Clearance Hole Chart for Inch Fasteners

Hole size for general Metric threads
Percentage of thread engagement hole diameter (mm)
Percentage of thread engagement hole diameter (mm)
The allowable minor diameter indicates sizes from minimum to 6H, but the fine threads smaller than M1.8×0.2 are 4H and that of smaller than M2×0.25 are 5H.

Determine the minimum plated through hole and the pad diameter for resistor CF14JT1K00TR-ND according to IPC-7251, IPC-2222 and IPC-2221 standards.
For Level A Minimum Hole Size = 0.55mm + 0.25mm = 0.80mm For Level B Minimum Hole Size = 0.55mm + 0.20mm = 0.75mm For Level C Minimum Hole Size = 0.55mm + 0.15mm = 0.70mm
Pad Diameter for Level A = 0.80mm + (0.05 * 2) + 0.60mm = 1.50 mm Pad Diameter for Level B = 0.75mm + (0.05 * 2) + 0.50mm = 1.35 mm Pad Diameter for Level C = 0.70mm + (0.05 * 2) + 0.40mm = 1.20 mm
The formula for the minimum hole size are as follows:
Minimum Hole Size = Maximum Lead Diameter + 0.25mm (for Level A of IPC-2222) Minimum Hole Size = Maximum Lead Diameter + 0.20mm (for Level B of IPC-2222) Minimum Hole Size = Maximum Lead Diameter + 0.15mm (for Level C of IPC-2222)
To calculate for the minimum hole size for this resistor we should first determine its maximum lead diameter. This can vary depending on the shape of the lead, as shown on figure 1, we have a Round PTH Lead, Rectangle PTH Lead and a Square PTH Lead. These values are given on the parts datasheet or package drawing.
Looking into CF14JT1K00TR-ND datasheet we found out that the nominal value for its maximum lead diameter is equal to 0.55mm.
Therefore, the three possible minimum hole size are equal to:
For Level A Minimum Hole Size = 0.55mm + 0.25mm = 0.80mm For Level B Minimum Hole Size = 0.55mm + 0.20mm = 0.75mm For Level C Minimum Hole Size = 0.55mm + 0.15mm = 0.70mm
For the Pad Diameter we calculate its values using this formula:
Pad Diameter = Minimum Hole Size + (Minimum Annular Ring x 2) + Minimum Fabrication Allowance
According to IPC – 2221 the minimum annular ring is 0.05mm for external supported, and the minimum fabrication allowance is 0.60mm for Level A, 0.50mm for Level B and 0.40mm for Level C.
Using the minimum hole size we got from the previous calculation:
Pad Diameter for Level A = 0.80mm + (0.05 * 2) + 0.60mm = 1.50 mm Pad Diameter for Level B = 0.75mm + (0.05 * 2) + 0.50mm = 1.35 mm Pad Diameter for Level C = 0.70mm + (0.05 * 2) + 0.40mm = 1.20 mm

This design aid demonstrates part features that are too thin or too thick, bad bosses, right and wrong ribs, and other considerations to be mindful of while designing parts for injection molding.
