About This Game
Highway Blossoms is a short yuri kinetic novel set in the American Southwest. After an old gold rush miner's journal is discovered, supposedly detailing where he hid parts of his stash, a nationwide craze begins as would-be prospectors try to solve its clues and strike it rich. Amber couldn't care less. Wandering the desert in a recently-inherited motorhome, she mourns the loss of her grandfather - indifferent and unaware of the hunt happening around her. It's not until she meets Marina, a young hitchhiker lost in New Mexico that the girls get swept up in the rush. At least tens of words, maybe even hundreds. Although the last word count puts it around 90,000, so expect 6 or so hours of reading. Grand, hand-painted vistas of actual landmarks in the western United States, all in glorious 1080p detail. A huge soundtrack featuring the works of Smoke Thief, Jake Abernathie, Able Kirby, and other friends of the team. Sounds right at home on your in-dash cassette tape player. Accessibility options for days, including the ability to skip through everything in less than five minutes. But who would wanna do that? Achievements, although to be honest, they might be stretching the definition of "achievement." Alternate silly content for second readthroughs that was written by the programmer with little to no oversight. This may or may not have been a good idea.

The old Domes were among the few buildings at Harbin to survive the fire.
I’m in a heart-shaped pool, not much larger than a backyard hot tub, with four naked strangers. We’re all masked, which feels odd only because we’re otherwise so exposed. But the nudity isn’t what makes being at Harbin a big deal. And neither is the truly momentous event of my month: getting vaccinated. Both, however, were the backdrop to the day — the reason why the symbolism of this visit to Harbin’s “healing waters” felt a bit too on-the-nose.
This is, after all, a place that was reduced to literal ash not long ago.
And now, six years after Harbin was incinerated by the Valley fire of 2015, I’m alternating between its simmering 112-degree hot mineral pool, its frigid cold plunge and the more reasonable 98-degree heart pool. I’m watching that one couple — there’s always one — and praying they’re not doing what I think they’re doing. And I’m taking stock, again and again, of what remains and what has changed.
In fairness, I did not plan this trip — my first back to Harbin Hot Springs since the fire — to be a Phoenix-from-the-flames metaphor. I also did not plan to pick up hitchhikers. Or hug strangers. Or nearly get knocked out of bed by an earthquake. But here we are, wallowing naked under the lumpy hills of Lake County.

Harbin was one of a dozen or so hot springs in my mom’s rotation when I was growing up in Mendocino, the child of Reagan-era back-to-the-landers who were never married and long separated. As a kid, all these places were a blur of swimming pools, picnic-style meals slapped together in a communal kitchen and naked bodies — some pale, some leathery, some smooshy, some bony — drinking the sunlight like the black-brown lizards that you see everywhere in this geothermal landscape.
Years later, in my twenties, Harbin was where I’d bring East Coast friends for a crash course in California’s rural counterculture. In its weirdness and beauty, Harbin would blow their minds. They could not believe this is how my family, or any family, spent a weekend.
But even then, Harbin felt like an ember, the last of its kind. So many of the hot springs I’d grown up visiting were already unrecognizable by the mid-aughts, like the mossy cabins at Mendocino’s Orr, Calistoga’s mid-century motels with sulfur-smelling pools, or Wilbur up in Colusa County, where I once came much too close to a rattlesnake. They’d been “reimagined,” gussied up, and made inaccessible to most locals. But unlike most other hot springs in the region, Harbin hadn’t become just another spa for affluent Bay Area weekenders.
It was run differently. Spread across 1500 acres just north of the Napa County line, Harbin has long been an institution for hippies and New Agers, European transplants and free spirits. Private rooms in its old “Mainside” lodge buildings — named Fern, Azalea, and Walnut — weren’t cheap, but they weren’t $300 a night like Orr or $500 like Calistoga’s retro-fabulous Indian Springs.
Harbin went out of its way to make itself available with dorm-style bunks starting at $40 and rooms with European-style shared baths (starting at $60 for a single). There was even the option to buy a 24-hour pass for $30 a day or $220 for an entire week that allows you to sleep wherever you like. There was a guest kitchen, and the camping price, less than a state park, included
