Highschool of the Dead is an an action, adventure, drama, horror, zombie, harem, fanservice anime series. It's based
on a manga series written by Disuke Sato, illustrated by Shoji Sato, and published by Fujimi Shobo for volumes 6-7 and Kadokawa Shoten for volumes 1-5 for the magazine Monthly Dragon Age. It originally ran from September, 2006 to March 22, 2017, when it had to end, presumably, due to the author's death, with 7 volumes in total. After that came the anime adaptation. It was directed by Tetsuo Araki, written by Yosuke Kuroda, musically composed by Takafumi Wada, and produced by Mitsutoshi Ogura and Studio Madhouse. It originally ran from July 5, 2010 to September 10, 2010 for 12 episodes in total. After the main series ended there was an OVA, titled, Drifters of the Dead, which came out on April 27, 2011. It was directed by Tetsuo Araki, written by Yosuke Kuroda, musically composed by Takafumi Wada, and produced by Mitsutoshi Ogura and Studio Madhouse.

Highschool of the Dead is set in present-day Japan, beginning as the world is struck by a deadly pandemic that turns humans into zombies , euphemistically referred to by the main characters as "Them" (愎ら Yatsu-ra ). The story follows a group of high school students and the school's nurse as they deal with a worldwide catastrophic event known as the "Outbreak". As the cast tries to survive the zombie apocalypse , they must also face the additional threats of societal collapse , in the form of dangerous fellow survivors, and the possible decay of their own moral codes . Starting from the high school, the students escape into town where they must deal with a corrupt teacher and his students. They check their homes for survivors, and pick up a little girl and a dog. Later, they hold up at a mall, travel through a police station, and eventually make their way to an elementary school that is supposedly a safe zone.

In Japan, the sixth volume of Highschool of the Dead reached #5 on the Oricon charts between July 5 and July 11, 2010, selling 92,040 copies, [39 ] and #13 between July 12 and July 18, 2010, selling 43,714 copies for a total of 135,754 copies. [40 ] The seventh volume of Highschool of the Dead reached #11 on the Oricon charts between May 2 and May 8, 2011, selling 57,016 copies, [41 ] #2 between May 9 and May 15, 2011, selling 115,154 copies, [42 ] and #19 between May 16 and May 22, 2011, selling 34,362 copies for a total of 206,532 copies. [43 ]

In North America, the second volume of the manga reached The New York Times Best-Selling Manga List, reaching #4 between April 24 and April 30, 2011, [44 ] #10 between May 1 and May 7, 2011, [45 ] and #8 between May 8 and May 14, 2011. [46 ]

For the anime adaptation, Chris Beveridge from Mania.com comments on the first episode, "There's a lot to like here if you're looking for something beyond the usual high school dramas and comedies of the last few years." [47 ] Carlo Santos of Anime News Network states that, "Other recent zombie works in Western entertainment have tried to play it ironic, or postmodernist, or just plain silly, but this one goes for straight-up horror—and pulls it off admirably." [48 ] However, Zac Bertschy, also of Anime News Network , states for this episode that, "It just could've easily been written by a script generator or a horror fan with 19 minutes to kill." [49 ]

Andy Hanley of the UK Anime Network summaries the first manga volume as: "Nothing ground-breaking here, but a volume of mindless fun that brings all of the gory entertainment of a zombie apocalypse to the printed page." [50 ] Chris Lanxon of Wired UK praises its production quality despite having no single original element. [51 ]

At a Comic-Con "Best and Worst Manga of 2011" panel, it was listed among the "Worst Manga" in a series of rapid-fire questions. [52 ]

In March 2015, the Chinese Ministry of Culture announced a crackdown on sites hosting overly-violent or sexual anime content, with Highschool of the Dead being singled out as an example due to its sexual content; the Ministry described it as "borderline-pornographic".

As ridiculous as the fan service was in Highschool of the dead, I still think episode 1 is amazing!

