Something to know if you are planning to vacation at a resort: all resorts are advertised as being in Punta Cana. They will advise you not to leave the resort unless on a tour that they provide. In some areas they are correct in that there is nothing outside the particular resort to walk to. If you want to be able to leave the resort on your own to shop or just walk around without renting a car, it is best to stay in the Bavaro area. There are shopping malls, town plazas with various shops and bodegas, restaurants on the beach, beach and water sports, movie theaters, hospitals, cool bars and fun nightlife. If you want to be able to leave the resort on your own to shop or just walk around without renting a car, it is best to stay in the Bavaro area, particularly the Los Corales or El Cortecito neighborhoods. Public transportation is available as well as taxies and car rentals for you to explore at your leisure.
Located on the eastern tip of Dominican Republic beginning from the most northern point to southern are Uvero Alto, Macao, Arena Gorda, Bavaro, Cabeza de Toro, Punta Cana and Cap Cana.
Accommodations: Mainly all-inclusive resorts
Beaches: Beautiful bronze-colored beaches with areas of calm water as well as large waves. Uncrowded. Open to the public.
Shopping: There is a small shopping plaza nearby the resort which you need a car or bus to transport you.  Other shopping is within the resorts.
Transportation: To and from the airport via taxi or bus
Accommodations: Macao is a small rural village with a famous, virginal, magnificent beach but has no accommodations.  It is very close to the all-inclusive resorts in Uvero Alto and Arena Gorda. It is a must-see destination for all who live or visit Punta Cana and should not be missed.
Beaches: El Macao has been declared by UNESCO as one of the best in the Caribbean for its fine sand and abundant palm trees, this stunning beach is virtual eye candy!
Shopping: Locals bring their artisanal products to the beach for tourists to buy.
Accommodations: Mainly all-inclusive resorts
Beaches: A Blue Flag beach, Playa Arena Gorda is one of the Dominican Republic’s widest beaches with a sloping landscape and calm water.

Transportation: Many people who vacation in Bavaro have no need for a car as they can walk to the beach and restaurants. There is public transportation via the bus or “Gua-Gua” as it is called! Motor concho (motor scooter taxi) is also very popular.

Beaches: Blue Flag beaches with calm, crystal turquoise water offering decent beach snorkeling. Some public access next to the Catalonia Royal Bavaro Resort. Not a beach to go to unless you are at an all-inclusive hotel.
