Their reasoning was that by having sex with a priest or other “symbol” related to a particular god, that one formed a direct connection with that god, as sex was seen as a sort of spiritual “portal” of sorts. Most of the major religions today, however, have discarded such practices by the end of the middle ages, at which point the main mode of the expression of homosexuality took on more the idea of intimate relationships analogous to heterosexual relationships.
Whats even more interesting is that we do not see the anti-homosexual interpretations of the Christian scriptures that most Christians espouse today until around the second to third centuries A.D. at the earliest.
