Adelaide composer Dan Thorpe wrote and performed this piece of ‘composed theatre’ . Jason Tavener/BIFEM 2019 .
More than perhaps any other instrument, the grand piano symbolizes the classical music canon and its rigid traditions . Placing such an instrument centre-stage conjures particular expectations for audiences: expectations Dan Thorpe thoroughly demolishes in XXX Neon Sign .
XXX Neon Sign is based on an epic poem by James Andre about working in a Brisbane porno shop . A work of “ composed theatre ”, XXX Neon Sign uses musical strategies to organize all aspects of the performance: the performer and the work itself are inextricably linked . Coined by Matthias Rebstock and David Roesner, Roesner describes composed theatre as where “the performance often is the work […] its authorship often more complex, collaborative and emergent .”
It’s hard to imagine anyone other than Thorpe performing XXX Neon Sign . It relies on his idiosyncratic style of piano-playing and the way he embodies the protagonist in Andre’s poem .

This concept of embodiment permeates Thorpe’s music . His use of scrolling graphic scores in earlier works such as false cognate and Pressure and Light place the emphasis on physical gestures and the way performers use their bodies to create sound .
In these compositions written for other musicians, Thorpe allows his musicians’ bodily autonomy and a greater degree of freedom . While avant-garde art music composers have sought more and more control over the bodies of performers throughout the 20th century and beyond, those working in experimental paradigms like Thorpe cede such control .
Thorpe’s own physicality is explored in various ways in XXX Neon Sign . Thorpe intimately reaches into the body of the instrument, preparing the strings with a set of household keys; using an electromagnetic device, an “e-bow”, to warp the strings and create muted drones .
Angular, disjointed chordal figures, interspersed with the odd forearm cluster chord are prominent, with rhythmic complexity in both the spoken word and the piano lines .
Unlike the type of music one might associate with the products in the porno shop, there are many moments in XXX Neon Sign where the timbre becomes fragile and delicate – the e-bow’s drones create moments of profound stillness, while the use of keys on the piano strings creates some gorgeous microtonal harmonies .
Thorpe’s training as a classical pianist is most evident in his appropriation of waltz figures from the classical piano repertoire, played with a deliberate clumsiness, to accompany an anecdote about a “swaggering bogan” .
XXX Neon Sign explores ideas around Australian masculinity, heterosexuality, and class . A rather drab shop assistant’s uniform (design by Olivia Zanchetta) and Thorpe’s well-cultivated mullet effectively signifies the working-class aspect . We listen as Andre, a queer man, interacts with the porno shop’s customers, and we get an insight into the things men say when they believe they have a supportive audience .
While Andre’s descriptions of his interactions with customers contain plenty of dark humour, there is also poignancy and empathy woven throughout the text and in the nuances of Thorpe’s delivery .

Nudity – both live and in projection – might seem like an obvious artistic choice in the context of poetry about a porno shop, but here it is less about sex than about vulnerability . Videography of Thorpe’s body by Gilbert Kemp-Attrill is projected on the wall behind the piano . Thorpe’s movements range from sweeping balletic gestures to a subtle tensing of the jaw .
XXX Neon Sign is the first production for Rumpus Theatre – a new, independent theatre collective based in Bowden, just outside Adelaide’s city centre . This work is an excellent fit with the ethos of the collective: bold and innovative while portraying aspects of society rarely seen in mainstream artistic projects .
XXX Neon Sign is at Rumpus Theatre until September 21 .

After a 10-year battle, Internet watchdog Icann has finally given in to the creation of an Internet domain dedicated to pornography .
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which governs the website naming system, yesterday approved the creation of a top level ' .xxx' domain, opening the way for a red-light district online for pornographic websites .
Icann gave initial approval last year, but carried out further consultation checks over the application .

It is now poised to sign an agreement with the ICM Registry, which is backing the domain, allowing .xxx the same level status as .com and .org .
Religious groups argue that giving adult websites their own corner of the Internet legitimises the content .
But pornographers aren't happy either, and worry it will ghettoise their sites .
Although it's meant to be voluntary, they fear governments could try to mandate the domain's use, so that pornographic content is more easily blocked .
Diane Duke, executive director of the adult entertainment industry's Free Speech Coalition, said in a statement that ICANN has 'disregarded overwhelming outpouring of opposition from the adult entertainment industry - the supposed sponsorship community' and dismissed the 'interests of free speech on the Internet' .
Supporters have maintained that approving the domain is in keeping with the principle of openness that has fuelled the Internet's growth .
ICM Registry and its CEO, Stuart Lawley, who has led the fight for ICANN's approval, stand to profit handsomely from the rollout of triple .xxx websites because he will be in charge of collecting fees for the use of the new domains .
Lawley plans to charge registrars $60 per year for the domain names . He estimates that he could sell as many as 500,000 by the time he rolls them out this summer .
'This was always going to be a very lucrative arrangement,' he said in an interview yesterday .
Lawley's prices have been a critical issue for opponents to his plan, since domain names typically sell for a fraction of what he plans to charge .
ICANN had repeatedly rejected Lawley's application since 2000, under pressure from Christian groups and governments unhappy with the spread of online porn .
Lawley has pitched the suffix as a way for parents to more easily block access to the content . He argues it will be easier for Web filtering software to block .xxx sites since they are clearly labelled as porn .

