The first time I watched High Heels and Low Lifes it was on TV late, somewhat around 1 or 2 in the morning during the week. Having never heard of it before and not expecting anything, I kept watching it and ended up surprised. Sure, the story is a bit thin and there are no well known actors in it, but this movie simply works. In it's best moments, the chemistry between the two leading actresses works really well and is enjoyable to watch, plus the rest of the cast (especially the police) adds charm as well. It's just the right film to watch when it rains outside and you don't want any thrilling rides or deep plots but want smile or even laugh sometimes and just have a good time.

Well first I'll start with the movie. I've gotta say this isn't may favorite Almodóvar, but that does not mean this is a bad movie. Quite the opposite, it's really fun. While it doesn't have the depth of Todo sobre mi madre or the outrageous comedy of Mujeres al borde..., this is a stylish little movie that is hard to classify. There are great performances from the leads, especially the Almodóvar stars Marisa Paredes and Victoria Abril. The master has touched upon some of his usual themes as well as themes from other films such as Autumn Sonata. While it may not rank among the best Almodóvar, it certainly is a fun movie. He made this one during a period of transition (along with ¡Átame!, Kika and La flor de mi secreto)in which the movies fell somewhere in between comedy and drama. If you've enjoyed the earlier or later films, give this one a chance. As for the disc itself, it's not nearly as bad as one reviewer has mentioned. True, it's not high def. It may not even be in the correct aspect ratio (which it really should in 2012), but it's far from VHS quality. The film is presented in widescreen and looks far better than previous home video releases. This release from Lionsgate truly is a no-frills release, though. As mentioned on this page, the DVD is "On Demand" and is actually burned on a DVD-R. The case is blue with a simple summary on the back. The disc itself is just a plain grey DVR with a simple type on the front. $20.00 may seem a little steep for such a release, but this is the first time Tacones lejanos has been released on disc in Region 1. I snatched it up as soon as it was available. Despite any downfalls with the movie and/or release, I was very happy to finally have this on disc. Almodóvar fans, buy with confidence.

My mother was a Spaniard and a big Pedro Almodovar fan ... Now my sister and I watch his movies from time to time in remembrance of our mom. He has a unique cinematic style and in our opinion his movies are excellent and always entertaining. That said, he's not for everyone (to each his own). I do agree with reviewers who have commented about the movie not being a comedy - although High Heels has a couple of rather funny moments, it is unquestionably a drama.

I am very disappointed with this product, with Amazon and with Lionsgate. On the site, this product shows on top, under the name of the movie and by the Director's name Format: DVD instead of Format: DVD-R as it should be. In the Product's Details it doesn't show that is a DVD-R either. Just on the very bottom under Editorial Reviews a little line and another little DVD-R Note, both almost unnoticeable, that say that it is a DVD-R. I researched and like in the case of the movie "Amphetamine"; it shows on top, under the name of the movie and by the director's name Format: DVD-R What's this? Besides being a DVD-R, the quality is poor and it isn't a widescreen version. When I play it, it looks on the screen exactly the same like my VHS version of the movie plays, with a wide black frame around and the small picture on the center that is barely 75% of my TV screen. The screen format info isn't listed in the Product Details either. Besides all I mentioned above, the disc is also terribly scratched, as if it was a very used former rental. When I buy from independent sellers I always go reading the reviews before I buy. Buying from Amazon a "NEW" Lionsgate Studio product and being an Almodovar's movie, I couldn't imagine that something could go wrong. Trusting Amazon I just looked at the information on top and the Product Details. Now I feel very angry and disappointed with the purchase, I feel like I have been swindled. I paid $19.98 for a POOR quality and also scratched DVD-R when my VHS version plays the same or maybe better. Lionsgate Studio should definitely replace our product with a good quality one and remove from the market this POOR quality DVD-R. Also Amazon, if they really respect and care for their customers should immediately stop selling this DVD-R or at least update the product's details and give more and visible info and details to give buyers the choice if they want to pay a high price for such a poor quality product or not. Once you buy and open the product there isn't the way to contact Amazon and/or get a refund for your opened item. Amazon doesn't give you the option to File a Claim when you buy from them as they do when you buy from an independent seller. If you buy this product and open it you will be in the same stuation I am now. The Almodovar's movie is a very good movie as always but this DVD-R isn't worthy. If I could turn back time I wouldn't buy this product.

While Amazon touts this as a "high-spirited sex comedy," most viewers, especially Americans like myself, will struggle to see it as any of those. I suppose one could argue that because many of the film's characters have such an unusual melodramatic connection with one another that it has to be a dark comedy of some sort. It even has bizarre musical numbers to pad the flimsy plot. But ultimately, "High Heels" feels like a disjointed mashup of "Terms of Endearment" and "Murder She/He Wrote" with a sprinkling of "Mommie Dearest," "Chained Heat," and a Drag Queen cabaret for garnishment. In other words, it doesn't know what it wants to be any more than its characters. Although Director Pedro Almodóvar still manages to create a colorful, stylistic film with a little kink to it, its main plot twist is much too predictable. The film does have its pluses, however. For instance, Victoria Abril gives a terrific performance as the tormented daughter while Marisa Paredes, who plays the diva Mom, has the majority of funny lines. Because of those two, the film almost works. I give it two stars for their performances and the overall style of the film, including the opening credits and the film's use of jazz.

The film is very good one of almodovars best... The dvd visual and audio is professional quality it is in spanish language with yellow english sub titles... Other reviews have been bashing this rendition but i think they are mistaken the lions gate miramax version whixh is grey disc blue surface and red, black, blue art cover on the box is worthy purchase thier is NO QUALITY CONTROL issues i belive the problem is... When i purchased jamon jamon it was listed by Zima Films the Audio video was horrible and in reality not a worthy purchase but since then the Zima product has been pulled and another company is selling better copies... My review of zima copy is still listed so its very hard on the film i belive same has happened with High Heels ! Before you purchase ask if its the lions gate miramax copy as i described above if it is thier will be no problems with your purchase of new film. If its another company like Zima Films all bets are off let buyer be ware.

I would say CD or DVD quality. I am not an expert and can not exactly pinpoint the level of quality... but the important thing is that it just looks, (you can read the CC in English clearly) and it sounds JUST GREAT. True that the movie does not occupy the full dimension of the screen. It leaves a black margin all around the movie, and the movie at the center... still... did not make a difference to me. I am uploading about 1 minutes of the movie I hope I can publish it here, for your benefit. (the blue lines on the left have to do with my recording software)

Was looking forward to a funny movie - This is not it. It's interesting, and engaging, but if you're looking for a laugh, you should look elsewhere. It seems like Amazon just takes a wild guess at move genre and audio. First, Bliss is a Science Fiction movie (it's not) and now this is a comedy (it's not).
