You probably own all of them, anyway.
If the phrase "homemade sex toy" makes you immediately imagine a trip to the ER, you might be surprised to hear they're not necessarily as questionable as you'd expect...if you choose wisely.
DIY toys for sex and masturbation can be a great option if you're just beginning to (literally) play with your sex life—solo or with a partner. They're a low-cost, convenient way to experiment with what you like in a sex toy in terms of length, girth, texture, and more. Or, maybe you've exhausted your drawer (or closet, or room) of sex toys and want to try something new. Plus, some options are even disposable, making cleanup a breeze.
If you're hesitant to try something mechanical, man-made, or explicitly created for sex play, going the DIY route may make you feel more comfortable, according to sexuality and relationship consultant Dr. Sara Nasserzadeh , PhD. "Homemade sex toys featuring everyday objects are accessible," she says. "Plus, they can bring lightness and laughter to the dynamic, which is priceless." Just imagine never looking at a wooden spoon or cucumber without getting turned on again.
That being said, it can be difficult to know where to begin when you want to branch out from traditional sex toys . It's important to not just grab any old household object for bedroom play. Luckily, your search for the perfect bedroom accessory (that you probably already own!) ends here. These 27 homemade sex toys are all expert-approved—so you know they're both fun and safe to use.
Unless they're crotchless, you have to take off your nylons to have sex, so why not involve them in the fun instead of tossing them on the floor?
If you have consent from your partner, use these to tie their wrists and ankles, or to blindfold them while giving them a lap dance or grazing parts of your body on their lips, says psychologist and sex therapist Rachel Needle , PsyD.
"Remember, all other senses are heightened when sight is deprived, so blinding them with something silky or sexy to the touch is ideal," she says.
"Get a clean PVC pipe with the circumference and length that fits his penis," Laino says. "Lube the inside and have him penetrate it." That gives an all new meaning to the word hardware, eh?
"Underwear can easily be used as a gag," Matatas says. "Just be sure to fold the underwear from its corners into the center, so that if it unfolds, the bulk of the material will fold out of the mouth instead of back into the throat."
Sex and pleasure educator Luna Matatas recommends pressure point massage rollers. This one could easily be used in solo play to rub along your clit, nipples, or bum.
Chokers are super versatile in the bedroom, Morgan explains. Of course, they're a good option for people interested in collaring.
But even if that's not your style, Morgan says that just the act of putting a choker on can be exciting because it signals "'if you give me permission to collar you, now we're in active play, and you're going to take the submissive role.'"
"Some men will use a sock filled with lotion or lube and masturbate away," says Debra Laino , a sexologist as well as couples and marriage therapist. And, there’s no reason you can’t do that for them or have them do it next to you while you watch and stimulate yourself with your own toy of choice.
"Both partners using their own sex toys to mutually masturbate can add some diversity and spice to a couple's sex life," Laino says.
Sure, you can attempt to hold an ice cube in your mouth while delivering oral sex, or even swish ice-cold water in your mouth beforehand, but the thing about ice is that...it melts.
Instead, create that same effect by swishing your mouth with mouthwash before giving oral, says sex educator Laura McGuire. "It’s going to give off that tingling sensation that a lot of people really, really love," she explains.
But if you don't mind a little mess, ice is a great way to try out temperature play, says Tyomi Morgan , a certified sexologist and pleasure coach. "You can put it on any part of the body, any of your erogenous zones," she says.
She suggests using an ice cube to make trails on your body or your partner's body and then using your breath to emphasize that cool feeling.
This ice cube tray makes large squares that won't melt right away, so you can keep the party going all night long.
If you want to take your blow job game to a new level, this tool—er, jewel—is for you, says Laino.
"Slowly wrap it around your partner's penis and jerk them off," she suggests. Added pleasure bonus: Kiss and suck on the tip while you’re at it.
"The texture of the pearls gives the penis a very different and unique sensation," Laino says.
A wooden spoon is perfect for spanking because you can go soft or hard, depending on your partner’s preference, Laino says. Just make sure to have an open conversation about your sexual boundaries beforehand.
For another effect, Morgan suggests a silicone spatula. "It creates a different sensation," she says. The stinging effect and lighter impact, she adds, just can't compare to plain old wood.
Rubbing against a stack of pillows can stimulate the clitoris and serve as a stand-in for a partner, says Needle.
Pillows can also be great co-masturbation tools, says McGuire, who encourages everyone to think outside of the penetrative sex box. "People forget that a lot of pleasure can be derived with just friction," she says. Noted!
Don't want to mess with your expensive pillows? Needle also recommends using towels. The texture can feel great and the material is versatile enough to use it in any number of ways.
Things heating up too quickly? Use a fan to cool off, or use the rotating blades as another form of texture play, Morgan explains. Just make sure your fan has softer blades, like this pocket-sized one.
