Incest in the Bible refers to sexual relations between certain close kinship relationships which are prohibited by the Hebrew Bible . These prohibitions are found predominantly in
Leviticus 18:7–18 and 20:11–21 , but also in Deuteronomy . Jewish views on incest are based on the biblical categories of forbidden relationships and have been subject to rabbinic interpretations in the Talmud . (See also Forbidden relationships in Judaism .) The Karaites reject the authority of Talmudic opinions and interpret the biblical prohibitions differently. The various Christian denominations set their own categories of prohibited incestuous relationships, which have changed from time to time. (See Affinity (Catholic canon law) .) The laws of many countries regarding prohibited relationships do not necessarily follow the biblical prohibitions nor those of any particular church. (See Laws regarding incest .)

In ancient times, tribal nations preferred endogamous marriage – marriage to one's relatives; [1] the ideal marriage was usually that to a cousin, and it was often forbidden for an eldest daughter to even marry outside the family. [1] Marriage to a half-sister, for example, is considered incest by most nations today, but was common behaviour for Egyptian pharaohs ; similarly, the Book of Genesis portrays Sarah as marrying Abraham , her half-brother, without criticising the close genetic relationship between them, [2] and the Book of Samuel treats the marriage of a royal prince to his half-sister as unusual, rather than wicked. [1]

Leviticus 18:7–11 and 20:11–21 sets out lists of prohibited relationships, and two chapters later specifies punishments for such unions, but the second list of unions is much shorter than the first. Critical scholars regard the lists as having originally been independent documents, bound together at a later point. [3] [4] [5] The Deuteronomic Code gives a yet more simple list of prohibited relationships – a man's parent's daughter (including his sister), a man's father's wife (including his mother), and a man's mother-in-law. [6] [7] In the Hebrew Bible , sexual relationships between siblings are forbidden to Jews but permissible to Gentiles (non-Jews). [8]

One of the most notable features of each list is that sexual relations between a man and his own daughter is not explicitly prohibited. Although the first relation mentioned after the Levitical prohibition of sex with "near kin" names that of "thy father", [9] it must be taken into account that the Hebrew original text only addresses male Jews with regard to their female relatives. [10] The Talmud argues that the absence is because the prohibition was obvious , especially given the proscription against a relationship with a granddaughter, [11] although some biblical scholars have instead proposed that it was originally in the list, but was then accidentally left out from the copy on which modern versions of the text ultimately depend, due to a mistake by the scribe. [12] The second list in the Holiness code noticeably differs from the first by not including the closer relatives, and it might be assumed that obviousness is the explanation here as well. [1] One might argue that the explicit prohibition against engaging in sexual activity with a woman as well as with her daughter, [13] implicitly forbids sexual activity between a man and his daughter. However, the rationale might suggest otherwise (the original text is unclear here), since it mentions only that "they" (i.e., the woman and the daughter) are related. [14] John Calvin did not consider the father-daughter-relation to be explicitly forbidden by the bible, but regarded it as immoral nevertheless. [15]

Apart from the case of the daughter, the first incest list in Leviticus roughly produces the same rules as applied in early (pre-Islamic) Arabic culture; [1] in Islam , these pre-Islamic rules were made statutory. [12]

Ezekiel implies [12] that, in his time, marriage between a man and his stepmother, or his daughter-in-law, or his sister, were frequent. [16] This situation seems to be the target of the Deuteronomic version of the incest prohibition, which only addresses roughly the same three issues [1] [12] (though prohibiting the mother-in-law in place of the daughter-in-law). Early rabbinic commentators instead argue that the Deuteronomic list is so short because the other possible liaisons were obviously prohibited, and these three were the only liaisons difficult to detect, on account of the fact that, in their day, a man's stepmother, half-sister, and mother-in-law usually lived in the same house as the man (prior to any liaison). [17]

Also, cousins are not included in the lists of prohibited relationships. However, the Bible prohibits relationships with any close blood relative ( Leviticus 18:6 ).

Incest can be found in many varieties of literature, from popular forms to serious fiction, either as an important thematic element or as an incidental element of the plot. Incest is human sexual activity between family members or close relatives . [1] [2] This typically includes sexual activity between people in consanguinity (blood relations), and sometimes those related by affinity ( marriage or stepfamily ), adoption , clan , or lineage .

Incest also appears in the writings of several major authors of science fiction .

Incest has been a recurring subject in Japanese manga such as Osamu Tezuka 's Ayako (1972–1973). Incest has also been a subject in Japanese anime , dating all the way back to one of the medium's earliest pornographic titles, Cream Lemon . Sibling incest is the most common manifestation.

Cousin coupling is very common in anime , because cousin marriages in Japan are not incestuous but, on the contrary, they are actually seen as desirable. [15]

The popular anime Tenchi Muyo! has several instances of incest, which are seen as normal.

In Kotono Katō's Altair: A Record of Battles manga, Ayşe, a supporting character, has unrequited romantic feelings for her maternal uncle, Beyazit.