Generation XXX: Teens Addicted to Porn?
Oct . 31, 2013— -- For a new generation of young people, pornography is just a click away, but some experts have been asking, is the average teenage brain ready for porn ?
In a study conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation, 70 percent of teenagers said they accidentally stumbled across porn online . Some experts say pornographic videos and images can color a teenager's ideas of what sex should be like even after they start experiencing it for themselves .
Gail Danes, the author of a book called "Pornland," said for the average young teenage male, his first formative impression of sex is porn he might find on the Internet .
"You average teen, when he clicks on 'porn' in Google, what does he think he is going to see, breasts maybe? In reality, he is catapulted into a world of sexual violence," Danes said . "He doesn't have a reservoir of experience . He has probably never had sex ."
Danes argues that pornography, which has never been easier to find and view, is "sexually traumatizing an entire generation of boys ."
"[Porn] is his introduction to sex, so I think he's assuming that this is all about arousal," she said . "[He is] being introduced into sex by 'gag me and then f**k me .'"
And it's not just boys . Winnifred Bonjean-Alpart, who appeared in the 2012 indie documentary "Sexy Baby," said she was only 12 years old when she admitted she had seen porn and understood all its innuendos .
"We're getting messages from everywhere that are saying if you dress this way, you are going to be either treated well or you are going to feel powerful," she said . "Sex is power ."
Bonjean-Alpart is part of a new order of teenagers brought up in an era where explicit images can be found just about anywhere .
"We're like the first generation to have what we have," she said . There is no one before us that can kind of guide us . I mean, we are the pioneers ."
Calum, a young man living in England with a long-time porn compulsion, spoke with English journalist Martin Daubney for the British Channel 4 report, "Porn on the Brain ." In the report, Calum told Daubney that sex with real women didn't compare to masturbating to porn .
"It's not as good because they're not as good as the porn, obviously," Calum said . "The porn girls have done it a lot more . They're more confident ."
For Calum, his porn addiction crept up on him .
"At first I didn't know the limits and the bounds of what was extreme," he says in "Porn on the Brain . "I would speak to my friends and find out how much they watched, and it just didn't compare . Like, every bit of spare time I had in the day was watching porn ."
Calum went on to tell Daubney that he can't find a way to stop . He gets a glimpse of Calum's hard-fought struggle when they drive past a pretty girl and it triggers an immediate reaction for Calum, who has to get out of the car and slip off to the bathroom .
But could Calum's Internet porn compulsion be the same as true clinical addiction? While the American Psychiatric Association has not yet classified pornography as a listed addiction, some professionals working in the field are treating it as such .
Dr . Valerie Voon, a neuro-psychiatrist and a global authority on addiction, is working at Cambridge University in England on this very topic . She found 20 young men ages 19 to 34 who said their lives were controlled by porn . Voon's study participants didn't want to be identified but were willing to have their brains scanned and analyzed to see if the pleasure centers in their brains would react to porn in similar ways that a drug addict or alcoholic's brain reacts to their substance of choice .
When Voon's data was analyzed, the results were astounding . Compared to the control group, the compulsive porn users' brains were twice as active in the pleasure center known as the stratum, mimicking the responses seen in brains of drugs and alcohol addicts .
"Compulsive pornography users do have parallels with substance abuse disorders," Voon concluded .
Of course, one study is not definitive and the Free Speech Coalition, a trade group for the porn industry, says that "unlike drugs and alcohol, adult content is not and cannot be a chemical addiction no more than compulsive shopping, gaming or hoarding ."
But for some of those who believe porn addiction is real and could even be harmful, a few have tried to produce porn that is more like actual sex .
Cindy Gallop, a former advertising executive turned entrepreneur, started a website called "Make Love Not Porn," a kind of YouTube video streaming channel online in which real-life couples post their homemade sex videos . Her goal was to give porn users a destination where they could see real love making instead of hard-core porn . "Make Love Not Porn" went public in January and already has more than 100,000 users .
"Children are viewing hard-core porn years and years before they ever have their first sexual experiences and it's shaping their view of what sex is," Gallop said . "That is why what we're doing is so important ."
Others, such as pornographic director and producer Jincey Lumpkin, are making porn videos that show what they say are softer, more relatable depictions of sex that are more realistic and less harmful to young people .
"Porn is a fantasy that can't ever stand in for sex education," Lumpkin said . "The way that it is put out there, often times you just feel like a woman is nothing but an object or a hole, and I try to offer an alternative to that ."
