Hong Kong—A fierce fire ripped through the upper floors of a downtown skyscraper in the Central district Friday evening, sending a plume of black smoke over the harbor and the city’s skyline. The blaze, described by authorities as a devastating incendie, spread rapidly through the high-rise’s upper offices and mechanical levels.

Fire crews from the Hong Kong Fire Services Department fought the flames from multiple fronts, deploying dozens of engines, portable monitors, and aerial ladders. Authorities said more than 200 firefighters were on scene, along with police and paramedics. Access to surrounding streets was sealed off as smoke drifted down to street level and residents were advised to stay indoors.

Residents and workers on lower floors were evacuated, while others in nearby buildings waited in designated safe zones as the fire continued to burn for several hours. The tower’s upper levels appeared to be most severely affected, with windows shattered and visible flames through glass façades. Local businesses in the block reported temporary closures as customers and commuters were redirected.

Officials said there were no confirmed fatalities as of late evening, though a number of people sought medical treatment for smoke inhalation and minor injuries. Investigators planned to inspect the structure as soon as conditions allowed and will look into possible causes, including electrical faults, equipment malfunctions, or other factors common in high-rise fires.

The incident forced road closures and disrupted several bus and tram routes in the area, with authorities urging residents to avoid the vicinity while crews continued to douse hot spots and secure the scene. Rescue teams remained on site through the night, focusing on preventing reignition and ensuring that surrounding buildings remained stable.
