Hidden Assets Wiki TV
There's a Kin-shaped hole in our Sunday nights, but don't worry - a new drama series is kicking off this weekend. Set between a small town in Co Clare and the world's diamond capital, Antwerp, Hidden Assets is another brainchild of Kin creator Peter McKenna.
In the first six episodes, Angeline Ball's Detective Sergeant Emer Berry uncovers a drugs for diamonds criminal ring with ties to the Brannigans, a wealthy Irish family. She teams up with Belgian anti-terrorism cop Christian De Jong to solve the case.
Characters
Across a career spanning 30 years, Irish actor Angeline Ball has appeared in everything from Keeping Faith to Doc Martin. However, her latest outing as a detective is the most noteworthy among them all.
Hidden Assets is a series of six eps centered around the audacious task of investigating an international crime. DS Emer Berry (Angeline Ball) and her Belgian counterpart Christian de Jong (Wouter Hendrickx) are tasked with the daunting task of uncovering a massive criminal conspiracy. The show gets off to a slow start, but the payoffs are well worth the wait.
The best thing about Hidden Assets is the plethora of intriguing characters you get to interact with throughout. The cast is a veritable who's who of the crime scene - from the oh so sleazy to the very gental, and everything in between.
The big question remains - will the show be renewed for a second season? We don't have a firm answer yet, but we do know that the mystery is likely to persist for some time to come.
Episodes
Hidden Assets is a six-part crime thriller that details links between Belgium and Ireland. Filmed in Antwerp and Co Clare, it features a cast including Angeline Ball (Keeping Faith, Shameless), Simone Kirby (His Dark Materials), Peter Coonan (Peaky Blinders) and Wouter Hendrickx (Blackout).
The series follows detective Emer Berry (Angeline Ball) who uncovers a drugs for diamonds criminal ring with ties to the Brannigan family, a wealthy Irish family. She and Belgian anti-terrorism police officer Christian De Jong team up to unravel this conspiracy and prevent another bombing.
This is a complex and ambitious crime drama with a lot of influence from the Scandinavian noir that has been permeating crime thriller TV for the last decade. It explores the workings of two international police departments as well as socio-political themes beyond the central mystery.
It also takes inspiration from underappreciated gritty Irish drugs drama Love/Hate, with a brutal motorbike assassination a homage to that show’s style. In addition, it’s a highly intelligent piece of television that doesn’t spoonfeed the audience.
With a stellar cast, Hidden Assets is directed by Thaddeus O’Sullivan and Kadir Balci (Into The Storm, Silent Witness). It’s co-written by Peter McKenna, one half of the writing duo behind Kin.
Described as “family, power and the corrosive effects of boundless greed”, the show is set in Co Clare and Antwerp, home to the world’s diamond capital. It blends crime drama and political conspiracy with a hint of spy thriller, with a lead role for Angeline Ball, who reprised her supporting role from last year’s RTE series Acceptable Risk.
The series begins with an Irish heiress Bibi Melnick (Simone Kirby) revealing that her dead sister Sana, who worked for her ship-servicing company in Antwerp, was involved in a drugs-for-diamonds criminal ring and a series of deadly bombings. But the case takes a turn for the worse when Darren, a small-time drug dealer and friend of Bibi’s, is killed by masked assassins in a shootout with the police.
The show, which is produced by Saffron Moon and co-produced by leading Belgian producer Potemkino & Canada’s Facet 4, was filmed in Antwerp last summer. It will be aired on RTE One and RTE Player this autumn.
