Following an undercover operation, Hoboken detectives broke up a prostitution ring and escort service in home at 324 Monroe St. on Friday, Sept. 17, according to police reports.
Police arrested two women who ran the escort ring and shut down the illegal operation.
Police received a tip from a citizen informant that a Hoboken business is charging for sex and advertises on backpage.com .
According to the informant, the customer pays a predetermined price for a massage up front to a reception immediately after entering the establishment. The customer is then walked into a private room where he/she puts $200 on the table, the informant told police.
The masseuse collects the money and performs all sexual activity, including intercourse, the informant told police.
At 4:40 p.m. on Friday, members of the Anti-Vice Squad launched an undercover operation to corroborate the information. Det. Steven Aguiar called the number listed on the ad, to make an appointment, reports said. A woman responded and told him he could visit anytime that day, reports said.
The rates are $65 for a 45-minute session and $70 for an hour-long session, she told Aguiar. He made an appointment for one hour at 6 p.m. that night, reports said. Lt. Tony Bartley and Sgt. Michael DeTrizio provided him with $270 from the city’s confidential funds, reports said.
The visit was audio recorded via Aguiar’s cell phone and monitored by Bartley, reports said.
Upon entering, Elena Gubskaya, 49, of Fort Lee, greeted him from a desk and guided him into a small room with a massage table on the left, reports said.
According to reports, Zhanna Surykava, 34, of Brooklyn, was designed to tend to him and shut the door behind her. Aguiar paid $70 up front and then placed $200 on the table. For $200, “You get everything,” Surykava told him, which she confirmed included sex.
Surykava then asked if he was a cop, to which Aguiar replied, “Yes,” reports said. He identified himself as a Hoboken detective and arrested her and Gubskaya, reports said.
A building inspector from the City of Hoboken Building Department determined that the building violated the terms of their Certificate of Occupancy and issued a notification of stop work order, which prevents the occupants from continuing to conduct business there, reports said.
A search of Surykava’s personal belongings revealed seven condoms and $660 in cash, which was seized as proceeds from illegal prostitution, police said.
Gubskaya and Surykava, the only two in the building at the time, were charged with promoting prostitution in violation of state law and operating a sexually oriented business within 1,000 feet of Connors Primary School, reports said. Surykava was also charged with engaging in prostitution, reports said.
Detective Lt. Mark Competello, the criminal investigations commander, said it was a sophisticated and well planned operation that relied on covert Internet promotion and brazenly engaged in criminal enterprise amid a residential area.
“Although this activity may not be prevalent in the City of Hoboken, it serves notice that Hoboken is far from immune to these types of criminal enterprises,” Competello said.
