Hideri Kanzaki is the last maid to be hired by the owner Café Stile, and fulfills the role of an idol maid in Blend S. Here's all you didn't know.
Hideri Kanzaki is the last maid to be hired by Dino, the owner Café Stile, and fulfills the role of an idol maid in Blend S . What is that, you ask? No one knows, but he does his job with passion and heart, so he was hired. Unlike the other waitresses, Hideri applied for the job and was not scouted as he genuinely wanted to fulfill the role.
As the last waitress to be hired, not much is known about him to anime-only watchers. Although you may know a bit, there is no harm in learning more. Here are ten facts you did not know about Hideri Kanzaki.
Hideri normally speaks in a bright and cheerful tone or politely. However, if he lets his guard down or is surprised, he speaks in a kansai accent.
A kansai accent is akin to a country accent, and this is how he usually spoke as he was raised on a farm. Although he can keep it at bay, he cannot help but talk this way when he is angered or emotional.
Hideri is not the "surprise" in the Blend S opening for nothing. Him being hired was not a trick per se, but the way he made them think he was a girl was a big trick.
He was planning on keeping this a secret, as he thought if they knew the truth, he was going to be fired. He also enjoys teasing the rest of the staff.
Hideri may act cute and speak cutely, but that does not mean he can always speak like a girl. To drive home the impression of a cute idol, Hideri ensures to talk in a higher tone to mask his masculine voice.
Since he is sixteen-years-old, he is still growing and may sometimes slip back into his regular voice. While the customers do not notice, the rest of the staff does.
Miu Amano plays the archetype of a "sadistic big sister" while Hideri has the role of an "idol" character. While their roles are both unique, they get along well. Since Miu is the leader of a doujinshi circle called Hanazono Folder, she needs inspiration for her works.
Hideri loves fashion and clothes, so him dressing up in different outfits gives Miu inspiration. They also have personalities that are similar, such as playing tricks on others.
The only reason why fans were expecting Hideri to make an appearance is because of his presence in the Blend S opening. After Miu was hired in the earlier episodes, there was no sight of Hideri until the last ones.
Him being hired was not a surprise, but the fact he was a boy, foreshadowing the "surprise" in the opening theme.
Throughout Blend S , Hideri is the only one who wears more than one casual outfit. You may see the other waitresses change into their casual outfit, but Hideri takes this up to eleven.
While shopping with Miu, Hideri decides to try on outfits and pick some out for her as well. He will only wear clothes he deems cute and tells the other characters that it is the most critical factor of an outfit.
Although you cannot reject where you come from, no matter where it is, Hideri comes from a family of farmers. Hideri's dreams are too big for his family, but he refuses to give up on becoming a top idol.
He lives out his dream by working as the idol archetype at Café Stile, but he sincerely hopes to one day be the most popular idol in the world.
While the entire staff agreed Hideri was cute and would be great to work at Café Stile, they were all stumped on what archetype to give him. Hideri was the one who came up with the "idol archetype" and convinced Dino that it would work.
However, after they discovered Hideri was a boy after he went into the girls' changing room, Dino was going to fire him until he pleaded with him as to why he should work for him.
Hideri comes from a long line of farmers and was raised on a big farm. However, this does not mean he wishes to continue the tradition of being a farmer. While he has the skills of an excellent farmer, it is not his dream.
He will do anything to not inherit his family's farm as that is his worst nightmare, which is one of the reasons why he was so desperate to be hired and work at Café Stile.
In one of the last episodes of Blend S , Hideri is hired. However, throughout the episode, the fact that Hidari is a boy is hidden by how the episode plays out. While when we first see him, he is in a cute outfit and acting girly.
He is hired for his appearance, and while the entire staff discovers she is a he when he goes into the girls' dressing room, he is not fired because of his pleas.

very serious post, if you shitpost i'll go kamiya on you
Crossdresser. Or to use Japanese terms (since this is a Japanese work..), a otokonoko.
