical piranas swirling in the lake. As the cast was fighting for their lives, the audience had chills from the real-life piranas swimming all around them.
Killer Klowns from Outer Space is all in one, it has comedy but at the same time, it is a horror movie complemented with details of the science fiction genre. The movie is a parody of every movie that starts with a meteor crash where aliens come to Earth.
As per usual, this happens near the tiniest town in the middle of nowhere and the people who make the discovery are not taken seriously by the authorities until the last moment when it is too late. In the movie instead of the standard alien look, the producers decided to have them appear as clowns.
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon was directed by Scott Glosserman and released in 2006. This movie was made as a documentary but by adding a parody to it it became a mockumentary. The movie tells the story of Leslie Vernon (Nathan Baesel) who has an alarming obsession with everything that has to do with movie-style slashers. This includes mentioning fictional characters such as Freddy Krueger and Michael Myers, as well as their movies A Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween. Vernon goes to the extent of hiring a crew while he performs his scenes.
Tucker and Dale vs Evil is a horror parody of basically every horror movie that includes a villain with a saw and a questionable cabin in the woods. The movie begins when Tucker (Alan Tudyk) and Dale (Tyler Labine) decide to blow off some steam and go to the mountains where they own a cabin. Coincidentally there is a group of teenagers who freak out thinking that the guys are some kind of horror movie chainsaw killers. The lack of communication drives both parties to a constant misunderstanding which is both painful and hilarious to watch.
The Comedy of Terrors has the best fitting name for a movie that has segments of both comedy and horror. The movie begins by telling the story of a drunk named Waldo Trumbull (Vincent Price) and his failed attempt to support himself and his drinking problem by working as a part-time contract killer part-time owner of a funeral parlor.
Waldo even hires an assistant in order to be more efficient in his job. The entire situation starts to get complicated when they attempt to murder the wrong person.
One of the most legendary movies made in the late 1940s is the horror parody Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. Chick (Bud Abbott) and Wilbur (Lou Costello) are two baggage clerks who work at Florida train station, they receive a phone call from Lawrence Talbot (Lon Chaney Jr.) who warns them about a dangerous parcel that is supposed to arrive at the wax museum. The clerks think that it is all a prank and don't pay as much attention to the whole situation until it is too late. They face the Wolf Man, Dracula , and Frankenstein at the same time.
The Return of the Living Dead is one more horror parody that covers one of the all-time favorite topics about zombies. In the movie, Frank (James Karen) creates chaos when he fails to perform an experiment to demonstrate to his new employee Freddy (Thom Mathews) how their top-secret unit works. Instead, they create a type of gas that brings corpses to life which creates another zombie apocalypse.
Young Frankenstein is a typical parody of classic horror and it successfully tells the story of how Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) lives a miserable life where nobody in his family respects him.
As soon as he finds out that his grandfather has left him the glorious castle he moves to his chambers only to find a mysterious book that contains all of his grandfather's experiments. Frankenstein immediately begins following the book and he tries to successfully complete all of the experiments.
What We Do In The Shadows is yet another brilliant mockumentary that was released in 2014 and directed by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. The storyline is hilarious as vampires live together in a small apartment in Wellington, New Zealand, and are desperately trying to lead a normal life. It is interesting for the audience to see how vampires with supernatural powers try to blend into modern society.
