Fans of homemade sex toys say creating something unique adds to the pleasure of using it
Forget macrame planters, it’s time to turn your hand (and possibly even your potter’s wheel) to sex toys. Craft workshops allow you to add a personalised touch to your dildo, which DIY fans say adds to the pleasure of using it. From stitch-your-own penis portraits to handcuffs woven like friendship bracelets, here's how you too can get that warm and fuzzy feeling of knowing something’s homemade.
The UK’s crafting trend has been filling our homes with artisanal goods for years. Between 2010 and 2016 the total value of craft exports grew by 24.5%, from £3.7 million ($4.6 million) to £4.6 million ($5.6 million), making up 1.5% of the total value of UK exports of goods in 2016. According to the Crafts Council , the craft economy generates nearly £3.4 billion for the UK economy and is one of the fastest growing areas within Britain’s creative industries.
A 2019 survey by British online sex toy store Lovehoney found that 63% of women and 54% of men across the UK, US and Australia now use sex toys. It was only a matter of time, then, before these two worlds collided. And now here we are: channeling our passions and combining our interests in the form of DIY dildos.
That’s not to suggest that highstreets and malls are going to be inundated with Build-A-Buttplug workshops any time soon. Rather than responding to a huge demand, most crafters have turned their hand to sex toys out of personal interest.
Ceramicist Adele Brydges runs monthly porcelain dildo-decorating workshops out of her studio in London’s Hackney Wick. She was inspired to start crafting her own sex toys after becoming disillusioned by the “basic” market which she says she found aesthetically lacking.
“Pleasure products are functional but the design and materiality are overlooked,” she says. “There is a time and place for a glittery lilac silicone disco dick, but I felt there was an element of shame associated with sex toys. I made it my mission to address this. I see my sex toys as sensual tools and functional art objects that celebrate sexuality and introduce a sense of ritual into self-pleasure.”
She studied ceramic design at the UK’s prestigious Central St. Martin’s art college where she fell in love with the tactile nature of the material. While most mass-produced sex toys these days tend to be made of easy-to-sterilize silicone, Brydges says porcelain actually lends itself very well to the purpose.
“Many people think using [ceramics] for a dildo is a new thing, but it’s not at all. There are ceramics dildos that date back 100 years and more,” she says. “Porcelain, in particular, is a great material for pleasure products. It’s natural and very pure. It's also hypoallergenic, non-porous and doesn't degrade over time.”

Each of her marbled creations is unique. The casting process means no two surface patterns are the same. She sells what she calls “sensual tools”—namely, dildos and butt plugs—in her online shop . Prices start at £165 ($200).
For those who want to make their own, workshops cost £120 ($145) per person which includes materials, prosecco, snacks, subsequent kiln-firing and shipping of your finished dildo. Brydges started offering classes two years ago, and spaces are limited to six people per session. She says the overall response has been positive. People come to her specifically because they want to create something personal and meaningful.
“People are beginning to understand the importance of sexual wellness, self-pleasure and self-care,” Brydges says. “Crafting their own pleasure tools is part of this process for some people.”

Meanwhile, at London Loom , for £30 ($36) you can learn to embroider a picture of your own genitals. Their event description reads: “What better way to say ‘I love you’ in the mirror, to your own reflection, than by embroidering what you see in front of you! This class is about love — loving yourself, loving your bits, loving your mate’s bits, or even your partner's.”
The “BDSM Toys Craft Corner” group on kink and fetish social media site FetLife has over 50,000 members. In a pinned discussion thread entitled “Why DIY?” members muse on the joys of homemade sex toys. While many say they were already crafty and saw no reason not to bring those skills and interests into the bedroom, others talk about the satisfaction of creating something unique and personal that is then used to give or receive pleasure.
Professional crafters say they have been pleasantly surprised by the level of customer interest in DIY sex toys. When sex bloggers Andrew and Pixie (who go by their first names only) founded KinkCraft , they wanted to create craft workshops that were a bit different but still friendly and non-intimidating. They came up with the idea of making BDSM accessories out of paracord.
“We wanted something anyone could have a go at,” Andrew says. “And we wanted them to walk away not only with something they have made, but something they could play with as well. We looked for a material that would be recognizable and accessible. Paracord is easily available, fun to work with, and comes in great colors.”
He adds: “It has always been an amazingly popular at every event we have been to. Not just with people who have never seen it before, but with people who have made something before and want to make something else.”

In KinkCraft workshops—which they run for free at sex positive events and conferences around the UK—you can learn to fashion your own whips, canes, floggers, nipple clamps, and an array of different style handcuffs.
Their YouTube channel includes step-by-step instructions for crafting a pair of figure-of-eight cuffs out of paracord as well as a 20-minute guide to making your own flogger. The loops of brightly-coloured nylon rope might at first glance be more reminiscent of sportswear than hardcore BDSM kit, but the team say people love the funky hues (a change from the usual “dungeon” palette of red and black). Plus, being able to put a personalized touch to your toys adds to the frisson of using it.
“Kink is a very personal thing,” Andrew says. “So if you can play with a toy you actually made yourself then it brings something very different you don't get from other toys.”
“For a lot of people, having their partner make the flogger that will be used on them later brings a whole new edge to their toys.”

