I just wanted to say I am quite impressed with the work you are doing with your students. The topics you have been approaching are not easy, by any means. I enjoyed doing the assignment with [my student] and the insight it gave me into him is very helpful. Thank you again for the great work.
The best workshop I have attended! Fun, interactive, and informative. Well organized.

PPLM’s teacher training for the implementation of Get Real was outstanding. As an educator it provided me information and activities that resulted in a very successful unit on human sexuality.

Get Real makes it a lot easier to have those important conversations. Parents are able to make real headway in helping young teens learn to navigate the road ahead.

It was time for an organized comprehensive Social Emotional Learning (SEL) based curriculum. I love the SEL basis. Social & Emotional Health is the biggest predictor of success.

Get Real organizes all of the best practices of sexuality education in a developmentally appropriate manner. Thanks to PPLM for putting it all together!

The trainers for this curriculum training were very knowledgeable and highly skilled in sexuality education in general and the Get Real curriculum specifically.

Thanks for all the information and materials. My boys actually said to me, ‘Hey Mom, I didn’t know……That was awesome!’ I felt so connected and more importantly, I felt trusted.
This program was very helpful to me. It’s time for me to talk to my daughter but I just didn’t know how. Now I know how to initiate the conversation.
Get Real is helping our students develop the self-awareness and effective interpersonal skills they need to negotiate the many changes of puberty.
Having been to many conferences and trainings over 33 years, this was one of the best!

We identified a need to evaluate our current middle school sex ed program and we were impressed with the Get Real curriculum.
We thought (Get Real) was a great program and would be an excellent fit to our community.
As a parent, you have a right to know what sex education curriculum is being offered in your school district. If you’re not satisfied with what you see, you can be instrumental in bringing about change. Here are some steps you can take to learn more about the sex education curriculum in your school or district and to take action to improve the quality of your school’s curriculum.

In June of 2004, Public Acts 165 and 166 modified Michigan laws related to sex education in public schools. Public Acts 165 and 166 outline the planning, training, and implementation mandates for HIV/AIDS and sex education.
Public Acts 165 and 166 provide students information about dangerous communicable diseases, including but not limited to, HIV/AIDS. HIV/AIDS education must be offered at least once a year at every building level (elementary, middle, and high), and each person who teaches K-12 pupils about HIV/AIDS shall have training in HIV and AIDS education.
The Sex Education Advisory Board membership is comprised of 18 members. The board is co-chaired by a parent and a school employee. By law, half of the members are required to be parents and community members, including clergy, health care professionals, and health education professionals. The remaining members are principals and classroom teachers. Meetings are scheduled as needed when changes in the approved curriculum are required.
The Haslett Sex Education Advisory Board Selection Process

The role and responsibilities of the Advisory Board are to:
The Haslett Public School Sex Education Advisory Board and the Haslett Board of Education have approved the following goals and objectives for the K-12 program of instruction in HIV/AIDS, reproductive health, and sex education. The goals and objectives are aligned with state laws, the State Board of Education Policy to Promote Health and Prevent Disease and Pregnancy (2003), and the Grade Level Content Expectations, as well as the Michigan Merit Curriculum Credit Guidelines for Health Education, recently adopted by the Michigan Board of Education (2007).
The Haslet Board of Education recognizes the importance of instruction in sex education as a part of a comprehensive education. The Board affirms the role of the school in presenting accurate information, dispelling existing myths, and providing guidance to students in decisions relative to sexuality. It shall also act in a responsible manner to present accurate information relating to current issues of reproductive health. The Board supports the role of the family unit as the primary source of guidance. The sex education program shall be taught using a uniform curriculum approved by the Haslett Sex Education Advisory Board and taught by specially certified instructors and shall actively promote communication and understanding between parents or guardians, students and the schools.
At the end of the K-12 HIV/STD and sex education program of instruction, students will be able to:
All parents are notified prior to presentation of HIV/AIDS and Sex Education in grades K-9. A parent letter is sent home inviting parents to attend an information night and/or an opportunity to preview the curriculum materials. Parents wishing to excuse their child from participation in the Sex Education/Health classes are requested to send a written notice to their child's teacher prior to the beginning of instruction.
