The 32-year-old Oregon City High School teacher known as Xander was doing fine until he sexted a not-very-sexy picture of his crotch -- his fully clothed crotch -- to a female student half his age.
Alexander Joseph Taylor and the 16-year-old girl were frequent fliers on Snapchat, an app that allows users to exchange photos, videos or messages that vanish in 10 seconds or less.
Until the teen showed Taylor's picture to a friend, who told her parents, who alerted the school district. School officials conducted an investigation in April and called the cops.
"It's hard to keep secrets around teens," said Clackamas County prosecutor Bryan Brock.
Taylor resigned in June. On Monday, he was arraigned and immediately pled guilty to two counts of first-degree official misconduct. He was sentenced to 10 days in jail and 18 months of probation.
As sexting goes, Taylor's activities were inappropriate but not particularly lewd.
The girl sent him pictures of herself in her underwear. He responded with the crotch shot.
He inquired about her virginity, requested more photos and asked her to come over to his apartment for a make-out session.
And there were some flirty exchanges.
"Oh, it's shower time," the girl texted Taylor.
The girl and Taylor communicated so much on Snapchat -- Taylor's online name was Xanderpoo -- that he qualified as her "best friend," to the dismay of her boyfriend, Brock said.
On Valentine's Day, Taylor gave his cell phone to another student, 17-year-old Nikki Ainsworth. He had a social relationship with Ainsworth. He became her confidante and accompanied her to an open house for prospective students at a local college.
On the phone given to Ainsworth, police found photos of about a dozen scantily clad girls who appeared to be teenagers. One was a former student of Taylor's whom he dated after she turned 18.
Taylor was hired by the Oregon City School District in 2007. He taught chemistry and was an assistant boy's basketball coach. It was his first teaching job. Prior to that he was an assistant manager at Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
The Oregon City School District conducted its own investigation. Human Resources Director Chris Mills, citing a legal exemption, declined to discuss the investigation or any disciplinary action taken against Taylor.
Brock said Taylor had been disciplined in the past by the school district for his behavior involving students, primarily for making inappropriate comments and for being in a closed-door classroom with a student.
Ainsworth, now 18, spoke in support of Taylor at his sentencing and urged Circuit Judge Heather Karabeika not to impose a no-contact order that would prohibit her from communicating with Taylor while he is on probation.
"Xander Taylor has been a huge support system in my life for the past three years," Ainsworth told the judge. "I've had a lot of things happen, that happened very hard on me, and it's not getting any better. He has been there to support me and has always given me advice that has helped me get better."