Watched it again recently and the dark intro and creepy ass music really made me look forward to where the show was headed. And honestly if the show wasn't so fan servicy and more plot based, it could have been something spectacular in my opinion! Even if you're not planning on watching the series, if you like zombies/horror, I at least say check episode 1 out for some awesomeness :)!
i came to the show expecting just a shit load of tits. After watching the first eps i was jaw dropped cause of how good it was. Sadly it later became a tit fest but i agree, the first 4-5 eps were truly incredible.
I'll never forget the scene where the two girls are skipping hand in hand at the top of the stairs saying how they will always stick together.
One gets grabbed and her friend kicks her off her when she is getting held on to.
Was a powerful scene, but then a lot of the first episode was really well done.
I love the part where he just straight up smacks sense into a person who isn't grasping the situation
agree, the way he smacked that tsundere girl was so satisfying. Every one thought it was going to turn into one of this annoying arguments in which the guy had to let the girl win to not look like a douche
I fucking love this entire series as a whole. Zombie media is a personal guilty pleasure of mine and I couldn't resist watching this. When I first saw it, I was blown away by the first episode and how amazing the twist from high school drama to action bloody as fuck high school drama was. The fan service caught me off guard but I enjoyed it so much that I bought the manga afterwards to finish the cliffhanger ending.
Even with the fan service, it's a great fucking show. I'm still praying for more chapters.....
I really wish I knew what we could do to get the author back on it, because I know he didn't drop it from a lack of success.
Episode 1 was brilliantly directed. Even my fanservice-hating friend mustered up the drive to finish the series after watching that.

Highschool of the Dead was a standout of the ecchi genre when it first premiered in 2010, and is still remembered today, for better or worse.
About 10 years ago, the anime world was changed forever when Episode 8 of Highschool of the Dead premiered. The episode is infamous for its unique and somewhat disturbing physics. In the episode, a bullet weaved its way in between Saeko Busujima's breasts without harming her in the slightest.
The anime was already pretty bizarre and risque prior to this point, but this episode solidified that Highschool of the Dead was perhaps the silliest NSFW anime of all time. There have been many anime series that have been filled to the brim with fanservice and there will surely be many more in the future, but Highschool of the Dead is a standout in the genre.
The premise is nothing too out of the ordinary. There's a zombie outbreak in Japan and unlikely allies from the same high school team up in order to survive and fight off the zombies. While that sounds typical of any zombie movie or TV show, Highschool of the Dead just puts it all out there, sometimes all too literally. Beyond just the expect violence and gore, there are also tons of suggestive themes, with panty shots, nudity and a lot of jiggling breasts.
This may be a turn off to some viewers, but it's also just so ridiculous that many others found it enjoyable overall. The series never really took itself too seriously, fully self-aware of its over-the-top nature. Even the characters seemed self-aware at points, making for plenty of intentional comedy. While all the fanservice was a bit excessive and even distracting at times, the anime still did a fine job exploring the characters and their relationships.
Takashi and Rei's complicated relationship was the main relationship explored in the series. Takashi had feelings for Rei, but she was already in a relationship. However, her boyfriend was attacked by and turned into a zombie, which led to him being killed by Takashi. While Takashi and Rei's relationship would move forev forward form there, there were awkward and confrontational moments between them as well.
Throughout their journey, Takashi also took a liking to Saeko. While it's unclear if Saeko reciprocates Takashi's feelings, she did feel comfortable enough to open up to him and tell him about her sadistic side. Since they were all in a survival situation going up against an army of zombies, it was important for everyone to be able a strong bond as a group. It wasn't easy and there was noticeable tension between them at several points, but it felt like there was a stronger connection between them by the time the series came to an end.
Highschool of the Dead doesn't have the deepest story, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have an engaging one. It's an enjoyable zombie apocalypse-style series that has plenty of action, comedy, drama, a solid cast of characters and plenty of ecchi fanservice. Not every anime needs to be deep and though-provoking to be enjoyable.
The series has had its fair share of controversy, and its panty shots and boob physics aren't for everyone. However, the series often laughs at itself. Though there are dramatic and serious moments, mostly the show is just a fun wild ride overall. Even 10 years later, with other ecchi anime come and gone, Highschool of the Dead still remains a standout of the genre.
