Durante una normale giornata di scuola scoppia una pandemia che trasforma gli esseri umani in zombie, eufemisticamente chiamati dai protagonisti della storia "loro". La storia ruota intorno a Takashi Komuro, uno studente giapponese della Fujimi High School, che sopravvive allo scoppio iniziale della pandemia insieme ad alcuni suoi compagni e all'infermiera della scuola.

In una normale giornata di scuola, un professore viene morso da un morto vivente e, trasformato a sua volta, diffonde l'epidemia in tutto il suo istituto.
Saya si accorge che i morti viventi sono ciechi e con l'aiuto di Hirano, che riesce a costruire un rudimentale fucile, riesce a trovare una via di fuga.
I ragazzi capiscono che l'epidemia dei morti viventi sta velocemente interessando anche il resto del mondo, quindi decidono di tentare di raggiungere le proprie famiglie.
Rei e Takashi si ritrovano isolati dal resto del gruppo e devono superare diverse difficoltà, tra cui un essere umano impazzito, per raggiungere il rendezvous.
Il Governo cerca di mettere in salvo più persone possibili organizzando dei voli, mentre in città la polizia cerca di contenere il contagio bloccando i ponti.
Il gruppo ha finalmente attimi di pace dopo aver raggiunto casa di Rika, dove può anche riorganizzare il proprio equipaggiamento. In città però le cose vanno sempre peggio.
Un uomo e la sua piccola figlia cercano riparo nella casa accanto a dove si trovano i ragazzi, ma viene ucciso dai residenti. Il gruppo si lancia al salvataggio della bambina.
La First Lady nasconde il fatto di essere stata morsa e porta il contagio anche sull'aereo presidenziale. Prima di morire, il presidente autorizza un attacco missilistico.
Takashi e Saeko devono farsi strada in un'orda di infetti. La ragazza rimane impietrita davanti ad un gruppo di bambini non morti, mettendo in difficoltà anche Takashi.
Takashi non vuole restare a casa di Saya, in quanto non gradisce che il suo gruppo venga trattato al pari di ragazzini. Ne scaturisce una lite con i genitori della ragazza.
Visto il crescente malumore che serpeggia nella casa di Saya, i ragazzi decidono che è il momento di ripartire per rimettersi alla ricerca delle proprie famiglie.
Un missile esploso sopra il Giappone causa l'annientamento di qualsiasi apparecchio elettronico, compreso il bus di Shido che va a scontrarsi contro una barricata.
I ragazzi raggiungono in barca un'isola deserta e, sentendosi al sicuro, decidono finalmente di rilassarsi. Ma il fumo provocato da delle foglie, gli provocherà effetti allucinogeni, che porteranno ad imprevedibili conseguenze.
