Headcanon that the Lupins tried their best not to curse a lot when Remus was growing up, but inevitably swore during very stressful days, like full moon. And young Remus, as a way to express his pain, is told, “you are allowed to swear if it gets to be too much, okay?” And Remus hears, “you can swear on this day.”
Cut to when he comes down in the morning and says, “I feel like shit,” and his mother drops her cup like, “Excuse me?” and Remus just goes, “Today’s my swear day. You said!”
Lyall and Hope had been seeing each other almost two years when Lyall made up his mind. He wanted to marry Hope, he wanted her to be his forever. However, it wasn’t as easy as just declaring his love and proposing her in marriage. Lyall was a Wizard and Hope was a Muggle and therefor he had to apply to break the statute of secrecy.
This is what brought him into an elevator early on a Wednesday morning hurtling down to the bottom floor of The Ministry of Magic.
He thought briefly about the irony of the Muggle Marriage office being at the bottom, it wasn’t something people thought proudly on, Wizard marrying a Muggle. However, if you could pass all tests and provide all the proper paper work it was usually granted.
Lyall stepped off the elevator and proceeded to the older wizard at the desk.
“Name of you and name of impending spouse?” he drawled not even looking up.
“Erm - Lyall Lupin and Hope Howell.” he said quickly as a quill took it down before shoving the paper into his hands.
“Go, sit, fill out pages one through twenty-four and then return it to me”
Lyall groaned as he slumped into a chair. Twenty four pages, and this is just step one. He thought as he started answering mundane questions.
Lyall went back to the desk forms, copies of identification for both of them and a recent picture of Hope in hand. He was directed into the next room. Here he had to immerse himself fully into a tub of water. This water would wash away any enchantments to prove that this person was marrying a muggle out of true want and that they are who they say they are.
Lyall stepped into the tub his shoes making a loud clunk as they reached the bottom of the large tub. He sat down, held his breath and laid all the way back, he counted to ten as instructed and he felt the water become warm and tingly before cooling off again. He stepped out, pointed his wand at his hair and slowly trailed it down his body drying himself quickly.
Lyall headed back to the desk where he had to repeat verbally around half of the information on his forms. Including properly identifying his wife based on the picture he handed in previously.
Lastly, he had to endure the test he least looked forward to. The man took him into a room opposite the tub room and sat him in a chair. He passed him a small vial of clear serum.
“Drink up” the old man said with a cock eyed grin.
It took a few minutes until Lyall felt it. However going down it tasted sour, then burned and it made him feel nauseous and light headed, he gripped the arms of the chair and blinked rapidly, shaking his head to clear the fog.
“What is your name” the man asked.
“To gain permission to marry Hope Howell”
“Because she loves me, and who wouldn’t love her, she is so sweet, kind hearted, her accent makes me smile, her eyes make me lost, she is the best kind of person.”
After many more questions and many truthful answers Lyall Lupin left the office with permission to marry the woman of his dreams, but first she had to accept that he was a Wizard.

Hope had a job in an insurance office in Cardiff by the late 1950s.[2]
One day, she decided to take a walk through a dense forest, and stumbled upon a Boggart, which took the form of a very large and vicious-looking man. Lyall Lupin, a wizard, heard her frightened scream and rushed to her aid, turning the Boggart into a field mushroom with a wave of his wand. He escorted her home afterward to ensure her safety.[2]
A few months later, Lyall confessed to Hope that the Boggart had never posed any real danger to her, but this did not diminish her fondness of him — the pair had fallen in love with each other by this point. When Lyall proposed marriage, Hope accepted, and eagerly dedicated herself to planning their nuptials. The wedding took place in early 1959, the cake featuring a Boggart-shaped topper, a whimsical touch on Hope's part. A year later, on 10 March, 1960, Hope and Lyall's first and only child, Remus John Lupin, was born.[2]
In early 1965, Fenrir Greyback attacked the Lupins' house, having been insulted by Lyall at the Ministry of Magic sometime prior. Her son was bitten and turned into a werewolf, and despite her husband's many attempts to revert the transformation, there was no cure. Thus, they moved from village to village, moving when their neighbours began to take notice of their son's strange behaviour.[2]
Along with her husband, Hope worried that her son would not be able to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, due to his lycanthropy, but Albus Dumbledore made a special provision for him.[4]
During his years at Hogwarts, her son would say Hope was ill and he had to go and visit her, as an excuse for his monthly disappearances which were actually caused by lycanthropy.[4] In spite of Remus's elaborate lies, his friends, James Potter, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew guessed the truth in their second year.[2] However, as Hope had already died by the defeat of Lord Voldemort in 1981,[2] there may have been some truth to Remus's words of her being "ill".
She was noted to be a particularly imaginative and sensitive person. Her decision to crown her wedding cake with a Boggart-shaped topper would seem to indicate that she had a whimsical, offbeat sense of humour, and her steadfast support of her son after he was bitten by a werewolf demonstrated resilience and tolerance.[2]
Hope was described as very beautiful in her youth. In her middle age, she grew thin with worry and fear as her son's lycanthropy negatively affected his health and future as well as her and her husband's safety.[2] She might have had light brown hair like her son.
↑ In accordance with the Age of Marriage Act 1929, Hope had to be at least sixteen with parental consent to marry in 1959. The latest she could be born was 1943 if she did. If she didn't have consent, she was at least twenty-one years old.