Anyone who takes the "But he wrote girl in the resume" seriously doesn't realize he either was 1. purposefully trying to troll Dino or 2. thought Dino wouldn't hire him if he outright admitted he's male, or 3. both. As soon as Dino outs him as male, though, his reaction in the manga is "Yep! I'm a boy! ♥"- that line was cut in the anime due to time constraints but his playful "Aw, ya got me :P" expression was left in, which confirms he's perfectly fine with people knowing he's male. He's not offended at all, he's just "Yeah, that's right".
The toilet scene people like to cite is just a throwaway gag to set up the "crossdresser going into males' toilet" gag you see in anime sometimes.
A line in a manga chapter that wasn't covered in the anime suggests that it's a well known fact that he is male online, so it's safe to assume he outright admits it in his social media profiles. Further confirming the resume thing was just a lighthearted prank on his part.
I don't think I need to point out the obvious in that he calls himself boku (and even ore in a manga line!), though I'm sure someone is going to object to that as well.
It's actually a major point to his character that despite looking selfish at first he actually has a manly gentleman side to him he's not entirely aware of, which is outright pointed out by Miu, his likeliest love interest in the story.
It's not that transgender people don't exist in Japan, but a romantic comedy 4koma is definitely not the medium a Japanese writer is going to use to treat such delicate subjects.
Hideri identifies as a boy, so according to the sociological definition, he would be cisgendered, as he is an individual who has a match between the gender he was assigned at birth, his physical sex, and his personal identity.
Also, as per the sociological definition, Hideri seems to be better identified as a crossdresser, as he seems to simply be a cisgendered individual who wears culturally traditional clothing of the opposite gender.
Now, we don't know too much about Hideri's gender identity, apart from the fact that he says in his introductory episode that he's "a boy," and that he tends to have more feminine social mannerisms than the more traditionally identifying men in the show. But as with all labels, nothing is black and white, and there is plenty of gray area. Hideri might also be Genderqueer, and not feel part of the society norm of binary gender (male or female) and the stereotypes associated with each gender. (Think of genderqueer as “gender free”; free of all gender labels and gender stereotypes, including clothes, roles and any society gender conformity.) Notice that even though Hideri labels himself a boy, he naturally heads towards the women's restroom at the mall, but doesn't protest or hesitate to enter the men's room, even while wearing a dress.
Personally, in my analysis as a media studies professor, I would say that Hideri is likely Cisgendered/Genderqueer Crossdressing.
domo you put more thought in this than the writers probably wwwww
Jesus Christ this post is so pathetic.
Imagine looking so much into a fucking fanservice character that is supposed to confuse the viewer.
Oh, I'd definitely say trans. She tries to identify as a girl by putting down female on her job application, until Dino shuts her down. She heads for the women's restroom in the department store, until Miu stops her. So at least that's my headcanon on the whole thing.
But... He identified himself as a boy...
It depends on how you look at it really because as many media theorists will tell you the intention of the author and the blatant statements of a character don't necessarily tell you what is going on.
Society in Japan basically means that crossdresser and trans mean the same thing, so even if an author is purposefully trying to focus on one a bit of the other is going to be mixed in. In Wandering Son for example an anime where the character is so blatantly trans that the author got an award for LGBT representation and yet the mange and anime are often listed in gender bender and trap lists.
The job application, bathroom scene and certain vocal descriptors that they use are all very much verging on the "Trans" part of the split not the crossdresser part and yet there are some crossdresser parts.
Did the author mean for the character to be Trans? No I don't think so.
Is the character in the way they act and present themselves very archetypal of trans nature and experiences? Yes very much so.
Does the anime say that they are Trans in any overt way? No.
If this took place in the real world would they be trans? Yes a large portion of people like this end up turning out to be trans.
Would it be better morally if they were Trans or a crossdresser? Trans (mainly from a representation point of view)
Are they Trans? I like to think they are but that's up to you really.
