High School Of The Dead Season 2 - What We Know So Far

By Brandon Shoaff / Updated: Jan. 21, 2022 3:43 pm EDT
"High School of the Dead" is a popular anime series inspired by the manga by Daisuke Sato and Shoji Sato. The anime follows the impressive rise in zombie fiction and shows off what would happen if a large section of the population suddenly turned into the undead. Known as 'The Outbreak' within the series, the plague destroys most of society and the zombies are almost always referred to as "Them." In typical zombie-world fashion though, the ravenous corpses aren't always the biggest threat, with other survivors often appearing to be far more dangerous. It may not be the easiest anime to get into , but it still proves popular with hardcore fans.
There are currently seven volumes of the manga, and two collected omnibus editions that package volumes one through four, and volumes five through seven, respectively. The first season of the anime series ran for twelve episodes and a standalone special (or "OVA") that was chock full of fan service. However, when might fans of "High School of the Dead" see a second season?
The final chapter of the manga was released in April of 2013, while the last episode of Season 1 aired on September 20, 2010. The OVA titled "Drifters of the Dead" was released later on Blu-Ray on April 26, 2011. The anime collected the works of the first four volumes of the manga, which means there are three more volumes to go. So what kind of time frame does "High School of the Dead" have for a release date?
Unfortunately, there the outlook for a potential Season 2 of "High School of the Dead" is not great. First and foremost, the original series creator Daisuke Sato died in 2017. The second speed bump is just the amount of time that has already passed — the original series ended over 10 years ago. But die-hard fans of "High School of the Dead" still hold out hope for a better future, much like the survivors of "HSotD." With some source material left to adapt, it's certainly a possibility that someone could choose to revive it.
While Season 2 of "High School of the Dead" is hypothetical at this point, the characters that could appear are a bit more pinned down, on account of the manga and the cast of the anime. In Season 1, Leraldo Anzaldua stars as Takashi Komuro, Jessica Boone as Rei Miyamoto, Taylor Hannah as Saeko Busujima, Maggie Flecknoe as Saya Takagi, Mark X. Laskowski as Kohta Hirano, Monica Rial as Shizuka Marikawa, and Brittney Karbowski as Alice Maresato within the English dub. All of these characters started off with rudimentary weapons like wooden swords, but they later outfit themselves with several military-grade firearms.
We might also see some secondary characters like the villainous teacher Koichi Shido (Illich Guardiola), police officer Rika Minami (Melissa Davis), or even Rei Miyamoto's mother, Kiriko (who has yet to appear in the anime) or father, Tadashi (Steven Knight). There could also be other appearances, or perhaps even new characters if the second season of "High School of the Dead" ever happens. Whether the original voice actors would return after so much time has passed is another story.
The plot of "High School of the Dead," much like other works in the zombie-verse, follows an intrepid band of survivors as they make their way in a hostile world. The classmates of "High School of the Dead" are generally good people, but as mentioned earlier, not everybody is keen on helping humanity rise above its more bestial aspects. Answers could be provided as to what happened before "The Outbreak," and if any nefarious elements are totally involved with the calamity.
It is also important to note that the source material manga also ended abruptly, so if anybody else picks up the reins to "High School of the Dead" and wants to continue the story, they'll have to forge their own path forward. Is there any hope for a normal life in a world where most people are traumatized or a leering corpse? Is there an easy way to cure the undead that doesn't involve bashing in brains? We may never get a chance to see another season of "High School of the Dead" but one can only hope.