In the anime and manga franchise Vampire Knight , pure-blooded vampires often marry siblings to keep their bloodline pure – Yuki Cross's parents were siblings, and it was stated that she was "born" to be Kaname's (her older brother) wife.

In Maze , Mei and her brother, Akira, had an incestuous encounter when they were young and this led him to being viewed as an outcast by their parents. However, they are still in love with each other and remain together, despite their love being a taboo.

In the light novel, visual novel, and anime Oreimo , siblings Kyousuke and Kirino are a pair of teenage otaku who gradually fall in love with each other and maintain a sexual relationship in secret from their parents, against the objections of all their friends and in defiance of the conventions of society.

In the manga Aki Sora , Aki is in love with her little brother, Sora, and is later able to persuade him into a sexual relationship, though he often considers breaking it off due to the fact he cannot see a future with this relationship. In the final chapter, they compromise and end their forbidden relationship. Later on in the manga he is repeatedly forced to have sex with his twin sister Nami. It is later discovered that their parents had been brother and sister.

In the manga True Love , siblings Yuzuru and Ai were separated for 10 years after their parents’ divorce. But, after reuniting, they begin to fall in love and have a secret relationship, against the objections of their mother and friends. They later find out they are not biologically related as he was adopted and they get married.

In the Tokyo Ghoul series written by Sui Ishida , one of the main antagonists, Kichimura Washū, is in love with his half-sister, Rize Kamishiro: he had helped her escape from the Sunlit Garden, but she turned him down. Kichimura begun stalking her and in the prologue, threw multiple steel beams on Rize in a construction area after she was seen with the protagonist, Ken Kaneki, thus resulting in the latter becoming a ghoul, setting the story in motion. In the later part of the series, Kichimura stated wanting to "share a bunch of kids" with Rize; their relationship in the anime was briefly seen and the incest part was only implied in the final episode.

Certain anime programs, such as Koi Kaze and Please Twins! , are serious, even sympathetic, studies of the characters as they struggle with their emotions and societal taboos. In Please Twins! this is because both girls fell in love with the protagonist, despite knowing that either of them could be his biological twin sister.

In the shojo manga Boku wa Imōto ni Koi o Suru , Yori and Iku are twin brother and sister who have been extremely close all their lives and who now begin to fall in love with each other and have to face the consequences of it. It is later revealed that they are half-twins due to them being the product of a heteropaternal superfecundation (they have different fathers). At the end, Yori attempts to separate from her for 10 years but when he and Iku reunite, he says that he still loves her and it is hinted that they have resumed their relationship.

In the visual novel and anime Yosuga no Sora , Sora has feelings for her twin brother, Haru, ever since they were kids. After their parents died, they moved back to the old house and Sora has been keeping her feelings suppressed while she fantasizes being with him. In episode 11 and 12, they had opened themselves to their feelings and decide to abandon their friends and home to be together.

In the series Kaze to Ki no Uta , Gilbert is physically, emotionally, and sexually abused by his father, Auguste, who poses as his uncle. Auguste, who is interested in making Gilbert as his own personal pet, can be kind to Gilbert at one time and then be cruel in another. His influence is so strong that Gilbert actually believes they are in love; this ultimately has tragic consequences for Gilbert's relationship with Serge.

Papa to Kiss in the Dark centers around a 15-year-old boy having an incestuous relationship with his father, who is later revealed to be his uncle.

In Tokyo Ghoul , CCG's chairman and ghoul Tsuneyoshi Washū plans to rape his daughter Rize Kamishiro in order to "preserve" the pure ghoul Washū family; also, he is a serial rapist of human women, resulting in the birth of half-human illegitimate Washū members.

I stayed at my sister’s house recently, as I have done many times when my husband works away from home.
However, on this particular night, she was called into work at the hospital at short notice.
I went to bed early but got up to go to the bathroom.
As I passed her bedroom, the door was ajar and I heard moaning from inside where my brother-in-law was supposed to be sleeping.

Maybe it’s connected to going through the menopause in your 40s. You might have wanted to prove that you’re still a sexual being and attractive to men. However, it’s just terribly sad that you’ve chosen your sister’s husband to live out this fantasy with.
You’re also married yourself, so you’ve cheated on your own hubby as well as betrayed your sister.
I think you know in your own heart that if you have any chance of having a relationship with your sister in the future that you a) can’t revisit it b) you can’t stay the night at hers again and c) you can’t tell her what happened.
What’s worrying is that you can’t stop thinking of him. I’m not condoning what either of you did, but sometimes ignorance is bliss. This might be one of those times, if you can guarantee it won’t happen again.
If you come clean, she’ll either dump her husband and your relationship will never be the same, or she’ll stay and cut you out. If you stay quiet, you have to live with it. Only you can decide.
The chances are if you did stay at your sister’s and she was called into work, it would happen again and become a regular thing.
