In this introductory article, we'll learn about the HikariCP JDBC connection pool project. This is a very lightweight (at roughly 130Kb) and lightning-fast JDBC connection pooling framework developed by Brett Wooldridge around 2012.
There are several benchmark results available to compare the performance of HikariCP with other connection pooling frameworks such as c3p0 , dbcp2 , tomcat , and vibur . For example, the HikariCP team published below benchmarks (original results available here ):
The framework is so fast because the following techniques have been applied:
Let's build a sample application to highlight its usage. HikariCP comes with support for all the main versions of JVM. Each version requires its dependency; for Java 8 through 11, we have:
Older JDK versions like 6 and 7 are also supported. The appropriate versions can be found here and here . Also, we can check the latest versions in the Central Maven Repository .
Letโ€™s now create a demo application. Please note that we need to include a suitable JDBC driver class dependency in the pom.xml . If no dependencies are provided, the application will throw a ClassNotFoundException .
We will use HikariCP's DataSource to create a single instance of a data source for our application:
Point to note here is the initialization in the static block.
HikariConfig is the configuration class used to initialize a data source. It comes with four well-known must-used parameters username , password , jdbcUrl , dataSourceClassName .
Out of jdbcUrl and dataSourceClassName , either one is to be used at a time. However, when using this property with older drivers, we may need to set both properties.
In addition to these properties, there are several other properties available that may not all be offered by other pooling frameworks:
HikariCP stands out because of these database properties. It's advanced enough to even detect connection leaks by itself!
A detailed description of these properties can be found here .
We can also initialize HikariConfig with a properties file placed in the resources directory:
The properties file should look something like this:
We can use java.util.Properties- based configuration as well:
Alternatively, we can initialize a data source directly:
Now that we have defined the data source, we can use it to obtain a connection from the configured connection pool and perform JDBC related actions.
Suppose we have two tables named dept and emp to simulate an employee-department use case. We will write a class to fetch those details from the database using HikariCP.
Below we list the SQL statements necessary to create the sample data:
Please note if we use an in-memory database such as H2, we need to automatically load the database script before running the actual code to fetch the data. Thankfully, H2 comes with an INIT parameter that can load the database script from the classpath at runtime. The JDBC URL should look like:
We need to create a method to fetch these data from the database:
Now, we need to create a JUnit method to test it. Since we know the number of rows in the table emp , we can expect that the size of the returned list should be equal to the number of rows:
In this quick tutorial, we learned about the benefits of using HikariCP and its configuration.
As always, the full source code is available over on GitHub .

Mitsuri Kanroji ( ็”˜ ( ใ‹ใ‚“ ) ้œฒ ( ใ‚ ) ๅฏบ ( ใ˜ ) ่œœ ( ใฟใค ) ็’ƒ ( ใ‚Š ) , Kanroji Mitsuri ? ) is a major supporting character ofย  Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba . She is also a Demon Slayer and the Love Hashira ( ๆ‹ ( ใ“ใ„ ) ๆŸฑ ( ใฐใ—ใ‚‰ ) , Koi Bashira ? ) of the Demon Slayer Corps . [3]

Mitsuri is a young woman with fair skin and round, light green eyes with long eyelashes, a small mole beneath each of them. She has long, pink hair that fades into a neon green color at the halfway point, which she wears in three thick braids with five shorter clumps hanging over her face as bangs. When she was trying to get married, her hair was dyed black in an attempt to make herself look more "normal."

Mitsuri wears a modified purple tinted version of the standard Demon Slayer uniform along with a plain white haori that was gifted to her by Kyojuro Rengoku . [4] The chest area of her uniform is left unbuttoned and she wears a short skirt in place of the usual hakama pants. Additionally, she wears a pair of navy blue thigh-high socks layered with the striped lime-green socks Obanai Iguro gave to her and a pair of white zลri with pink straps.

While at the Swordsmith Village , Mitsuri wore a kimono with floral designs.

During her and the other remaining Hashira's fight against Muzan , Mitsuri's left and back braids are cut off by Muzan Kibutsuji 's attacks, now shortened to shoulder length, and part of her left ear is also torn at the side. [5] Mitsuri also loses both of her arms in the process of ripping out Muzan's left arm clean off. [6]

Mitsuri is a very emotional and passionate person who constantly compliments people in her head, likely a contributing factor towards her nickname as "the Hashira of Love." Although she is rather shy and is easily flustered, Mitsuri is always kind to others, most notably towards Obanai, whom she appears to share a strong bond with. However, despite her gentle demeanor, Mitsuri will show no mercy in the face of Demon s, instead expressing such sentiments with a fierce tone. She showcases a great amount of dedication to the Demon Slayers' cause. Despite being put out of commission by Muzan at an early stage in their battle, she was determined enough to return and fight.

Given her desperation for marriage, Mitsuri decided to become a member of the Corps with the purpose of finding a suitable husband stronger than her, a rather difficult task given the astounding level of her physical strength. Upon joining the Corps, she felt an immense amount of guilt for her reasoning behind becoming a Demon Slayer to the point where she ate much less than her typical meals. However, she was able to move past those feelings with the help of Shinobu Kocho and Obanai Iguro . [7]

Besides her rather emotional personality, Mitsuri can also come off as somewhat childish at times. When she is asked to explain the process of obtaining the Demon Slayer Mark , she describes it using noises and sounds.

She is a very caring person, always showing others her love as befits her Hashira title. She can get rather excitable, grabbing her friends for a big group hug after the battle against Gyokko and Hantengu.

When she is slashed by Muzan and taken out of the battle by Obanai, she says she wants to be of use and not drag everyone else down. She even begs for Obanai to come back and not get himself killed. This alludes to her love for him, the person she can finally feel for and be loved by. She shares Obanai's hope that they could reincarnate, meet each other and get married in other life.

As a Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, Mitsuri is a very powerful swordsman. [8] She is said to have completed the Final Selection within a mere six months of training, which Kyojuro considers outstanding. [4] As the Love Hashira , Mitsuri utilizes a combat style based on "love".

Love Breathing ( ๆ‹ ( ใ“ใ„ ) ใฎ ๅ‘ผ ( ใ“ ) ๅธ ( ใใ‚…ใ† ) , Koi no kokyลซ ? ) : A Breathing Style originally branched out from the Flame Breathing . The forms and techniques that are used in this Breathing Style is a combination of whip-like attacks and therefore can only be successfully performed by Mitsuri due the unique constitution of her body that renders her incredibly flexible and agile, but still possessing inhuman strength due to her muscles being eight times denser than a normal human's, allowing her to deliver fast and powerful blows and move unhindered due to her body not being physically bulky.

Flame Breathing ( ็‚Ž ( ใปใฎใŠ ) ใฎ ๅ‘ผ ( ใ“ ) ๅธ ( ใใ‚…ใ† ) , Honล no kokyลซ ? ) : One of the core Breathing Styles , this style ran in the Rengoku family since Breathing Styles were invented and has been taught to Mitsuri by Kyojuro. However, although Mitsuri has learnt it, she was not as skillful with it and cannot fight to her fullest using it, leading her to solely develop the Love Breathing . [16]

I wondered if it was okay for me to be strong since I was a girl. And if I could live my life without people calling me an inhuman monster. I suppressed my power out of fear... but I'll stop now. Leave it to me, I'll protect everyone.