Morgan also recommends using a fan to cool off the part of the body that you're focusing on. "That way, some of the redness goes down," she explains. It's a win-win.
If swishing mouthwash pre-oral isn't as convenient as you'd like it to be, McGuire also recommends popping some mints before giving oral. It'll give the same tingling sensation without having to run to the bathroom mid-foreplay.
Want to get dirty while getting clean? Easy. Just use your shower head as a vibrator by pressing it up against, or directly spraying, your clitoris, Needle says.
"Many [shower heads] can be used at varying pressures and spray settings, so each individual can experiment with what feels best," she says.
If you like the feeling of exfoliating your face or back, you might enjoy a similar sensation on your inner thighs, between your butt cheeks, on your outer labia, or against your breasts, says sex educator Kim Airs.
"A scrubbie sponge can be used gently or firmly, depending on what feels good for the user," she says. Penis-owners may like it too, she adds, on their scrotum or shaft.
If it feels too rough, try adding a (scented, if you like) dollop of massage oil , says Airs. Just be sure to use a clean one that hasn't been used on dirty dishes or toilets.
Think twice before throwing that empty paper towel roll in your recycling bin. Morgan says it's actually a ready-made toy: just stretch an inside-out textured condom over one end and push the rest inside. Add a rubber band or two for security and maybe some lubrication, and you're done.
Whether you're using this one by yourself or with a partner, Morgan says it's sure to be a hit. And later, "you can literally just roll it up and throw it in the trash," she adds.
"Chopsticks can be squeezed together with a small rubber band at the ends to create easy-to-use nipple clamps or to squeeze the outer labia together," Airs says. Just make sure to stay away from traditional bamboo chopsticks to avoid uncomfortable and painful splinters.
You likely have several of these around your home already, but it's never a bad idea to stock up—and now, you have another reason to.
"If you want a quick, pinching sensation, a snap of a rubber band will certainly make one jump to attention," Airs says. Again, be sure your partner is cool with feeling a sting and potentially sporting a bite-mark-looking impression temporarily after.
Is there anything coconut oil can’t do? If you get one that's organic and free of all preservatives and other chemicals, it works great as an inexpensive lube, says sexuality educator Jane Fleishman , PhD.
"Just remember you can't use any oil or oil-based lube with a latex condom because the oil will break down the integrity of the latex," she says.
A cucumber is a great option for internal stimulation, says Morgan. And, you can totally add a barrier if you want to (textured condom, anyone?), but you don't need to.
A peeled cucumber was actually used as a vaginal cleanser in ancient times, Morgan notes. So, rest easy (and consider freezing it. Just saying).
Fresh out of cucumbers? Try a carrot instead, recommends Morgan. Put your refrigerator's crisper drawer to work!
If you want to get creative, your favorite head scarf can work as a gag or way to tie up your partner with their consent, says ob-gyn and sex educator Dr. Terri Vanderlinde, MD.
"How you choose to use them all comes down to being present, mindful, and making sure each partner is committed to pleasure—their own and their partner's," she says.
Vanderlinde also recommends using that favorite silk shirt of yours. Next time you're taking it off while getting hot and heavy, wrap it around your partner's neck to pull them closer to you or use it to tie them up.
Bonus: Your partner will get turned on every time they see you wearing this out in public, too.
"One side is smooth and can be used for light spanks on the bum, while the other side is prickly, which will feel intense on an already spanked bum if dragged over it lightly," says Matatas.
"Or, it can be used on the back, inner thighs, or chest by dragging the hair brush in long strokes, adding pressure and checking in with your partner about what they like."
As a soft barrier between bodies and surfaces, "microfiber blankets are amazing," Morgan says. "Depending on what part of the body is being stimulated, you can rub against that and create comfortable texture."
"Pop some non-sharp stainless steel silverware in the fridge, and bring them out for an icy delight against your partner's skin," Matatas says. "Cold butter knives can give an intense sensation without risking breaking the skin."
Like the idea of getting all lubed up—but don't want the mess? Put some coconut oil or olive oil in a sandwich bag, and use it to stimulate your partner, or watch them use it to take care of himself, says sexuality counselor Eric Garrison.
Just be sure that if you ultimately decide to ditch the bag mid-stroke and go for penetrative sex, you’ll need to use a non-latex condom so that it doesn’t disintegrate in the oil you’ve used as lube.
Scent is another way to set the mood, Morgan says. After all, your bedroom is where you sleep every single night. "Transform it into a space that allows you to really sink into the sexual experience versus feeling like, 'Oh, alright, it's time to go to sleep now,'" she says.
This rose mist is light and floral (plus, it has over 1,700 five-star reviews).
"Face rollers can be used gently and sensually on small areas of the body that don't normally get attention, like the bac