More stories to check out before you go

The sex toy industry is a billion-dollar market with countless makes, models and modes designed to maximize pleasure and boost your sex life — and, yes, we love our cool, fancy and high-tech toys with our whole hearts.
Yet some of the very first sex toys we’re exposed to are simple products kept around the house that just need a condom and a can-do attitude to get your engine revving. So if you’re shy about buying a vibrator or can’t afford/can’t wait to purchase a dildo at the moment, there are plenty of DIY sex toys available at your disposal . All you need to do is look around the house (and, of course, think carefully and thoughtfully about what is safe to put inside you or around you).
Before we go through the list, it’s important to note that cleanliness is key! Prior to using any foreign object in/on your vagina or nether regions, it must be sanitized and ideally covered with a condom or used over another layer of fabric. Otherwise, it could cause irritation or abrasions ( not at all sexy , folks!) And, for good measure, get in the habit of cleansing anything you use sexually post-game too ( you should be cleaning sex toys and keep in mind that we have to say goodbye to every good vibe eventually ). Safety first, please!
Check out some of our favorite household sex toys that, if used correctly (and safely), will give you a mind-blowing orgasm and leave you impressed with your own sexual ingenuity.
Our mission at SheKnows is to empower and inspire women, and we only feature products we think you’ll love as much as we do. Please note that if you purchase something by clicking on a link within this story, we may receive a small commission of the sale.
A version of this story was originally published in August 2017.
The same vibration capabilities meant to keep teeth clean can also be used to get you off. Using the non-bristled end, the vibrating handle can be laid against the space in between your labium when in the “on” position. The gentle vibrating sensations can provide just as much pleasure as any Rabbit can.
(You can even pick up a vibrating head attachment for your regular toothbrush if the idea of using the brush head squicks you out.)
Specifically, fruits and vegetables. There’s a reason they use bananas to teach people how to put on a condom. Pretty much anything resembling a penis can be used for penetration: Cucumber, carrot, banana, zucchini and Japanese eggplants are all great choices.
You can also try rolling a medium-size round fruit like a plum, tomato or clementine, in a circular motion over your clit for some fruitful stimulation. Just avoid hot peppers. Any capsaicin leakage could cause severe pain in those super-sensitive regions.
While perfect to chill your favorite cocktail, ice cubes are great to tease and tantalize your partner.
During foreplay, slowly run a cube over nipples, then down the torso, then down the happy trail, and see how long they can withstand the icy-cold sensation. Also, try sucking on an ice cube before kissing or giving oral for a whole new sensation.
Good for penetration, the handle of a hairbrush
is great to use on yourself or with your partner. Make sure not to use handles that are sharp or pointy at the end or too hard because you don’t want to tear any of that delicate tissue. Stick with a rubber handle. Also, put a condom over it to prevent infection and use plenty of lube.
If you don’t want to use it for penetration (because, like, fair!), the right hair brush can also be used for impact play .
An obvious one, but your showerhead makes for a fantastic clitoral vibrator. While a handheld showerhead is easier, if you don’t have one, just lay or sit on the floor of your shower with your legs spread and make sure the shower is on a harder-pulsating mode.
Be sure to keep the water on the cooler side so you don’t burn anything.
Find a tablespoon
and place the rounded bottom part on your clit and rub it out in a circular motion. What’s nice about the spoon is that there are no sharp edges and it’s super-smooth against the skin. Just wash it after use and maybe relocate it to your bedside drawer once you’re done.
It’s one of the best ways to cleanse your skin… and it makes for a pretty sweet sex toy, as well. When on, lay the bristled end over your clit for ultimate stimulation.
The bristles may feel rough, so it’s best to use over your panties. And since it’s designed to work in the shower, try using the vibrating handle part inside of you. Just remember to clean it well before and after, whichever part of your body you’re using it on.
Is there anything an iPhone can’t do? You can turn your phone into a vibrator simply by downloading a vibration app. There are many out there like iBrate and iVibe. Most of these apps have various intensity levels to play around with. It’s so simple and innocent-looking. Remember to use it over clothing or try putting your vibrating phone in a sock and using it directly on your skin to prevent infection.
A couch has nice, soft edges that are perfect to grind up on. Straddle the arms or sides of the cushion and hump away.
We would recommend leaving panties on… out of respect for whomever might be sitting on that couch later.
It’s not just a fashion accessory — though using fake pearls is preferred (and definitely not a family heirloom you plan on re-gifting anytime soon).
Take a string of pearls
and roll them into a ball and place them between your labium and on your clit. Then move them all around in circular motions. Each light movement of a pearl against this sensitive area creates a huge amount of stimulation.
